Crypt of the NecroDancer – Review

0

I’d heard a lot of good things about Crypt of the NecroDancer before I got to play it, and had seen a Let’s Play that intrigued me enough to give it a go. I am so, so glad that I chose to do so now!

Crypt of the NecroDancer is a Roguelike RPG much in the vain of The Binding of Isaac, one of my favourite games of recent years. You start out with one character and one limited set of weapons and items, and unlock more characters, zones, and items by playing through the starting area. The game is tough, meaning you will often fail during your first runs, but Crypt gets around this a little by providing a resource you gain from each playthrough to unlock more items: Diamonds. So even if you fail at the boss of Zone 1, you can still go back to the lobby and unlock upgrades or new items for the next run. In this fashion, the game takes away some of the frustration inherent in Roguelike games, and allows you to feel as though you are progressing with each run.

What makes Crypt of the NecroDancer really stand out is the rhythm game element: to move, attack, or use items, you must time your key presses to match the beat of a song. It may sound awkward, and can take a few minutes to get used to, but once it clicks the premise is fantastic. You get bonuses to gold and damage with certain weapons for matching the beat well, but are punished for missing a beat. Though doing so can be tactically advantageous with some enemies…

cryptotnd

Crypt of the NecroDancer even has support for mods and for loading your own music. So if you have some death metal you want to dungeon dive to, or want to see how the game works alongside Rihanna, the games inner workings can process any song you load into it and make it available alongside your adventuring.

The enemies in the starting zone are simple but tough, and there is a well-designed but short walkthrough that teaches you how to anticipate enemy movements and when to attack. The enemies progress quickly even within the same zone, so you can still be caught out, but almost none of them are really unfair. Even the mini-bosses mostly have predictable patterns.

Apart from the dragons. I spent the first five hours or so just giving up whenever I ran across a dragon, until I finally learned the patterns required to kill them. And that would be one of the larger criticisms of the game: that some minibosses and other enemies as the game progresses have more difficult patterns and techniques required with little indication of what they are. It’ll be fine, though, once you git gud.

cryptzone3

The weapon you hold also makes a big difference to the difficulty of the game. Finding a weapon with forward range, such as a spear or bow, can make the game much more manageable, whereas upgrades on the starting dagger make things awkward.. There is a good range of weapons available, improving the randomness and replayability of the game, The crossbow, though, requires reloading. This wasn’t explained anywhere, and I died a few times because my character wouldn’t attack.

Another petty grievance, but that’s all I really have against the game. It is gorgeously designed, the characters I’ve unlocked thus far as all interesting and unique, the gameplay and main premise are stellar, and the soundtrack is amazing. Brace Yourselves Games have produced a tiny gem, a classic. Simply put, anyone who enjoys Roguelikes or rhythm games will love Crypt of the NecroDancer. Buy it now on Steam.

TNMT: Out Of The Shadows Superbowl Trailer

0

For those of you that have been awaiting more from indie director and visionary auteur Michael Bay, the trailer for his latest experimental work TNMT: Out Of The Shadows hit the internet last night shortly after its debut during Superbowl MXV: Rise Of The Bowl. The sequel to what was described as “The toast of Cannes”, TMNT:OOTS sees the director move into a more expressionist, almost playful mode, including what appears to be Krang and the Technodrome, clearly references to the duality of man in a society more and more obsessed with automation and computerisation.

As always, the trailer is crammed with subtle nuance and little is revealed of what will surely be Mr Bay’s magnum opus, sharing a place in history alongside Brunelleschi’s Duomo and Gericault’s Raft of the Medusa.

But, I digress. Here for your delectation and delight, the TNMT: Out Of The Shadows Superbowl Trailer:

Captain America: Civil War, Superbowl Spot!!

Well then True Believers, it’s superbowl Sunday and that usually means the exclusive Trailer Spots for upcoming movies of 2016.

One such trailer was Captain America: CIVIL WAR and once again the Superbowl spot did not disappoint. New footage, more atmosphere, hashtags everywhere and what looks like one of the most anticipated armour upgrades from Tony Stark, yes the Bleeding Edge Armour looks to make its début.

Don’t take my word for it check it out below.

