Wulverblade – Xbox One

0

Video review is here:

or the written word below:

About 3 years ago, myself, and a couple of GPers, were on our annual jaunt around Play Expo in Manchester, when we came across a big flat screen TV, surrounded by nice branding, Roman Helmets and an interesting looking Historic Hack and Slash game called….Wulverbalde. Now  I’ll not give you a complete run down but in short we played a bit of the game talked to a nice chap called Mike, did an Interview (see below) and then went about our day; looking forward to the release of the game later that year. Issue is it didn’t, nor did it the next year, nor the next. I’d semi forgotten about the title to be honest when suddenly, last month, I got an email informing me that it was going to be out soon and did I want a review copy… ummm yeah!

Wulverblade is a classic hack and slash type beatem up game where in you are a member of a Northern British Tribe, past Hadrian’s Wall, faced with the looming encroachment of your territory by Pro Roman forces and the Romans themselves. Using a variety of attacks and weapons you have to travel through the land, severing limbs, cutting off heads and generally showing the Romans why Hadrian’s Wall was built in the first place!

As mechanics go, if you loved your classics like: Golden Axe, Turtles, Streets of Rage, Final Fight then you will need little introduction on how Wulverblade works. Each of the 3 characters has specific strengths and weaknesses, more damage, speed etc and using the attack button you hack away at your enemies, with slight variations, like the jump attack, a roll, a charge that knocks the enemy over, a close attack that allows you to throw them if you want and a once per stage attack that enables you to call in wolves to finish off your foes for you; so far no change.

But where Wulverblade seems to differ slightly from its retro forebears is with things like ground kills, if an enemy is stunned, a heavy attack when you pick up and collect heavy weapons, a special attack that builds up power as you fight and lets you enter a berserker rage and even a block, something, especially on the games mentioned above, you were unable to do. On top of this you are able to use the environment to your advantage, picking up knives, spears , impale enemies on barricades and even use the peoples severed heads and limbs as projectiles; It honestly never gets old!

If you add this to the cartoonish but beautifully rendered animation, replete with Slow motion, 300 style finishing strikes; an active foreground and background and of course the history within ,you have a nostalgic feeling game that delivers something more, and, in a lot of ways, improves upon it.

Old school beatem ups tended to be just mindless button bashers that fed off how much money you could afford to put in, with skill being a minimal priority; my Girlfriends 6 year old girl showing this very aptly when she completed Golden Axe, on my emulator, in a few hours. With enough lives you can get past most, if not all levels, just by hack, slash repeat. This game though, as much as the hack, slash genre is a part of its bedrock, does not reply on it completely and I got the sense, after a few hours of doing said actions and dying.. a lot.. that more was needed and I would have to be wiser, use my power attacks, save my power up and use my damn shield!

As it is you seem to have 3 levels of difficulty on campaign, with easy, Normal, (what I’m on) and Arcade, which only gives you 3 lives and 3 continues; very old school indeed, but double hard. On top of this there is also  the arena mode which pits you up against increasingly harder enemies and doesn’t give you much life; I got up to wave 9 last night before being cut down by some armour wearing Romans.

And if that wasn’t enough to keep you hooked there are achievements, collectibles, High scores and history lessons galore; that’s right you heard me, you learn while you play too.

All this being said I do have one small gripe about Wulverblade and it’s not so much the game itself but my preference on button load outs and it would seem, on Xbox one at least, more intuitive to have the block button mapped to the left trigger so you can block then slash, block then slash.. as it is, the buttons are mapped only one way and I found it harder to use and therefore a harder game to play; would have been nice to have the option to change your setup.

Apart from that, I’ve not had so much fun playing a Beatem up in years. It takes a nostalgic feeling genre and  updates and improves upon it; with plenty of scope for competition and replay-ability

A must buy and a lot of fun.

Kickstarter spotlight Eternal Kings

0

Rolanda Issa’s Eternal Kings does something which strikes me as such a ‘why has nobody done this already?’ thing it kind boggles my mind. Eternal Kings to explain it in a simple way takes Chess, which almost everybody has played at some point, and combines it with a card game like for example Magic The Gathering.

But that simple explanation does a disservice to the depth of the game.

The pieces of the chess board, pawns, rooks, knights, bishops, queen and king are replaced by creature cards on the board that make up a player’s army. These creatures have attack, life, discipline and abilities. Different abilities impact how the game play unfolds, but the use of abilities is strategic as once a creature has used its ability it won’t be able to use it again the next turn. The aim of the game is to kill your opponent’s king.

