Hot on the heels of Part 1, Bad Lip Reading are back with Part 2, which is awesome because I assumed we would be waiting longer and quite frankly, I can’t get enough of their stuff. Though we don’t get another Carl Poppa rap, I glad delighted to assure you it is just as funny. Sit back and get ready to laugh your ass off.
WotC Announce the Magic: The Gathering Strategy Board game
Well, the title is half right. Wizards of the Coast have in fact only announced they will be announcing a Strategy Board game based on their biggest license, Magic: the Gathering.
Details are extremely frugal; all we know is the announcement willl be made at Essen Spiel, the biggest hobby gaming event in Europe, and the release of a single image showing an iPad next to a figure of the Planeswalker Chandra.
Suffice it to say this is pretty exciting, as WotC have big pockets and a huge creative staff. Hopefully this will translate to cracking game based on the one of the world’s biggest CCGs; once we have more details, we’ll let you know!
First Trailer for Bendis and Oeming’s Powers is Here
The adaptation of Powers, the critically acclaimed comic from Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming which follows former superhero turned homicide detective Christian Walker and his partner Deena Pilgrim of the Powers Division dealing with murders committed by those with superpowers, has just got its first trailer straight via NYCC.
The series which is set to appear on Playstation’s streaming network stars District 9, Elysium star Sharlto Copley as Walker and Susan Heyward as his partner Deena Pilgrim. The casting of Michelle Forbes as Retro Girl indicates the series will be based on the first arc of the Bendis/ Oeming comic which features Walker and Pilgrim investigating the death of well known and thought invulnerable superhero Retro Girl.
The trailer narrated by Copley’s Walker sets the tone for the adult oriented police procedural as Pilgrim is assigned to Walker and a handful of characters are quickly introduced, it also manages to pack an impressive number of f bombs into its scant 90 seconds.
Dracula Untold…
…also known as “that one Dracula story that really should’ve remained untold”. At least in my book and probably that of the many people that were at the movie theatre last night and left torn between being amused by it or being angry at having paid to see it. Now, the reasons I’m pissed at the movie might have less to do with the fact that they’ve borrowed the epic aerial shots that made Lord of the Rings awesome or that Dracula was basically Magneto, except with bats, and more to do with the fact that it actually promised something that it didn’t deliver on.
If you name your movie Dracula Untold, I genuinely expect you to tell me something I didn’t know about Vlad Tepes, not for a nearly two hour experience in the worst butchering of history ever. Sure, it never promised to be accurate, but hell…a little bit of homework would’ve gone a long way. I would’ve actually glossed over the absurdity of half of the movie, if they would’ve been among the few that actually placed the man in the right country. You know…that country that wasn’t Transylvania and that he actually ruled over before he was eventually killed? (It’s called Wallachia, look it up).
But say I let that go, why the attempt at making Vlad seem like this benign, puppy like man that tried to rule his country by being all lovely to his people? Sure, it looked like his fictional castle (I’m being literal here) was only populated by about 50 people, but really? If we can have an entire show about a guy eating his friends, co-workers and enemies – I’m looking at you, Hannibal – why do we have to pretend that a slightly/very unhinged (yet heroic to his people) man was something else? It’s because Luke Evans is pretty, I’m sure. And I’m not even trying to be funny here.
Can you imagine a movie that was actually historically accurate, a movie in which he impaled people left right and centre (properly so) and he didn’t spend time fawning over his made-up wife or his absurdly named child? (That movie exists by the way) Well, it might have been better in my eyes to be frank, but if that were the case and his redeemable characteristics would’ve only been understood by those with a slight knowledge of history, then it would’ve been a flop. Wait…it already is, so what was the problem then? It’s formulaic, it’s got a pretty guy, a pretty (albeit dumb) woman, a kid thrown into the mix, basically when it started it was a recipe for success. Are you telling me the audience has finally smartened up and stopped falling for that?! I am uncertain if I should thank the gods or cringe in fear at the number of movies that will follow Dracula’s lead down to the dark caves on top of made up mountains.
