AMC Orders Pilot for ‘The Walking Dead’ Companion Series

the_walking_dead_67137

AMC have officially ordered a pilot for The Walking Dead companion series, due to begin production in December. The story will be set in the same zombie, sorry, walker infested world and will focus on new characters in a different location, therefore not technically a spinoff.

Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert are all returning as executive producers with Sons of Ancharcy’s Dave Erickson named as showrunner. Kirkman and Erickson have turned in a pilot script which is said to have “really impressed” the executives over at AMC.

Up to this point we know very little about the show, with a title still to be announced. Kirkman did have this to say about the new endeavour “There are many corners of The Walking Dead universe that remain unseen in the shadows,” Kirkman said. “Being given the opportunity to shine a light into those corners and see what lurks out there is an absolute thrill. I know the fans are anxious to hear what Dave and I have been cooking up for this new universe of The Walking Dead, and I’m happy to be one step closer to sharing it with them.”

I have often wondered about what is happening in the rest of the world as Rick and his frequently changeable band of merry survivors make some really poor decisions in the attempt to survive. I’m particularly curious about whether there is any kind of authority still in tact, whether that be armed forces or some semblance government or whether there are people working towards a cure in a grubby caravan with a severe lack of equipment and an over abundance of walker samples. What would you like to see?

The Walking Dead returns to our screens with the series 5 premièring  on October 21.

Travelling the Old World with Gotrek and Felix

0

Gotrek-Felix-Curse-of-the-Everliving-394x389

Back through the mists of time I used to play Warhammer ( the fantasy tabletop game popularised by Games Workshop for those of you born last week),  this was back in the day before you had to be selling meth out of an RV to be able to afford it.

Army books were packed full of the details of a given race in the Warhammer game but would also feature mythology in the way of stories. Some of these stories were based on the adventures of an unlikely pair of characters that would go on to be arguably the most well known characters of the whole Warhammer setting they’re names were Gotrek Gurnisson and Felix Jaegar.

Gotrek is a dwarf Trollslayer and Felix is a human poet and adventurer. Gotrek had become a Trollslayer after performing some unmentioned shameful act in his past and was now seeking an honourable death against a worthy foe. Felix had become his partner after a fateful drinking binge that lead to him making a blood-oath with the Dwarf to record his adventures and his heroic death and if there’s one things dwarves take seriously it’s blood-oaths.

Some years later I had lost interest in the Warhammer game partly due to how cripplingly expensive it was but I’d always loved the world that the game was based in then I discovered that the Black Library published novels set in the various worldstrollslayer-classic that the games were based in. One of their earliest published book series were the Gotrek and Felix books- dedicated to the pair’s adventures in the Old World and it quickly became a flagship for their Warhammer output.

The books are an excellent example of accessible fantasy which slowly builds its own mythology. Making good use of the classic trope of the odd couple.  Many of the books are prefaced by a commentary by Felix as though they are taken from the books he has written of their travels together.

Gotrek Gurnisson is the best or worst slayer ever depending on your perspective and it’s a sort of running self-aware joke. The slayer is stubborn, sullen, prone to mood swings, and like most if not all dwarves is a big fan of ale and isn’t quick to trust other races.

Throughout his adventures Gotrek Gurnisson has fought with Orcs, Goblins, Skaven, Trolls, Chaos warlords and sorcerers, Vampire Counts, The Undead, Beastmen, Dark Elves and even a Bloodthirster of Khorne amongst others. Whilst Gotrek has the inherent toughness of all dwarves, his longevity is seemingly derived from his rune axe. Gotrek’s axe is ancient and possessed of potent rune magic, he found it in the possession of the dead son of King Thangrim Firebeard in an ill fated excursion to the Chaos Wastes. High Elf mage Teclis reading the aura of the slayer at one point noted that the power of the axe had changed the slayer from a mere hardy dwarf into something else explaining his longevity and resilience.

Felix in contrast to the taciturn slayer is often pragmatic and is a hopeless romantic at heart. Whilst he doesn’t share Gotrek’s sheer ferocity and fearlessness in battle he is an accomplished swordsman and has his own powerful weapon in the form of Karaghul, a sword imbued with magical properties that he found in Karag Eight Peaks. They first met during a riot in the city of Altdorf where the slayer saved the poet’s life from the Reiksguard prior to their drinking binge which resulted in the blood-oath. Imperial Wizard Max Schreiber comments that Felix’s prolonged exposure to the powerful rune magic of Gotrek’s axe amongst other things have also imbued him with vitality beyond that of a normal man.

ulrikabloodbornDespite his many fights the only lasting injury Gotrek has suffered is the loss of an eye whilst fighting a horde of Goblins with his eyepatch just adding to his already intimidating appearance.