The Chronicles of Mega Shark

Ever since I was a little boy, I’ve always held a fascination for sharks. Apex predators of the sea, preying on anything and everything that comes into contact with them. Possessing rows of razor sharp teeth which can bite into anything and streamlined to mimic a biological torpedo barrelling towards you. I always thought to myself, is there anything more badass than a shark?

I have recently come across information that there are a series of films detailing ‘Mega Shark’s’ various battles against creatures of size and awe. Produced by infamous B movie studio, The Asylum, it promised battles of epic proportions, creatures dancing with the very concept of death and to hopefully not bore me to the point of tears. This is my perilous journey across the chronicles of Mega Shark.

Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus

megashark_octopussy

My first stop was at 2009’s Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus. Directed by Jack Perez and starring Deborah Gibson, Lorenzo Lamas and Vic Chao, I was promised a wild ride full of thrills, excitement and giant creatures of the deep, duking it out in a battle of supremacy. Who would emerge victorious? Which titan would swim victorious as king of the sea? I readied myself for 90 minutes of everything my life had been missing until this point.

The first act of destruction we are treated to comes courtesy of the Giant Octopus. An oil rig is taken down in one fell swoop in a display of power for the audience. While this was impressive, I had no doubt in my mind that the Mega Shark would take this as a challenge to show us just how superior he is. My initial thoughts were proven true when he leaps out of what is probably the ocean, although we never see it so I’m going to assume it was from the very depths of hell itself, to destroy a goddamned commercial airliner. I want to stress that said airliner was mid flight. Also known as a mile into the air. Your move octopus.

I was then disappointed to find out that most of the movie was going to revolve around a team of scientists who wanted to contain the creatures and a group of military men who wanted to destroy the creatures. The military obviously fail because humans can’t fight gods and they recruit the scientists to try and help them. All of their plans fail however because once again, who the hell do they think they are? Their one saving grace is that they finally come up with the idea of pitting the Mega Shark against the Giant Octopus, thus giving me what I’d been waiting a good 70 minutes to see.

The time had finally come. The Mega Shark was in one corner, the Giant Octopus in the other. The seas very own Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali had met. The fight of the century was about to begin. Of course the Mega Shark would win I thought, nothing could defeat a giant shark. Nothing! Imagine my surprise when after what I’m going to admit was quite the pitiful clash, both combatants float down apparently dead, to the bottom of the sea. Mega Shark couldn’t be dead. He was the lord of the sea, terror of the deep, bringer of watery doom. He would return, it was only a matter of time.

Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus

740full-mega-shark-vs.-crocosaurus-poster

Christopher Ray brought us Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus in 2010. Starring a generic navy scientist, a generic strong independent female woman and a bizarro Crocodile Dundee, I hoped it would be able to bring me everything that the giant octopus couldn’t. Mainly, a fight with a believable adversary, I refuse to live in a world where an octopus could fight to a standstill with a shark, it was absolute madness. The opponent in this round came in the form of a gigantic crocodile and I do mean gigantic. Easily bigger than fan favourite Mega Shark, it seemed he had his work cut out for him this time around.

My fears were somewhat stifled however when Crocosaurus was tranquillized by a single man, even if that single man was Crocodile Dundee’s drunken doppelgänger. Mega Shark took on armies, battleships, the very concept of a monster movie itself. Was this really his opponent this time around? I started to get the feeling that this was going to be a very short movie. I would have to wait until the actual fight.

I sat watching the film until some of the characters inevitably set Crocosaurus loose into the ocean amidst a Mega Shark attack. This was it! The contest was about to begin. It did not begin. Cue another 20 minutes of monster separation and futile human intervention. Had the navy learned nothing? It was clearly better to let the monsters fight it out while they sat back. Popcorn optional. The humans eventually decided to lure both monsters to an undersea volcano. An epic stage had been set, the battlefield decided.

In the middle of all this chaos, Mega Shark managed to swallow a nuclear submarine, this was no longer just a fight, this was a superhero origin story. The two monsters sunk their teeth into one another as this was all that they were really equipped to do. If the volcano hadn’t erupted at that moment then who knows what could have happened. Once again, both monsters sank to the bottom of the sea, seemingly dead. But I know that Mega Shark will be back. Back and more radioactive than ever.

Mega Shark vs Mecha Shark

MEGAvMECHA_large

Now while Mega Shark hadn’t actually won a fight yet, he hadn’t lost one either and that was good enough for me to retain my faith in him. I hoped that this film, directed by Emile Edwin Smith in 2014 had the ability to empower my favourite giant killing machine. Although that faith may never have the opportunity to be supported because the Mega Shark featured in this film was a completely new one. Let’s call him Mega Shark 2.0. Upon seeing the gnarled markings all over it’s body and witnessing its opening action of decapitating the sphinx with a piece of debris, I decided that this one was much better.

Every hero had to encounter an evil robot clone of themselves at one point, if it’s good enough for Bill and Ted then it’s good enough for Mega Shark 2.0. A tale of shark vs machine was about to unfold, the ocean’s greatest killing machine pitted against a creation of the land’s. Would my new Mega Shark achieve what his predecessor never could and make me truly proud? Nope, he died too. I was beginning to grow weary of all of this.

Another draw, I’m out.

Legends of Tomorrow – Blood Ties

Another week, another Legends of Tomorrow episode. This one might actually be my most favourite one yet. Unlike with the past two instalments, this one was much tamer in terms of action, but it managed to give almost all actors and actresses involved a moment to show their acting chops and to shine.

legends-of-tomorrow-blood-ties-lotz-darvill-580x386

**SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT**

This week our team finds itself still stuck in 1975, due to Kendra’s injury. It seems like not even superior futuristic technology can fix what’s broken, so for the moment staying put and hoping for the better is what Rip recommends. Except our Time Lo…Master, has concocted another plan to get back at Savage, hit him where it hurts, straight into his bank account.

This is Legends of Tomorrow though, where things never go as planned, so by the 5th minute mark I was already starting to anticipate everything that could go wrong for everyone. But that’s half of the fun with this show, isn’t it?

Rip and Sara make an unlikely team, joining their efforts in order to figure out where Savage keeps his fortune and making sure they take it off his hands. Arthur Darvill and Caty Lotz were brilliant, each bringing their A game to every scene they shared. The traumas that plague them both might be different, but they manages to connect them, without seeming contrived or too heavy handed. Of course, the fact that they left the expert thieves ”at home” while casing a bank seemed stupid to me, but what do I know?

Still, that allowed for the other half of our plot du jour to kick off. Left to his own devices, with a smaller ship at his convenience, Leonard Snart decided to take a trip down memory lane and do a little bit of temporal surgery on his own past. Alongside Mick Rory, his faithful  companion and the young, impressionable Jax, he travelled to Central City to steal an emerald. To everyone else it seemed like a perfectly self-centered, Captain Cold thing to do, but it soon became apparent there was more to the situation than met the eye. The man accused earlier by Rip Hunter of being thick, our hot blooded Heatwave, figured it out first. (I am still going to pitch for an episode that gives us more backstory on these two, because they work so well together and also, I am a sucker for bromance.) 7710628_dcs-legends-of-tomorrow-blood-ties-extended_516c990_m

Leonard wants to change the past and give himself, his mother and sister a brighter future to look towards. Jax, the youngest of their group is the one to remind him that changing timelines is a bad idea, but he gets nothing but a rebuke for his efforts. Wentworth Miller has a particular approach to Cold, his mannerism, the way he speaks, it makes Leonard Snart  memorable. You won’t ever be confused as to who this character, guaranteed. But in Blood Ties things changed, there were cracks in his usual persona, allowing us all to see a little more of the man underneath the icy mask, making him more than the one-dimensional villain he seems hell-bent on being thought as.

Mick Rory might have not said much this time around, but his actions showed more about his character than words ever could. The way he immediately agreed to give up the Maximilian Emerald, despite his self-centred nature actually said a lot of the relationship he and Snart have, while also shedding some light on his motivations for being there. Maybe we’ll see him try and alter history for his benefit as well, maybe not, but so far I can only hope that one way or another, he’ll be given something more to do. I still feel like Dominic Purcell is criminally underused so far.

Alternating with these two stories – that I will shamelessly consider more important – we get to see Kendra’s health slowly deteriorating, with Ray and Dr. Stein trying to figure out a solution. I was not a big fan of Atom, not sure I am right now, but he did grow on me a little, again, mostly because of the way Brandon Routh chose to play his scenes. Victor Garber and Routh managed to have more chemistry in the few minutes of screen time they shared in one episode than Atom had with anyone else so far in the two parter pilot. Could be because he was finally given something more to do than pick on the inferiority  of the team’s criminal elements. Not that I’m bitter about it or anything.

Back to Rip and Sara, after a major debacle at the bank where all supervillains leave their fortunes to be properly guarded,  they take the man in charge back to their ship to get out whatever information they can out of him. The scenes leading to this one showed once more why Sara Lance is one of the best characters on the show. Caity Lotz slowly reveals more and more layers of her character, making her more than just the brute of the group, the muscle that can take out a room full of people and still crave blood. Her admission that she still feels the need to kill after the pit showed a more vulnerable side that I feel the fans of the character forget it exists. The fact that Rip showed up his own vulnerable side, while also being supportive was the cherry on top. But, I do have a major pet peeve involving Rip Hunter. He already tried to kill Savage once in the past, why, WHY? didn’t he just kill the man with a gun, opting instead for a knife?

It was ironic, in a painful and bitter kind of a way, to realise that Rip is single handedly responsible for at least the death of his family, after carelessly revealing their names to Savage and that he might also be responsible for making the man so determined to become immortal and hunt down Rip, someone who attempted to murder him 4000 years ago. Talk about holding a grudge.

dcs-legends-of-tomorrow-photos-from-blood-tiesCZ6xFgMWYAAXl1q

I think one of the points this episode drives homes, if we take each story separately, is that they all actually need each other. They all went off doing their own thing: trying to defeat Savage, trying to safeguard a better future for themselves, trying to save Kendra, but there was no communication between them. No one knew (or cared) where the others were. They are still not a team by the halfway mark of the episode, but the signs that they might head in that direction are there.

The ending actually paid off, when Rip and Sara discovered that Savage wanted to use Carter’s body to share some of the gift of immortality with his followers. They ended up in danger, only to trigger a chain reaction that brought the more action prone team members together in order to save the two and retrieve Carter’s body, to keep him from being further desecrated. It’s funny how Carter is still the one managing to keep the team together, from beyond the grave. I still feel like his absence didn’t change much. Perhaps his actor is amazing in general, but he fails to impress me as Carter Hall. I feel nothing when I think he is dead and he might not be coming back. Who am I kidding? Of course he’ll return.

At the risk of sounding cruel, I still think Ciara Renee is the weakest link in the cast. Given most of her interactions were with the equally wooden Falk Henschel, things might improve with him gone, but I will not hold my breath for that.

All in all, an amazing episode, with great character development, interactions between characters that shared little screen time before, a nice enough focus on showing instead of telling and a lot of pushing the story forward. At least we’re leaving the ’70s. Go parachute pants!

Activate! BBC’s returning Robot Wars series gets new presenters

0

Dara

Following the recent announcement by the BBC that popular series Robot Wars ,which sounds a bit like an animated series set in the dystopian future but isn’t, is coming back the next thing people wanted to know was, who was going to present it?

Well people now have their answer, despite former host Craig Charles saying he was interested the BBC has just announced the new presenter will be comedian Dara Ó Briain, probably best known as the host of long running BBC comedy panel show Mock The Week. Ó Briain will joined by co-host Angela Scanlon and the returning Jonathan Pearce as commentator.

Personally I can’t really see Ó Briain’s trademark wryly mocking approach fitting with Robot Wars or see him getting as into it as Craig Charles did but that remains to be seen.

Forbidden Stars

0

Forbidden Stars is the newest Games Workshop IP game to be released by Fantasy Flight Games… WHY FANTASY FLIGHT WHY?! Two of my favourite things, come together to make more awesome things, my wallet can’t take any more of this!

Anyway, I digress. Forbidden Stars is a 2 – 4 player strategy game where you pit the forces of the Imperium, Chaos, Eldar or Da Orkz against each other for galactic domination.