Back to one other thing that bugged the hell out of me and made me make funny faces throughout the film… Whoever wrote the script really should’ve considered not translating Angel to Romanian and slap it on as the kid’s label. Seriously, I don’t think anyone considered that no one, no one would ever name their kid Îngeraș or that it is one impossible word to say for someone who’s a native English speaker. But hey, it got the room roaring with laughter, so…point to the guys behind it? Ingrass…Ingrash… Yeah, they really should’ve quit while their were ahead. Maybe named him Johnny, since he was made up anyway.

I was told by someone yesterday that the British and American audiences wouldn’t actually care about the finer details of Tepes’s history, since well, they are clueless or uninterested in it. I suppose it’s what actually is at the root of my disappointment with the movie. If you start telling the untold story of a man, you should. I didn’t expect an epic, three part tale of his history with the sultan or his squabbles with his equally, if not more, damaged brothers, the treason that ultimately led to his imprisonment and so on (but it would’ve been nice), however I did expect more than what I got. Thank god for budget constraints or we would’ve all had to contend to even more CGI meant to cover up the lack of soul this movie was so desperately suffering from. I wonder if the budget constraints were responsible for them not being in the possession of a map that would’ve told them that from the south of Transilvania to Cozia you have to travel over 350 km, you know an impossible distance to cover back in the 15th century in less than a day(particularly a day that lasted about two or three hours, since time was more than fluid in this film), with horses or without them, because the horses magically disappear when it’s convenient, since it makes hacking people in half easier if they’re closer to the ground.
Luke Evans isn’t bad, but the fact that he actually looks like he can act is rendered moot by the fact that everyone around him either overacts or simply looks like they only came for the paycheck. I really hope they paid Charles Dance a lot of money, to be honest, since this was a definite step down from Game of Thrones. Sarah Gadon…well, I can say she tried, but she had very little to work with, alternating between actually sounding like she could stand at the side of a, at least historically, crazy man and sounding like a whinny child that belonged anywhere but there. Much like her on-screen child, Art Parkinson aka “Impossible to pronounce name, so why did we even bother?”
I really wish they would’ve made up a character, with an entirely different name, in an entirely made-up country, with made-up enemies and so on and I would’ve maybe enjoyed it. I compared this with The Hobbit to our very own Andy, last night, because let’s face it, that’s about as loosely based on the book as this is based on history. I have a feeling people in Turkey won’t appreciate the portrayal of Mehmet II anymore than I appreciated Vlad’s portrayal. Really, an entirely different, completely fictional, no known names mentioned might have been a little more enjoyable to me and to many, I’m sure.
Here’s the trailer, in case you still want to go and watch it, if only for the CGI, which is actually pretty good. But you know, you could just wait until it’s out on Netflix or DVD and save you the money on tickets, popcorn and whatever else. Hell, it might even ruin friendships if you’re the one suggesting this for your next outing.
Guardians of the Galaxy Animated Series Coming 2015
Currently the highest grossing film this year and the top earning franchise starter for Disney/Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy has become the hit film nobody knew they wanted and propelled relatively obscure characters into the lime light. WE ARE GROOT. To ensure the love for this unlikely band of heroes continues, during NYCC, Marvel have announced a Guardians of the Galaxy Animated series is coming to Disney XD in 2015. They even gave us a taste of what’s to come with this test footage:
Marvel have issued a full press release with the details of the production and describes the show as follows:
Produced by Marvel Television, the series stars Peter Quill as Star-Lord, the brash adventurer who, to save the universe from its greatest threats, joins forces with a quartet of disparate misfits — fan-favorite Rocket Raccoon, a tree-like humanoid named Groot, the enigmatic, expert fighter Gamora and the rough edged warrior Drax the Destroyer.
Marvel have even whet our appetite a touch more with this awesome artwork via EW

Although it has not been confirmed as to whether the movies stars will voice the characters, in an interview with NY Times Stephen Wacker – Marvel’s vice president for current animation – reassured fans that they will endeavour to retain the films off beat sense of humour and confirmed the shows plot will continue on from the movie, including appearances from that purpled skinned villain Thanos.
