Marvel ‘Big Three’ Update!

0

Marvel seems to be shaking down it’s core superheroes to give them new life, and giving some new character’s the center stage!

Steve Rogers has not been so good lately, coming out from an event which not only knocked the wind from him – but also the Super Soldier Serum that has been keeping him so young and fit for all these years. There have been rumors about who was going to take up the Shield in his place, but Marvel has recently been announced the heir to the title – Sam Wilson, better known as the Falcon.

Sam Wilson, the New Captain America

Remender very recently commented on what the past two years have been leading up to;

“Historically, Falcon would often act as air support, flying Steve into the battle. Why not merge the two? He pops the wings, and as he flies, he keeps the shield latched onto his back. He dives down onto the scene, hurls the shield, wings retract, and rolls into a kick or jump, catches the shield on the way back. He doesn’t have the super soldier serum, but he has the added zing-zang-zoom of flight.”

Wilson will not be facing the upcoming threats of HYDRA alone – Steve will act as support for the new Captain America from training to tactics…whilst we will also see the return of Ian, Steve’s adopted son from Dimension Z, who has taken up the mantle of Nomad.

Sam Wilson has previously used the Shield before whilst Steve Rogers was injured, but has not been the first black Captain America. That honour belongs to the character Isaiah Bradley, whose story was the centerpiece of the 2003 limited series Truth: Red, White & Black. Isaiah is also the grandfather of Elijah Bradley (Patriot of the first incarnation of the Young Avengers).

Another of Marvel’s ‘Big Three’ to see a change was Thor, who was recently announced to be passing down Mjolnir to someone more worthy. The exact details of this are unclear, but to quote series writer Jason Aaron;

"More like 'Phwoar!" He said, sexistly
Not She-Thor/Lady Thor/Thorita. Just Thor.

“This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before”

In order to further dispel any rumors that the God of Thunder would be undergoing a sex change (similar to his adopted brother Loki), Marvel have released a picture of ‘Unworthy Thor’, who wields his ax Jarnbjorn, a weapon he wielded in his youth before he had even picked up Mjolnir. Whilst the ax cannot control the storms or propel him though the air, it does happen to have the power to slay gods. Recently it was stolen by Kang and the Apocalypse Twins, and become a pivotal item in Remender’s Uncanny Avengers storyline. If you look closely, you can also see that his left arm is now a metallic substitute – supposedly the arm of the Destroyer, which replaces one he lost in a recent battle with the son of Apocalypse.

Thor, looking a bit rough around the edges

If you read Thor: God of Thunder, then you will also notice the similarities to the future God King Thor…complete with metal arm and ragged beard.

Finally, Marvel has announced that come 2015, we shall have a brand new group of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, labelled as Avengers NOW initiative…it features the brand new Captain America and female Thor alongside some rather interesting faces.

Avengers NowSo, to cap off the changes to Marvel’s ‘Big Three’, we have Iron Man, sporting a new suit of armour which will debut in November for Superior Iron Man! The traditional red and yellow (and more recent black and gold) have been switched out for a futuristic white/silver overlay, which gives this new suit a futuristic look. Fans may notice that the title switch seems oddly similar to the recent Superior Spider-Man, which saw Doctor Octopus take control of Peter Parker’s life, in and out of the Spidey suit…all that we’ve been told is that although it is not Otto in control here, the Superior Iron Man will be “a character that’s hard to root for”.

Superior Iron Man

Along with the new Thor, we also have another Asgardian…Angela, who has been revealed through Marvel’s Original Sin event to be Thor (and Loki’s) sister! This shouldn’t be the only awkward relationship to look forward to, as Bucky seems to be joining the team – and I suspect he’ll want to have words with Sam about the responsibilities of wielding the Shield of their mentor…

Another duo to keep your eye on would be the Queen of the Inhumans, Medusa, and Inferno – a recent addition to the Inhuman ranks (and Marvel Universe), who was introduced in the Inhuman comic series earlier this year. Marvel has promised that the Inhumans will recieve more page time in the future, and no doubt have plans for them…

Scarlet Witch, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange and Deathlok round off the team. Personally, of these four I am most interested in Deathlok – his recent appearance in Marvel’s Agents of Shield series, his ‘rebooted’ Original Sins origin and his upcoming comic series show that Marvel is trying to do something interesting with this character…

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Sequels can be tough – getting the right balance to improve on it’s predecessor, but not overdo it is almost an art form these days. Thankfully Matt Reeves knew exactly what he was doing when we was making Dawn of the Planet of the Apes… and the result is a sight to behold.

DOTPOTA_Header

Sitting in the trees in the rain, just biding their time… stalking their prey and waiting for that perfect moment to strike. Caesar gives the command to advance, and the 50 or so apes that are waiting around him take off, silently moving from tree to tree at high speed. As they swing from tree to tree it’s clear that several apes are carrying spears, and they’re communicating effectively to make sure their target is approached from the right angle.

This opening scene to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes sets the tempo for the whole film. It showcases exactly how far they’ve come since their escape from the Gensys lab, and their exodus over the Golden State bridge into the nearby woodlands. The apes work together effectively, and it’s clear from the off that they’re a well-oiled and impressive machine in their endeavours.

I went to see this movie on Tuesday, as part of Cineworld Cinemas’ “Secret Screening” programme. The long and short of it is that they put on a movie screening, but they don’t know what it’s going to be, and neither do you until the movie starts. So you get your ticket, and you wait for the surprise – often it’s a movie that hasn’t come out yet. The movie is always introduced by someone involved in the making of it… so when Andy Serkis popped up on screen to for a brief introduction, there was a riotous cheer from the crowd.

Apes have evolved to use weapons, and ride horses
Apes have evolved to use weapons, and ride horses

This new movie follows Rupert Wyatt‘s excellent Rise of the Planet of the Apes from 2011, which introduced us to intelligent super ape Caesar as he was brought up by scientist Will Rodman (played by James Franco). After being placed in a zoo, and promptly mistreated by Draco Malfoy… I mean, Tom Felton… Caesar gets very pissed off, and stages an uprising, escaping to the woodlands and decimating police forces that tried to stop them on the Golden Gate bridge in the process. The other result is that the drug that provides the apes with their heightened intelligence creates a disease which kills humans, and is particularly virulent.

Fast-forward 10 years, and Caesar and his ape family are happily living in the woodlands… whereas humans have been dying of what’s been dubbed “Simian Flu”, and of course apes are to blame (not the humans that created the virus in a lab in the first place). When the ape community encounters a small band of humans, the threat of war between the two groups will lead to a potential conflict that could prove which is the dominant species on Earth.

What’s clear from the offset in DOTPOTA is that we’ve reached a point technologically where Andy Serkis’ performance as Caesar is no different to that of any other actor in the movie, despite it being motion-captured. The level of detail in the ape character models, and the emotion that’s conveyed is mind-blowing, and as a result you really do connect with Caesar and his family on quite a deep emotional level. Serkis really has pushed himself to the limit, and he’s come out with an astounding performance that often plucks the heartstrings as a result.

Gary Oldman puts in a great performance (as always) as Dreyfus, the leader of the human group… though it felt like he didn’t get the screen time he deserved. Jason Clarke put in a decent performance as Malcom too, and the eerily Jay Baruchel-like Kodi Smit-McPhee did a good brooding turn as Malcom’s son. To be honest, all the actors did a really good job, and Fringe’s Kirk Acevedo put in a good turn as a massive douchecanoe too.

Despite the good performances from the human characters though, it’s clear that the performance capture team have outdone them, as the real stars of the movie are the apes. The humans seem to sit on the sidelines rather a lot, and most of the emphasis is put on the divisive conflict between Caesar and the wannabe leader Koba (Toby Kebbell).

The ape village is quite impressive to look at
The ape village is quite impressive to look at

Visually the film is amazing – the effects work is second-to-none, with no noticeably visible dodginess. All the apes are beautifully rendered, in particular the rather malevolent Koba who gets a lot of close-up snarling face shots. The ape village is impressive too, and in terms of set design it’s really interesting to look at and see how the apes move around the different levels.

The cinematography is great, and some of the camera angles used (particularly on the Golden Gate bridge, and in the city) are breathtaking. There’s some great action sequences and thankfully these aren’t viewed in a headache–inducing “Bourne Identitiy” style, despite the fast moving apes and Gorillas. The use of 3D isn’t huge throughout, so I would say that paying that bit extra to see it in 3D would be a bit of a waste as it doesn’t really enhance anything (despite my well documented hate of 3D movies in general).

The use of music in the movie is spot on too, assisting in accentuating the atmosphere and emotion in particular scenes. Michael Giacchino has done a good job with the this, but then after working on Fringe & Star Trek Into Darkness he was a great choice for it.

Serkis' performance definitely gets you emotionally involved.
Serkis’ performance definitely gets you emotionally involved.

In terms of what I didn’t like about the movie, there’s not much. In fact upon thinking about it for a couple of days, it’s definitely one of my top 5 movies of the year so far. The only thing I thought of was that the human aspect to the movie was overlooked in favour of the apes, and as a result Gary Oldman & Co didn’t get much of a look in. We didn’t get to see how the humans have had to cope with adversity much, or what the effects of the simian flu were (outside of the opening credits sequence).

Overall Reeves has built a solid sequel that develops the story at a great pace, and continues to keep the audience involved and emotionally invested in Caesar and his family. Often tense and thrilling, yet also tender and emotional, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes should definitely be on your watch list.

12 Monkeys TV Series Gets A Trailer

Now I don’t usually get too excited about TV series that are spawned from movies – take Nikita for example. I expected a Luc Besson-like tense action thriller of a series, and I was disappointed. However there’s one that’s piqued my interest, and that’s SyFy’s forthcoming 12 Monkeys.

12 Monkeys SyFy Series

Based on the massively underrated Terry Gilliam masterpiece from 1995, the new series stars X2‘s Pyro (Aaron Stanford) in Bruce Willis‘ former role as James Cole and Amanda Schull from Suits and funnily enough, Nikita.

If you’ve not seen Gilliam’s movie (which is a travesty and you need to correct this grave error NOW), it centers around a biological attack that decimated the human race, forcing it’s survivors to live underground. Believed to be the responsibility of The Army of the 12 Monkeys, and James Cole is sent back in time to try and avert the disaster.

When I initially heard about the series I was very skeptical, but after watching the trailer below I’m quite surprised at how much I’m looking forward to it! Take a look, and tell us what you think.

12 Monkeys has been picked up for a 13 episode run, and is due to air in January 2015

Official First Look at Ultron and Stills From Avengers: Age of Ultron

0

Geeks check it, the first look at robot gone bad, Ultron, for the Avengers: Age of Ultron. Excited? Of course you are. Anticipation is building and in a few short days that event on every geeks bucket list will begin, obviously I’m talking about San-Diego Comic Con. Marvel have a big presence at this event and for all you lucky attendees they are going to give you the privilege of seeing some footage from the Avengers 2. I’m so jealous, though I take comfort in the fact that I’m sure it will leak online in no time.

Anyway, to whet the appetite of those of us who can’t go, Entertainment Weekly bring you the first picture of the villain Ultron (James Spader), Iron Man and Captain America in an all new costume. We also have eight stills from the film, including some we’ve seen before, our favourite science bros and what looks like the team hanging at Avengers Tower. Enjoy and remember, we have year to wait until the film is released, this is just the first in what I suspect will be an onslaught of teasers and sneak peeks.

Christopher Walken cast as Captain Hook

NBC Casts Christopher Walken as Captain Hook
NBC Casts Christopher Walken as Captain Hook

After garnering 4 Emmy nominations for it’s Live Performance of the musical, ‘The Sound of Music‘, NBC are looking to go big once again this year. However, instead of singing in Salzburg this time they will be taking off to Neverland in their live musical extravaganza of the year with Oscar winner Christopher Walken cast as Captain Hook.

NBC Couldn't land Kristen Bell due to scheduling conflict
Kristen Bell: The voice of Princess Anna in Frozen

Sadly for NBC they could not get their first choice, Kristen Bell to play Peter Pan due to a scheduling conflict with her Showtime TV series House of Lies. Though musical fans should fear not as according to Bob Greenblatt (NBC Entertainment Chairman), ‘Whilst it’s tricky finding the right person in the schedule that we need it but we’re actually close.‘ He is also later quoted as stating Peter Pan will indeed be played by a woman.

This isn’t the first time that James M. Barrie‘s much loved book has become a televised musical. Universal Television produced a live stage broadcast of Peter Pan back in 1955 that starred Tony winners Mary Martin and Cyril Richard. The show drew in 65 million viewers – the highest rating for a single night program at the time.