Player’s also have a deck of ability cards which will come into play during the game and further impact gameplay.

Cards are split into four factions Strength, Agility, Wisdom and Intelligence and each of those factions has different strengths and weaknesses. Strength favours initiative and brute force, Agility favours speed and traps, Wisdom favours defence and coordination whilst Intelligence favours versatility.

This is all set in a fantasy version of Earth struck by cataclysmic events where the elements themselves have come alive to strike down humanity. A fight for survival begins. Some embrace the elements, some embrace the chaos, some turn to ruthless warlords that promise them salvation, others embrace prophets worshipping forgotten dark gods.

This world is brought to life via some impressive art work.

There are lots of board games and card games fighting for backers on Kickstarter from established gaming companies, Eternal Kings isn’t one of those. This is a game that has a lot of potential, both as a game with plenty of depth and replayability, and as a game that can easily be expanded in the future.

Eternal Kings is currently on Kickstarter.

MCM Birmingham Comic Con is back for 2018!

Opening the convention season of 2018, MCM Birmingham Comic Con will bring an action-packed weekend of pop culture to the NEC, when it returns to the West Midlands on 17-18 March. Featuring everything from comics, movies, games and sci-fi to cosplay, anime and steampunk.

Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead and Guardians of the Galaxy) has been announced as meeting fans over the weekend.  Despite his aggressive roles, Rooker is by all accounts a thoroughly nice chap. Also appearing will Brianna Hildebrand, who plays the awesomely-named Negasonic Teenage Warhead in Deadpool.  Finally, Mark Sheppard who has starred in Supernatural, Firefly and Battlestar Galactica, will be taking the time to meet his fans.

For videogame fans, MCM is bringing glory and victory to Birmingham with four of Overwatch’s heroes in the form of Anjali Bhimani, Jonny Cruz, Carolina Ravassa and Fred Tatasciore.

During the blockbuster weekend, fans can meet special guests from the world of TV and film, voice actors and more, explore the Comic Village packed with artists, writers and graphic novelists, watch on-stage panels, play the latest games and check out the awesome costumes from the world of Cosplay.

SFW in the City II: Sci-Fi Fantasy Warriors!

Following the rip-roaring launch of Sci-Fi in the City last year (reviewed here), its second coming will arrive at Sheffield’s O2 Academy on the first weekend of October 2018 (Earth Time), with a special pre-party on Friday 5th. This year it is reborn as SFW in the City II: Sci-Fi Fantasy Warriors!

The headlining guests so far include Tim Rose, who is best known for playing Admiral Ackbar (“It’s a Trap!”) in Return of the Jedi.  Tim reprised the iconic Admiral in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi and was also the puppeteer of Sy Snootles and Salacious Crumb in Return of the Jedi.

Garrick Hagon, who appeared in Star Wars: A New Hope as Luke’s friend Biggs Darklighter, will be there too. Garrick’s film career includes Tim Burton’s Batman, Richard Attenborough’s A Bridge Too Far, and many others.

Also appearing will be Adam Brown, who played the dwarf warrior-scribe Ori in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit films and starred in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales as Cremble, who was smarter than the average pirate (something to do with him wearing glasses, apparently).

In addition to the stars of film and television, SFW will be showcasing sci-fi, fantasy and comic artists, including Jeff Cummins, whose work you’re probably familiar with from Radio Times as well as many cover illustrations for Doctor Who novelisations.

Providing the evening entertainment will be EZXP, a video game-inspired band who take the 8-bit tunes of our childhoods and turn them into rock to have even the most jaded convention goer dancing.  These also will be the “cantina band” Blues Harvest that will be blasting the night away with covers from movies and television (as well as a few guilty pleasures).

For a more cerebral entertainment, the comedian James Cook (who is not a famous explorer) will be leading Pandemic Live, where four players battle ‘the spirit of disease’ in a live version of the classic board game. Played by guests and audience alike, Pandemic Live is a (funnily enough) a live version of the wildly-popular board game Pandemic.

Finally, Saturday evening will play host to a carnival of costumes, music, and dancing, with speciality acts! You can guarantee that nowhere else in Sheffield will offer anything like what will be going down at SFW in the City!

So, lock and load, for SFW in the City is coming.

Tickets and hotels can be booked now by calling 0207 193 0490, or online:
