Nostradamus, Tolkien and the End of Days

Both Michel de Nostredame (Nostradamus), famous 16th century prognosticator, and J.R.R. Tolkien, famous creator of Middle Earth, have predicted the End of Days, Nostradamus fully aware of what he was doing, and Tolkien, purely inadvertently.

Nostradamus

John-Ronald-Reuel-Tolkien-10

Nostradamus, in one of his quatrains, predicted that World War III, fought with weapons of unimaginable power, and which will end the world as we know it, would originate in the Middle East, “out of the country of Greater Arabia (Saudi Arabia).” Of course, most of us accede that the current struggles in the Middle East are being watched closely, as well as being meddled with, by those of our countries who are dependent on their fossil fuels, as our fear of losing access to these stores would be catastrophic to the way of life to which we have become accustomed.

J.R.R. Tolkien, although he was speaking as an environmentalist mourning the loss of a simpler and more rustic way of life, stated that “the worst invention ever to be inflicted upon the Earth was the internal combustion engine.” At the time, he was complaining about the noise of motorcars, “aeroplanes”, and other noisy machinery, but if one looks at his statement just a little more closely, one can see that indeed he was correct in his assertion that the internal combustion engine was a disaster, “the greatest evil visited on modern man.”
An internal combustion engine, of course, runs on fossil fuels. The search for, and the plundering of, these fuel fields have damaged the Earth beyond repair, and show no signs of letting up. But additionally, and more importantly, the use of these fossil fuels have led to global warming (or “climate change” for those who wish political correctness). It has been proven that vast amounts of the world’s ice is melting, contributing directly to the changes in ocean temperatures that are having deleterious effects on most, if not all, species, both aquatic and land-based, that currently inhabit the Earth.

For instance, scientists have, for several years now, been watching in alarm a trend of cooler water flowing in the Atlantic. Many postulate that the source is mainly the depletion of the Greenland ice fields, but one must also look at other sources, such as a slowing of the Gulf Stream, which has traditionally warmed both the Atlantic coasts of the United States and Great Britain, moderating temperatures and storm cycles. The infusion of this colder water has changed the flow of the Gulf Stream, which can possibly account, in part, for the massive storms and unusually cold weather experienced on both sides of the Atlantic for the past decade or so.
Discussion of how this trend is impacting life on Earth, as well as the applied science that we can use to slow this (and other trends) must be left for a later time.

But I believe that both Nostradamus and Tolkien had the right of it – the destruction of the Earth, and life as we know it, is a process that has already started, and the ultimate source of this is man’s insatiable desire for fossil fuels. Technology exists, and is still being developed, that lessens our dependence on these fuels, but will it be enough to save the environment, albeit an already changed one? Or will we indeed exterminate ourselves, and everything else we hold dear, fighting for possession of the very tool of our destruction?

Announcements – Fallout 4 and XCOM 2

Last week, 2K teased us with the word ‘Advent’, and an advertisement for a seemingly utopian society. As details were released, it became apparent that  a supposedly near-future government called the Advent Administration offered a better life for citizens through genetic enhancement. Meanwhile, hackers text and images are hacked and replaced, revealing that Advent isn’t as omnibenevolent as it seems.

Now, a week later, and suddenly we’re hit with…a trailer. And not just any trailer – what we have is the world premier of XCOM 2, sequel to 2K’s critically acclaimed XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Welcome back, Commander.

The trailer hits us with a few bombshells – XCOM is no longer the planetary defense force for the entire of earth, defending it from invasion. Instead, the aliens are already here, and have a foothold within our society. Effectively, what happened was that the XCOM of the first game failed, and the world leaders surrendered to the alien forces. Now, you control the remnants of XCOM, as you must fight for humanity’s freedom as the Advent Administration seeks to completely subjugate humanity.

Meet the new and evolved Sectoids…ugly as sin, and just as deadly

The trailer effectively introduces new enemy and character types – Evolved Sectoids, new serpentine Vipers and ADVENT soldiers (what I assume to be genetically augmented humans) are among your gallery of foes, and new soldier classes seem to range from Grenadiers (packing a grenade launcher) to some kind of techy-techy people (sporting drones to provide assistance). One of the things to note about your units is there is also new melee weaponry, specifically a sword – this was something which caught my eye in the previous game. Primarily, the enemy are engaged through ranged combat, and it wasn’t until Enemy Within that with the use of MEC suits that your characters could engage aliens in close combat. Now it appears you can gear your soldiers up with weaponry which allows even the most unprepared soldier to do some damage up close and personal.

Whilst not shown in the trailer, these pictures give us an idea of how the final product will look like…and it looks fantastic.

You also catch a glimpse of your new base, a converted alien supply craft which is more mobile than the HQ you were situated in in the previous game – which is a logical step, considering how you want to be one-step ahead of a world conquering organisation.