In Space We Brawl Prepares for Take-Off
Sony have been embracing the independant game developers more and more lately, and I’m loving the results. The latest developer to be taken under their wing is Forge Reply, and as a result their new title In Space We Brawl is a Playstation exclusive.

Dropping it’s landing gear on both Playstation 3 & 4 in October (14th in the US, 15th here in the UK), In Space We Brawl is a multiplayer blast ’em up featuring 11 different spaceships with 11 different weapons, battling it out for intergalactic supremacy. Chaos and carnage is the plan, and judging by the screenshots it won’t disappoint.
“We’ve been hard at work getting In Space We Brawl ready for launch,” said Alessandro Mazzega, head of PR and Marketing for Forge Reply. “Today we’re proud to announce the launch date and can’t wait for players to get their hands on the game. We’re trying to bring back the competitive local couch multiplayer and feel In Space We Brawl is the game to do just that.”

The game brings back multiplayer gaming to your living room, with local multiplayer using the game mechanics of a frantic-paced space shooter. There are over 100 different ship and weapon combinations, so every play style is catered for… and there’s 8 different locations for the madness to take place in. Each different location has it’s own set of environmental hazards, ranging from black holes, alien nests and solar winds. Each of these obstacles can be used by the players to tip the scales to his or her advantage.
Debuting as a PSN title for the PS3 and PS4, the game will be priced at £9.49 / €11.99 / $11.99. In the first week of release, Playstation Plus subscribers will be able to get an extra 20% off the title. We’re hoping to have a review for your reading pleasure shortly after release.
90’s Cult hit Twin Peaks set to Return in 2016 via Showcase
One of the most surprising developments in TV for years is the announcement that Twin Peaks, the cult hit which originally aired in 1990-91, is returning on Showcase for a new series coming in 2016.
The original series revolved around FBI agent Dale Cooper (played by Kyle MacLachlan) investigating the murder of home coming queen Laura Palmer (played by Sheryl Lee) in the small Washington town which gives the series its title. The murder sets of a chain of events within the idosyncratic town as Cooper tries to track down Laura’s murderer .
Twin Peaks was notable for numerous reasons; one being it was co-created by David Lynch (along with Mark Frost). Lynch has become infamous for his surrealist films like Eraserhead and Lost Highway. The series shares Lynch’s surrealist touch featuring numerous memorable characters Margaret Lanterman, better known as Log Lady due to cradling a log like a child wherever she went, being just one example.
The new series which will be written by Lynch and Frost will be set in the present day and continue storylines established in the second season with Lynch himself planning on directing the 9 episodes. On the show returning after over 20 years Frost said,
“For those followers of the show who felt bereft when the show ended where it did all those years ago are going to like where it goes from here, and we hope that a lot of people who haven’t been to Twin Peaks yet are going to be equally interested in where the story goes from where we left off.”
Lynch tweeted this announcement to fans.
Can My Heart Take This Adventure Time Trailer? Probably Not.
There’s not a lot that already hasn’t been said about my deep and passionate love for Adventure Time (See our Top article for more information).
Well, this happened, and I had to hold back the tears at the old GP offices, cos’ this trailer from Gritty Reboots took my feels out for a nice seafood dinner and then never called them again.
Ouch.
Bad Lip Reading do it Again With More Walking (and Talking) Dead – La Jiggy Jar Jar Doo!
Geek Pride are big fans of the videos produced by Bad Lip Reading, our attention original drawn to them by their first take on the hit show The Walking Dead and then Game of Thrones and…well you should just check them out and be prepared to laugh your pants off. Their newest video is another Walking (and Talking) Dead this time based on series four of Rick Grimes and the ever changing cast fail at basic zombie survival.
Carl Grimes becomes, if you can believe it, a little more creepy then pulls it out of the bag with seriously catchy rap BUT the question I’m asking myself is what does Beth have against that damn turtle? La jiggy jar jar doo!