Ostensibly a conquest game, a la , Risk and games of that ilk, FS also seems to take a nod at one of Fantasy Flight’s first big ventures, twilight Imperium, with modular tiles, resource management and lots of minis, ranging from Scouts to tanks to Titans and Heavy battleships. All things I love, and, as is standard with nearly all Fantasy flight games, you are awash with Cards, tokens and dials.. they do love tokens and dials.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jdHgh2LCNI

Having decided to play a game of descent that day, only for a bunch of people not to turn up, my much diminished group decided to try out a new acquisition.

None of us had played FS before and it was very much a case of learn as we went along, and, despite some minor ambiguities and some misinterpretations of the rules… I miss Interpreted the ruwels… (cartmenez voice)  it went pretty well.

QUICK RUN DOWN

ORDERSfs01-order-tokens

You each have separate order tokens that you place 4 of (each in turn, one at a time) in the centre of each system tile, now big deal you may say, but its all about stacking and debating what you opponent is going to do.. if I put down a ‘Dominate’ order to increase my resources in the area, with the plan to build after on my second order but an opponent drops his/her order tile on top of mine, he goes first and I have to sit helplessly as they invades my system and hope I can hold out before i can reinforce.

CARDScombat-card-fan

There are three sets of Cards in FS, two of which are unique to each faction and can be used to add bonuses to your attacks / defence and the Third is an event deck, which can be turned in return for an order token, giving random effects to the board.

TOKENS

As tokens go, there are 3 main types, consisting of resource tokens to allow you to buy units and upgrade cards; Forge tokens that allow you to build higher tier units like: Land raiders and titans and reinforcement tokens that give you some needed support in certain crucial planets / sectors.

COMBAT

fs01-combat-car-fan

Combat consist of picking a card from your hand and rolling the dice. The dice themselves consisting of Skulls for defence, Bolters for attack and Aquilas for morale (morale only comes into it if you hit a 3rd round of attacks)

The attacker rolls the dice for his units, adds up his bolters and the bonuses on his card, the defender does the same but counts up skulls and then the difference is the amount of casualties.

If the attacks go on for 3 round and there is no winner then every one counts up the number of aquilla (the eagles) on their dice and cards and the person with the least…runs away; simplz.

RULES AND GAME PLAY

Rules are set out step by step, with elaborations in the glossary, nothing is overly complicated and after a while we got the main nack of what we were doing, without having to refer to them much.. although we did make a huge mistake with regard reinforcements and were stockpiling them like canned food in an apocalypse. Making the battle sizes pretty epic at times; something we agreed wasn’t actually a bad thing because, despite the setting, epic warfare in the 41st millennium, the game lacks scale in my opinion, something again reduced by the time limit, which is only 8 turns.

This, of course, is personal preference. I enjoy bigger and longer games, I enjoy building up forces and trying to work out weaknesses in the enemies defences and this game, as much as that is an option to a point, you are very aware of the time limit and the fact that you have to get a certain amount of objectives as well as stopping others getting theirs , which may, in a few occasion be on planets you control.

fs01-layout

Don’t get me wrong, the time limit and the limited size of forces does force you to engage faster, making for faster quicker games and in our case a very interesting and hard fought last couple of turns, but again, personal preference, if you are going to have a game set with an epic back drop, give the player the option to make it, well.. epic!

Now I appreciate that this is just the initial box set and there is a lot of scope for add-ons, as is fantasy flight tradition: Tau, Necrons, Tyranids and of course all the different Imperial factions. and its not a super fast game, even with the rules down to pat, as people take a lot of time debating what orders they are going to play; a mechanic I really enjoyed.

But even so I feel that games like this should not be restrictive and should maybe include advanced rules for longer play, more rounds and larger forces; don’t want to spend a lot of money on units plastic models FF? Then follow the Axis and Allies model and have tokens that represent different amounts; done!

Minor preferences aside the game is very enjoyable and the meandering warp storms that block your way to certain routes on a turn by turn basis help give a sense of randomness to proceedings and stacked orders make you anticipate what the other players are likely to do and react accordingly.