Additionally, it appears that this is a PC exclusive, so until further announcements it seems that this will  be one to look out for on Steam…and with a November release date, it’ll arrive just in time for the Steam Winter Sales too. I think I just heard my wallet sigh in relief.

Now, we could end it there…or we could more onto the other announcement, which arrived mere moments ago. War…war never changes.

And Fallout never looked so good.

So, what can we take away from this? Well, the first minute and a half spends time dipping in and out of a town, switching from pre-to-post-Fallout. We are introduced to Vault 111, a new Vault which you can bet your ass will be the starting place for your character. We see that ‘blinking to the sunlight’ trip, similar to the Fallout 3, and are given a few shots of some new locations, from what looks to be the outskirts of a city(looks like a museum area too) to a beached ship (with thrusters…can’t wait to meet the folks who thought THAT was a good idea), a city street illuminated by a street lamp (although my attention was on the guy walking beneath that light…looks a lot like the Mysterious Stranger) to several shots of various locations to be found in this vast open world. We also catch a glimpse of some of the people you will encounter; the magnificent monstrosity known as the Deathclaw, new ghouls, a rusty old Protectron, an Eyebot, Brotherhood of Steel soldiers and more creatures which crawl the wastes.

One of the final scenes of the trailer appears to be a workshop, sporting a defunct Nuka Cola dispenser, laden with various weaponry, and even a Power Armour suit…could this mean that our Wanderer will get his own home to call his own? Given how Bethesda allowed the character in Skyrim to find a place to call his own, it might not be so far fetched…would make a change from lugging around a suit of Power Armour all around the place. It also seems that you will, somewhere along the line, find a trusty companion in the dog which has been present throughout the entire trailer…wonder if he shares a similar name to the other canine companions who have joined Fallout players over the years…

A little digging later, and I found out that previous theories about the game being set in Boston rang some truths – in the trailer, we see the Capital building of Boston with it’s unique “Golden Dome”.

No release date yet, but we can take a sneak peek at the box art – and it looks like its headed for the current-gen consoles and PC.

All in all, both of these games look amazing. Despite being lacking any gameplay elements, the XCOM 2 trailer sets up the scene perfectly for those who have played the series before and those who haven’t. You’re fighting for humanity at a time when all seems lost, and as this mysterious Advent  Administration seeks to tighten its hold on humanity. Fallout 4 focuses on showing the world of Fallout using in-game graphics to give us a taste of how the world of Fallout will look on the Now-Gen consoles. Whilst it only hints at the massive story which lies ahead, it is enough to get me waiting with bated breath for the next batch of information…which, as it turns out, will be at E3 on Sunday, June 14th.

Gordon’s Alive! Brian Blessed announced for Sci Fi Weekender.

Brian Blessed will return to Wales for a third time at the Sci Fi Weekender. His previous appearance two years ago was one of the most entertaining Q&A to ever grace the stage at the Weekender – it had the audience laughing themselves off their chairs.

Brian Blessed of course needs no introduction. A larger than life actor, he has appeared in Flash Gordon and Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, amongst others. He was once described as “a 20 year old in a 78 year old’s body,” by Guildford Shakespeare Company director Caroline Devlin.

As well as his stellar career as an actor, Brian is also an adventurer, having attempted to climb Mount Everest three times, explored the jungles of Venezuela (during which he survived a plane crash) and sparred with the Dalai Lama.

The Sci-fi Weekender continues to deliver the ultimate geek party experience: a four-day festival for people who love science fiction and fantasy.

The Sci-Fi Weekender will take place 17th – 20th March 2016 at Hafan-y-Mor, Pwllheli, North Wales.

Tickets can be ordered in advance here: www.scifiweekender.com

Calling all table top gamers! UK Games EXPO is this weekend!

Hey folks, it’s that time again! This weekend will be the UK Games EXPO, the largest card, board and table top gaming event of the UK calendar. This year promises to be the biggest yet as the convention spreads to more rooms at the Birmingham NEC plus a slew of new food options as this year the EXPO is hosting a Food Festival to give the attendees a massive range of food options.

This event promises to be the biggest yet!

On top of the usual demonstrations, traders and tournaments, new events have been added to the schedule this year:

  • Children’s RPG: This includes Five Nights at Scoobys and Second Star to the Right.
  • You Awake to Find Yourself in a Dark Room: Fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, this comedy is based on the text-RPG adventures of the 1980’s, with host John Robertson combining script and ad lib as he guides audience members through a dungeon of the mind!
  • Always Be Rolling: Another Award winning comedy, this time from James Cook as he explores the impact of board games on his life and why the ‘classics’ like Monopoly and Risk suck.
  • The Bring and Buy: For an event of this size, a BandB would usually have been abandoned. But UKGE has decided instead to up their game and computerise the whole process.