The pair have travelled throughout the Old World but made a home of sorts in Nuln in a tavern named “The Blind Pig” run by a former soldier friend of Gotrek’s named Big Heinz. Gotrek acts as  bouncer with his intimidating appearance and notoriety being both a blessing and a curse for the landlord.

The books have also featured several memorable supporting characters like the genius but also quite mad Dwarf engineer and inventor Malakai Makaisson, Snorri Nosebiter a courageous but dimwitted slayer and old friend of Gotrek’s with a habit of referring to himself in the third person, Max Schrieber a powerful Imperial Wizard and scholar and also a love rival of Felix, Ulrika Magdova a former Kislevite noble now vampire who was formerly Felix’s lover and Greyseer Thanquol a powerful Skaven sorcerer who is one of the few enemies to face the pair and survive.

Grey Seer Thanquol and Ulrika Magdova had their own trilogies spun out from their appearances in Gotrek and Felix with the former being set in the scheming world of the Skaven and the latter telling the tale of Ulrika’s struggle with her new life as a Vampire being determined not to become an evil fiend despite her affliction, the award winning Ulrika The Vampire trilogy is written by Nathan Long with Thanquol’s being written by C.L Werner.

The first seven Gotrek and Felix books were written by William King with Nathan Long taking over with book number eight and writing five further books in the series. After Long’s last book new entries in the series became more infrequent with different writers, Josh Reynolds and David Guymer and are also unrelated to the previous books reading as stand alone tales.

Now though it seems the Slayer may finally be about to face his doom with The Black Library publishing the first part of a new Gotrek Kinslayerand Felix story “Kinslayer – Book 1 of the doom of Gotrek Gurnisson” as part of the The End Times event which features several other books. The story from David Guymer takes place some time after Long’s last book rather being a stand alone affair.

The pair have parted ways for some time with Felix now married but craving the adventure of his younger years. Felix heads out on what may be his final adventure. As the forces of Chaos engulf Kislev he is reunited with old friends Gotrek, Ulrika, Snorri and Max as they fight the forces of the Troll King but a secret from the past splinters the group of friends.

Guymer will have a hard task crafting a story which is a satisfying conclusion to one of the most endearing book series in Fantasy with a mythology that has spanned sixteen books as well as various ebooks and anthologies. One of the most wryly comical elements of this mythology is Gotrek faced and defeated a Bloodthirster of Khorne, widely recognised as one of the toughest and deadliest creatures in the Warhammer world, way back in book number 3 so exactly what could defeat the slayer has been a subject of discussion ever since amongst fans .

Kinslayer – Book 1 of the doom of Gotrek Gurnisson is set to be published by The Black Library 5th September.

Joseph Schmalke’s The Infernal Pact – Sex, Drugs and Damnation.

INFERNAL

The Infernal Pact is a sex, drugs and black comedy-infused indie grindhouse horror comic mini series created, written and illustrated by Joseph Schmalke.

Three meth addled friends make some really bad choices whilst trying to score their next high and sell their souls to a dealer with a twisted sense of humour. The friends soon start losing time, waking up in strange places and witnessing horrifying events. At first they shrug things off; waking up in a strange place is not exactly new for any of them. Then they realise to their horror that maybe they have given away their souls and are determined to reclaim what has been taken from them. Such things are easier said than done though as the friends find themselves up against a satanic biker gang, hordes of the living dead and a nefarious demon with his own agenda.

One of the best things about crowd funding is it gives talented indie comics creators a chance to reach a whole new audience and Joseph Schmalke is one of those guys. The writer and artist previously crowdfunded the graphic novel The Calamitous Black Devils about a multi-national special ops squad tasked to stop an occult plan by The Third Reich to utilise a dimensional gateway to win World War II .

Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray the rest of the Paperfilms crew are back with a Kickstarter for a second volume of their adult oriented anthology Sex & Violence.

Inspired by Palmiotti’s love for classic European adult oriented anthology comic Heavy Metal, Sex and Violence Volume 2 is an adult oriented anthology graphic novel written by Palmiotti and his long time writing partner Justin Gray. Art in the book will be provided by Romina Moranelli, Rafa Garres , Vanesa R. Del Rey and Paul Mounts.