CONCLUSIONfs01-plastic

We all enjoyed playing Forbidden Stars. Its easy enough to pick up, its not a super short game nor is it very long, it does have some scale, depending on how many players there are, the Minis are nice and there is, of course, a lot of room for expansions; which I personally am looking forward to.

All in all I cant fault it more than some options for a larger / longer play style but again with expansions coming out this could, and most likely will, be addressed,

Definitely worth the £65 price tag.

Legends of Tomorrow – Pilot, Part 2

Another week, another episode featuring our favourite misfits! This time around I was actually much happier and less prone to draw parallels with Doctor Who, focusing instead on the story at hand. As you might remember from Part 1 of the show, our band of future legends, have ended up involved in the efforts of securing a future for the world, after Vandal Savage has decided to single handedly take over it all. Immortality, right? If you can’t die, what’s there left for you other than world domination?

**SPOILERS BELOW**

Picking up from where they left off the week before, still in search of Savage, our time-travelling companions find themselves in Norway, still trying to save the world, with various degrees of success. This time around they need to stop Savage from selling a nuclear warhead to the highest bidder and what better way to do that than by posing as buyers? I had a distinct feeling that this was very much like an A-Team episode, except the plan did not  come together  as intended. But…at least they tried?

The ”team” members, and I use the word loosely, are still trying to find their groove (What? They are in the ’70s!) and the friction between them is obvious. Everyone wants to lead, everyone has a plan, but no one wants to listen to what the other has to say. I for one appreciated the realism of the situation. Teams that come together and work like well oiled machines after less than a week scare me. Every character’s individuality is respected and hints are offered to their backgrounds and motivations, without being particularly heavy-handed.

Except for when it comes to our two Hawks, who, while seemingly central to the plot, are managing in some miraculous way, to remain at the periphery of my interest. They are the two that have met Savage thousands of years ago, were murdered by him repeatedly and have their fates entwined with his, yet the wooden acting, the lack of chemistry and the dumbing down of the two characters make for two of the least compelling characters I’ve seen on TV in recent years. I mean, I found myself cheering as Carter died. And I’m not okay with that, yet there it was. This is why people end up rooting for the villains or the designated bad guys!

legends_of_tomorrow_2

Our little undercover group fails to maintain their cover while buying nuclear weapons and the seemingly simple operation devolves into chaos, with everyone joining in on the fray, while Savage escapes with the threat of blowing up Norway. Firestorm, who wasn’t given all that much to do last week is given the chance to shine and he manages to save the day twice. Norway is safe for now, but the timeline has been altered, and not for the best, when Atom managed to lose a piece of technology from his suit – now the world is getting destroyed at an even faster pace. He’s properly chastised by Rip, who unlike last week has very little to do this time around. Given the size of the cast, it’s not easy to make sure the spotlight shines on everyone, but they need to find a better way to balance things or they’ll end up with a sizeable amount of talent wasted on one liners and nothing more.

legends-epp-2

However, that particular conflict was solved in under 10 minutes of runtime, which reminds me of all the other convenient things that happen to make sure the plot moves along at a steady pace, whether it works or not. Sara manages to recover the piece of technology, kicking ass and taking names, much like she did before and I for one was deeply satisfied with it. She is strong, she is smart and she knows it. What’s more important, everyone else knows it too. With one crisis averted, but also with enough runtime to go, a new important detail comes to the light. There might be a way to end Savage. Which…brings us back to our resident, uninteresting Hawks. Given how only a particular weapon can kill the immortal, what else to do than find the weapon? Alas, as it happens, it was Vandal Savage that owned it in the first place and he makes quick work of catching our thieves – Captain Cold and Heatwave, surprisingly joined by the boy scout Atom. Nothing wrong with being a boy scout, but when criminal activities are involved it might be a better idea to allow the pros to deal with it. Just saying. (I am still rooting for Captain Cold and Heatwave though – they are my favourites. Yes, Prison Break might have something to do with that.)