It goes without saying that I’ll be there; hope to see you there too!

Unbreakable Imperator Furiosa: The Mad Max/Kimmy Schmidt Mash-Up You Didn’t Know You Needed

0

Every now and again comes a perfect mash-up; two things so diverse in tone they shouldn’t work together but, like a delicious ham and pineapple pizza, they just do. Check out the video below for a sublime splicing of Tina Fey’s new-girl-in-the-big-city sitcom The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Mad Max: Fury Road, George Miller’s eyeball-bleaching brain-blaster. You won’t be disappointed.

Bad Lip Reading are back with Redneck Avengers, Y’all!

0

The epically talented people over at Bad Lip Reading have done it again, this time they have turned our favourite Marvel superhero team – The Avengers, into red necks and it works so well. Y’all are a-goin’ ta love thay …uhh sowthern twang, pigglys wigglys ayn’ catchy theme tune.

Tunes for the Table

0

In the episode of The IT Crowd, “Jen The Fredo”, Moss hosts a tabletop role-playing session, using music to create an “atmos”. The result is, as we know, ruddy mysterious.

The right backing music in videogames enhances the experience for players immeasurably – after a while of hearing the same score, sure, you might mute the audio and stick something on over the top of Skyrim, but you’ll always go back to it. The problem with tabletop gaming is, they don’t include a CD in the box, or slip a recommended listening list into the back of the Dungeon Master’s Guide. Let’s try to fix that. Nothing will propagate a quiet atmosphere at the table like having no background noise, especially if your players are new or shy. So here are a few ways you can pump a little more atmos into your non-video-gaming.

Radio, Someone Still Loves You

Call me a weirdy-beardy-long-hair, but you’re probably going to want either Planet Rock or Classic FM (or regional equivalents). With the former, unless you’re playing Settlers of Catan, you’re going to fight something on the board at some point, and Alice Cooper will probably gel with a combat encounter better than whatever’s on Magic FM (NOT the preferred station for Arcane or Divine Casters). For the latter, classical music will be less of a distraction for the players, and work just like an orchestral score, underlining, but not overpowering the game at hand – this is the core principal of background music.

Feed My Frankenstein – A boss fight waiting to happen.

Cultivate An OST Collection

If you’re playing the Game of Thrones Board Game, you may as well put the soundtrack on. It’s as thematically appropriate as you’re going to get. Likewise, there are film and game scores out there that’ll match pretty closely to whatever vibe you’re trying to create, like using the Mass Effect Original Soundtrack in your CyberPunk Dystopia. Of course, if you’re running a D&D session for people in Middle Earth, or playing Star Wars: Edge of the Empire, then your choices for soundtrack are obvious, and will require zero work on your part, for a massive boost at the table.

Intro or Recaps should never take longer than the Crawling Text, nor last longer than the music.

The Collected Works of Nox Arcana

I’ve been soundtracking my gaming sessions and listening to them while I write for years. They basically compose scores and ambient music – imagine if Hans Zimmer just decided to start a solo project and not do films anymore. Their concept albums cover HP Lovecraft with “Necronomicon” (including cheeky Evil Dead reference), Edgar Allen Poe with “Shadow of the Raven“, and if you’re planning on playing anything High Fantasy or Pirate-themed, “Blood of the Dragon” and “Phantoms of the High Seas” aren’t just going to be right up your street, but might even inspire some quests. If you ever played the popular Civilization IV Mod “Fall From Heaven“, the team behind that used Nox Arcana for all the music. I really fell in love with them after listening to “Carnival Of Lost Souls“; over twenty tracks of creepy, ambient haunted carnival, with a hidden gem at the end. You really should listen to the album, but if you want to spoil the surprise, here’s the final track…

Did you listen to it all? Good, right? It isn’t usually their thing – they do ambient and Neoclassical, which is why that pretty much blew me away the first time I heard it. Go listen to one of their albums – and wonder why you never did before.

Bookmark Tabletop Audio

Like Nox Arcana, Tabletop Audio is either musical scores or ambient noise; not even really being music at all, but the sounds of creaking hulls, wind in the sails and bustle on the streets. I haven’t had a chance to use much from here yet, but its another place to turn to when you just need a bit of something filling the room, something to create that all-important atmosphere. Everything is even conveniently organised into browsing tabs for you, and the site features a playlist maker so you don’t even have to check back to it once you’re all set up.

Last But Not Least; YouTube

Unsurprisingly, YouTube can be a one-stop-shop for all your musical needs. There are playlists on there simply called “four hours of epic music” if you don’t feel like tailoring one yourself. You’ll also be able to find all your OSTs and Nox Arcana on there – but as much as I’ve talked about things being thematic, sometimes, it can be fun to change it up a bit. Recently, I ran a session of the original Serenity Roleplaying Game. It’d have been the obvious move to play the Firefly/Serenity soundtracks, right? Well we did, later on. But since this session was The Battle of Serenity Valley, I looked for something a little more militaristic in theme and feel. Lo and behold, the perfect thing was pre-playlisted on YouTube for me.