The three stories in the book are “Daddy Issues” about a seductive mother and daughter, “Red Dog Army” set during Hitler’s invasion of Russia it’s the story of veteran dog trainer Yuri Schlonsky who was recruited into the army against his will and sniper Valeriya Petroff, and “Filter” about a killer named Nico looking back on his life as a young man growing up in the streets of Brooklyn.

Palmiotti and Paperfilms have already done several successful Kickstarter campaigns for graphic novels. taking advantage of the freedom of not being tied down to a publisher to create adult oriented books.

Sex and Violence 2 has already hit its target with over 20 days to go and anyone who hasn’t got the first book but likes the sound of it can get a new edition as part of a package deal through this campaign, with new editions featuring cover art by Dave Johnson and  Amanda Conner available.

Dragondaze Charity Gaming Convention

This September sees the start of something a bit special in the board and card gaming community. Dragondaze is a new, one day Games Convention based in the Southern Wales town of Newport. The brain child of Simon Powell, Ann Macey and Steve Round, Dragondaze will be in aid of their chosen charity, Barnardo’s, and specifically for Barnardo’s Young Carers program.

The event itself promises to be a great one, with a gamut of traders from all aspects of the table top hobby, a raffle with prizes donated by Hasbro, gaming zones to try out old favourites and hot new titles, and even some cosplay from Jack Sparrow through to the Colonial marines of the Aliens universe.

It’s rare to be lucky to see the start of something with the potential that this convention has, and Geek Pride UK was fortunate enough to have first hand information from organiser Simon Powell, who kindly took time out of his busy schedule to give GPUK his personal insights into the reasons, challenges and meaning of Dragondaze to him.

GPUK: What was your inspiration for organising Dragondaze?

SP: My first experience with gaming was at a small convention in a church hall in Newport called Dragondaze, the last one was held in 1991, we (The Committee, Ann Macey, Steve Round, Simon Powell) wanted to bring this experience back to Newport but on a bigger scale.

GPUK: Your chosen charity is Barnado’s, is there a reason for choosing this charity?

SP: I’m disabled and Barnardos helped my family when we really needed it, it’s nice to give something back.

GPUK: What were the challenges you faced organising this event? Anything you didn’t expect?

SP: I don’t think there were any challenges as such, we have been helped along the way by Newport Council and many people have volunteered to help with the day as its all for charity, we had hoped to find a sponsor within one of the companies in Newport to help with some of the costs, but all our emails were ignored.  I don’t think I would have liked to have set something like this up before the event of social media, that has made contacting people so much easier.

GPUK: Are there any elements of the convention you are particluarly looking forward to or you’re proud of?

SP: I’m looking forward to seeing the looks on the faces of the young people from Barnardo’s who we have invited to the event. We also have a few surprise celebrities coming to the event. We are very proud of the amount of people who have volunteered to run games for people to play at the event.

GPUK: What are your future plans for more conventions and/or charity events?

SP: If this year is a success we intend to hold Dragondaze as an annual event, we may help a different charity each year, that hasn’t been decided yet, we have done as much as we can to make the day as enjoyable as possible for everyone who attends, whether there is a next year or not depends on people supporting the event and turning up.

So what are you guys waiting for?! Dragondaze promises to have something for everyone, from the casual card-flipper to the hardcore gamer, and all in aid of a fantastic charity. So if you find yourself in Newport on 20th September, pop in and check it out. And if you happen to see me, don’t forget to say hi!

Mighty No. 9 Beta Footage

0

At PAX 2014, we are finally got to see some beta footage featuring gameplay for the eagerly awaited spiritual successor of Mega Man. Given this is beta footage, we can only assume that the final product is going to look fantastic. Don’t believe me? See for yourself!

For those who don’t know, Mighty No. 9 is the Kickstarter project from Comcept, an independent Japanese game design and development studio formed in 2010 by industry veteran Keiji Inafune. Inafune is best known as the illustrator and co-designer of the Mega Man character.

From the footage, we can see just how similar to the original Mega Man games this project is turning out to be. The character walks the length of the stage, firing his arm cannon and merging with defeated enemies (for points and combos – an interesting way to ensure replayablity to get higher scores and beat friends). And the soundtrack…my god…you can tell that the composers worked on the scores of previous Mega Man games.

Having reached $3,845,170 from an original $900,000 goal, the project shows that the world still has a place for the old classics, even if it is given a modern upgrade graphics-wise.