Oscar Winner Christopher Walken

Christopher Walken himself is no slouch when it comes to Broadway and Musicals, for those who have only known him on the silver screen he actually has 13 Broadway credits to his name. This includes his Tony-nominated performance in James Joyce’s The Dead. In a recent interview he gave to Hollywood Reporter Walken stated. “I started my career in musicals and it’s wonderful after all this time, at this point in my career, to be in this classic musical I watched as a child and to work with Neil Meron and Craig Zadan again after Hairspray. It’s a chance to put on my tap shoes again.”

To say Walken is excited about this project might be an understatement but will viewers be as forthcoming with their praise of a live musical of Peter Pan as they were with the Sound of Music? I think that very much depends on who NBC manage to get for the lead role.

‘Gotham’ to add new possible Joker into each episode?

0
Jon Beavers 'Stand-Up' Comedian in Gotham
Jon Beavers ‘Stand-Up’ Comedian in Gotham

As many of you may know by now, Jon Beavers has been cast in FOX’s new TV series Gotham as a stand up comedian in the pilot episode of their much anticipated show. Ever since the announcement was made there has been the suggestion that this will be the actor who will become the future joker. Could anyone truly blame us? He’s a stand-up comedian currently with no name, there are similarities in the suit etc, it was a valid assumption.

bc4 copy

Yet over at BleedingCool a certain Rich Johnson has a rather different idea. What if the fans were thrown Jon Beavers as a ‘cry baby‘ or ‘red flag‘. What if in fact every single episode of Gotham comes out with a possible character who just might be the Joker?

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Basically, every episode in the first season will introduce a character that might be a future Joker, each emphasising aspects of the character’s iconography, a card sharp, a flower seller, a clown, or just a guy with a very big grin.

All relatively unknown actors. All potentially a Joker. But only one of them being the actual Clown Prince Of Crime.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Now I’m not the only one who thinks this is a great idea, just think about how Twitter and Social Media would erupt after every single episode. This would garner so much buzz about each upcoming episode that if it’s done well would keep the ratings ticking along nicely.

Then again, this could all be happenstance and coincidence, maybe the directors and the producers were being straight with the fans and maybe there are a few of us who have read too much into this. What I do know however is that I will be watching the debut episode of Gotham and keeping my eyes peeled for any hint of a Joker.

Big Hero 6 News!

0

Previously, Disney had been very quiet on it’s next feature, having only released a tv spot for it’s upcoming movie Big Hero 6…and not much else. The TV Spot highlights two of the cast, Hiro Hamada and his robot Baymax, as the former aid the latter in kitting up in an outfit worthy of a superhero…in a fashion which reminds me (in a good way) of Mr Incredible fitting back into his super suit in Disney’s previous original hero movie The Incredibles.

The voice actors for the project have only recently been revealed, with some familiar vocals – as well as character design.

Voiced by RYAN POTTER (“Supah Ninjas,” “Senior Project”), robotics prodigy HIRO HAMADA has the mind of a genius—and the heart of a 14-year-old: his state-of-the-art battle-bots dominate the underground bot fights held in the dark corners of San Fransokyo. Fortunately, big brother Tadashi redirects Hiro’s brilliance, inspiring him to put his brain to the test in a quest to gain admission to the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology. When a tragic event changes everything, Hiro turns to a robot named Baymax, and they form an unbreakable bond—and two-sixths of a band of high-tech heroes on a very important mission.

SCOTT ADSIT (“30 Rock,” “St. Vincent”) provides the voice of the world’s most compassionate robot. BAYMAX cares. That’s what he was designed to do. The plus-sized inflatable robot’s job title is technically Healthcare Companion: With a simple scan, Baymax can detect vital stats, and given a patient’s level of pain, can treat nearly any ailment. Conceived and built by Tadashi Hamada, Baymax just might revolutionize the healthcare industry. But to the inventor’s kid brother Hiro, the nurturing, guileless bot turns out to be more than what he was built for—he’s a hero, and quite possibly Hiro’s closest friend. And after some deft reprogramming that includes a rocket fist, super strength and rocket thrusters that allow him to fly, Baymax becomes one of the “Big Hero 6.”

JAMIE CHUNG (“Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,” “Once Upon A Time,” “The Hangover Part II & Part III”) steps up as the voice of the aptly named GO GO TOMAGO, who knows what it takes to be fast. She’s tough, athletic and loyal to the bone, but not much of a conversationalist. Popping bubble gum and delivering well-placed sarcasm are totally her speed. The daredevil adrenaline junkie is at her best on wheels, and when Go Go joins forces with “Big Hero 6,” she rolls like never before, using maglev discs as wheels, shields and throwing weapons.

DAMON WAYANS JR. (“Let’s Be Cops,” “Happy Endings”) provides the voice of WASABI, who’s committed to precision. He’s super smart and just a touch neurotic, but the big and burly neatnik can’t help but join the cause when Hiro needs him most. As part of “Big Hero 6,” Wasabi amplifies his martial arts skills with jaw-dropping plasma blade weaponry. Sharp doesn’t even begin to describe this guy.

GENESIS RODRIGUEZ (“Tusk” and “Run All Night”) was called on to help bring Honey Lemon to life. It’s elemental when it comes to chemistry whiz HONEY LEMON. Don’t let her glasses and funky fashion fool you: Honey may be as sweet as her namesake, but she has a fire in her belly and a can-do attitude that make her pretty much unstoppable. Her knowledge of alchemy proves powerful, too, when the effusive brainiac becomes part of the “Big Hero 6” and creates clever concoctions that when thrown, can get her team out of nearly any jam.

Voiced by T.J. MILLER (HBO’s “Silicon Valley,” “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” “How to Train Your Dragon 2”), fanboy FRED comes off like a laid-back dude with no direction. But this sign-twirling, monster-loving, comic-book aficionado is sure to go places—when he’s good and ready. For example, Fred doesn’t hesitate to join “Big Hero 6,” and he has a lot of ideas for his super-hero skillset, too. His ferocious, fire-breathing alter ego comes complete with claws, integrated communications and a super bounce. But his sign-spinning may still come in handy.

(Credit – Disney Animation Studios)

With all this information, Disney has also released a full-length trailer, which gives us a better idea of the project – set in San Fransokyo, with a mysterious villain in a Kabuki mask, and no one in the law taking them seriously. It gives a good idea of the humour, and the action, we can expect from this project.

Big Hero 6 hits theaters on November 7, 2014, directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams.

Thor To Be Gender-Swapped In October

1

Earlier today it was announced by Marvel execs that the Legendary Thor will step down from his position as Thunder God and be replaced by a female counterpart who will take his name.Series writer Jason Aaron, keen to dispel any rumours, stated online that:

“This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before”

"More like 'Phwoar!" He said, sexistly
“More like ‘Phwoar!” He said, sexistly

With only three previous characters wielding Thor’s hammer Mjolnir previously (four if you count Superman), Marvel are remaining incredibly tight-lipped about who the new Thor is, and the storyline surrounding her rise to Godhood:

“This October, Marvel Comics evolves once again in one of the most shocking and exciting changes ever to shake one of Marvel’s “big three” – Captain American, Iron Man and Thor – Marvel Comics will be introducing an all-new THOR, GOD OF THUNDER. No longer is the classic male hero able to hold the mighty hammer, Mjölnir, a brand new female hero will emerge will who will be worthy of the name THOR. Who is she? Where did she come from and what is her connection to Asgard and the Marvel Universe?”

This has seen the second massive shake up of Marvel’s “Big Three” , with Steve Rogers retiring later in the year. Whether this is part of an overarching plot we have yet to see. We can only wait to see if we will hear some about any major changes to Iron Man come Autumn, completing the triumvirate.

First Official Full Length Trailer For Doctor Who: Series 8 Lands

0

The return of Doctor Who for series 8, is super exciting because it brings with it a new face for our timelord, Peter Capaldi. Unfortunately, it has also been plagued by leaks; first the scripts appeared online and next the first episode, albeit in black and white, missing some of the CGI and persistently watermarked. As a true whovian, I have naturally avoided spoilers but this comes with disappoint; until now we had only been awarded for the long wait with a couple of little teasers and it just didn’t satisfy my longing.

Today I have a big smile on my face as I bring you the first official full length trailer. Featuring our new Doctor, old monsters, new monsters, a reptilian detective, the classic yet overdone Daleks, a freaking T-Rex and of course our (how much more can you do with this character?) Clara. Take a look and share your thoughts below or on the facebook post.