Reading my intro spiel out over this was pretty bloody cool. So there we go – you now have no excuse for a silent table.

Olivia Munn as Psylocke (Srsly!) in X-Men: Apocalypse

0

Over a month has passed since it was announced that Comic Geek Olivia Munn would play Psylocke in the upcoming movie “X-Men: Apocalypse” due to be released on May 27, 2016. I feel it’s time to give my two cents’ worth on the casting choice.

Psylocke as Olivia Munn or Olivia Munn as Psylocke?
Psylocke as Olivia Munn or Olivia Munn as Psylocke?

I am caught in a conundrum. On one side of the coin, when you compare the visual allure of Olivia Munn with x-men hottie Psylocke, It’s hard to deny she fits the bill perfectly (boner alert! not included).

I could rip Psylocke off the page of an x-men comic issue and alter her identity from Betsy Braddock to Olivia Munn. You won’t be able to find any discrepancy. The resemblance is striking, Indeed, it’s written in the stars that she would to be Psylocke.

Is that it??
Is that it??

Olivia Munn tempted my swollen heart with that Instagram pic. It had the caption “If the latex fits”, suggesting that it could be her Psylocke ensemble in the movie. Now, this may not ring well with the guys or gals, but if that is what Olivia is going to wear, it would be a major turn-off. Psylocke may be at home with her 1 piece bare-legged leotard in the comic world but this is reality. Besides, I don’t think Olivia will feel comfortable jumping around in it.

Sexy yet functional.
Sexy yet functional.

I’d prefer her to look this way, It won’t give her a super wedgie and offer adequate protection in combat.

It must be said, when it comes to comic book character portrayal, physical features aren’t everything. Olivia Munn is not, in my humble opinion, a prolific actress. Her roles from Big Stan to Chuck failed to impress me. In fact, she annoyed me no end. I wanted to throw the Blu-Ray discs into the bin only to realise I had paid for them. Bummer.

I wish I’m wrong and that it was just the way those characters were scripted. Being a massive x-men fan, I really hope Olivia Munn will get the job done with Psylocke. I will withhold  my inference of the character until I see the movie next year.

Enough of my rantings, what do you think of Oliva Munn as Psylocke?  Feel free to let  us know in the comments below.

Predator Dark Ages

0

Predator Dark Ages is a crowd funded fan film and is a brilliant example of an idea so ingenious it’s a little perplexing that it hasn’t actually already been done.

Taking the iconic alien hunter and placing it in a completely different context to that seen in any of the films to date, the past, 12th century England (the time of the setting isn’t stated this is just an educated guess). It’s already been established that the Predators have been hunting on Earth for hundreds if not thousands of years, as indicated in Predator 2 when Danny Glover’s Harrigan is handed an 18th century pistol by a Predator elder as a reward for defeating one of their hunters.

Adrian Bouchet is Thomas one of the Knights Templar and the leader of a war party called on by the church to slay a fearsome beast that has been terrorising the countryside, along with his party Thomas is joined by Sied (Amed Hashimi) a Saracen who has witnessed the beast they are hunting in Jerusalem.

2015-05-21_2304

Considering the distinctly limited funds they had to work with writer/director James Bushe and DP Simon Rowling have crafted a rather impressive short film which in essence blends elements from Ridley Scott’s Kingdom Of Heaven with the tone of Christopher Smith’s Black Death . Despite the limited running time meaning there’s little chance for deep characterisation Bouchet is excellent as the weary Templar and his war party have a convincing camaraderie, a prime example being when Brother Joseph (Bryan Hands) comments that this is no place for a woman upon seeing the steely eyed Freya (Sabine Crossen) the scout of the party Damien ( Ben Lloyd-Holmes) comments “You hear that, he mistook you for a woman”. The conflict between Bouchet and Hashimi is another aspect that’s well handled, Saracen’s and the Knights Templar are mortal enemies due to the crusades and the animosity between them is another nicely handled shade of characterisation.

2015-05-21_2327

As well making excellent use of the location with some impressive sweeping shots and good use of framing Bushe clearly knows that the key thing is atmosphere with a creeping sense of dread mounting as the war party discover that this beast is no myth. The Predator (Phillip Lane) is impressively done too with the various mandatory elements well handled despite the limited resources available.

This could’ve looked like a bunch of LARPers mucking about in the woods for the weekend without a talented crew and cast making everything look far better than you might think for such a shoe string budget. James Bushe and friends have made something which conceptually is far more interesting than Predators the last big screen outing for the alien hunter and is well executed.

Predator Dark Ages will be released via their Youtube channel 25 May.