legends-of-tomorrow-arrow-saison-4-arrow

With Captain Cold, Heatwave and Atom out of commission, everyone else comes to the rescue. Hawkgirl and Hawkman are especially eager, considering they finally figured out a way to put Savage down for good: the very knife they were there to steal in the first place. But it’s only the second episode and killing Savage would put our Legends out of business, so steps must be taken to ensure his survival. Unfortunately it means another dumbing down of the Hawks who are beaten quickly and swiftly by Vandal. Carter ends up murdered, the reveal that only Kendra can kill Savage with the knife comes, and.. she… abandons her Hawkgirl persona mid-fight to hold Carter in her arms as he dies. It would be understandable if it weren’t stupid. I’m sorry, but this is why the two of them ended up dead over and over and over again through the ages! Do not turn your back on the enemy! Have I mentioned she gets stabbed by Savage when she’s  not paying attention?! Unfortunately…erm…I mean, luckily, she survives and she will live to fight another day.

I’ve been a fan of comics for long enough to know that what is dead never stays dead for long, but fingers crossed Carter does not make some surprise revival. I mean, his death did seem to motivate the team to stay together and! in a surprising twist! it was not the woman that met her untimely demise this time around.

There was a little side-plot involving Dr. Stein who looks for his younger self in order to get a piece of technology that would help them in their mission and his desperation to ensure that his meeting with his wife happens was actually touching. Victor Garber is a great actor and he actually shines in this episode. You know, it could be the fact that he hadn’ abducted anyone  after using a roofie on them that actually made him more likeable… Still Rip’s willingness to help him as he almost fails to have his chance encounter with his future wife revealed that Rip, under his ”harsh exterior” still remembers why having someone that loved you and that you loved in return in your life matters so much. He only has his memories, after all.

All in all, the episode was great, hopefully this week’s episode will be even better. I’ll leave you with the promo for it. It definitely looks interesting.

DarkMaus – Soulsborne Indie RPG released

0

With the success and critical acclaim of From Software’s ‘Souls’ games, and Bloodborne, it is perhaps unsurprising that the challenging action RPG has spawned its own genre of sorts. From the somewhat good Lords of the Fallen to the forthcoming Salt and Sanctuary, a number of other developers have taken their love for the Soulsborne games and tried to emulate the oppressive difficulty and meticulous design principles of Hidetaka Miyazaki.

The latest homage to be released is DarkMaus, a top-down adventure game with a distinctive art style and some interesting takes on the Soulsbourne tropes.

Developer Daniel Wright has been working on this games for quite some time, as is evidenced by this Reddit post back in 2014 which earned some interest and positive comments from the Dark Souls community, and the Let’s Plays I’ve seen of the game show a tight, well-designed and atmospheric offering.

If you have a few quid spare, and are hankering for something to tide you over between The Old Hunters and Dark Souls 3, you would be mad to overlook this Indie gem. Buy it on Steam here.

Deadpool encourages us to touch ourselves

CZvA-9XWwAAFEj3

Of all the campaigns I’ve seen when it comes to cancer, especially Testicular; The Marketing ideas coming out of Marvel Studios and Disney are hitting the nail on the head. Starring Ryan Reynolds, and due out this February, the film promotion has hit a lot of high marks with their outlandish billboards, cheeky posters and some eyebrow raising TV spots that would have a televangelist blushing. This on the other hand was inspiring.

On a subject that hits close to home for myself and  to have a character like Deadpool be a voice for a campaign like #‎touchyourselftonight, is brilliant. He’s outspoken, brash, sarcastic and always humorous but in this instance it’s a serious topic and everyone’s favourite Merc with a Mouth is able to find the funny in something that effects 1 in 5 men all around the world.

The registered charity in question is “Ballboys”, they’re raising awareness and educating the population (not just the guys) on the facts, figures and issues while also providing resources and information to anyone who is concerned about, or directly affected; Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men aged 15-49 years old, but it is one of the most curable cancers if detected early.

Thankfully we have Deadpool to encourage us to “touch ourselves” and not since The Divinyls have we been more inclined to agree.

If you would like to aid in the support for “Ballboys” and their hashtag #‎touchyourselftonight, please go to www.ballboys.org.ukwhere you can make a donation and also find out more on how you can check yourself and what to look out for.

To tell us more, here is our favorite Merc! Deadpool
