Sleeping Dogs Review (PS3) – 7GPPs

0

Straight to the Point : Great game, just not good enough for the £45 price tag

Go to the Video Games reviews section of this page and before this review got published there was only one reviewer – our resident site admin Matt, and as the forums will proclaim, he’s an X-Boxer, so yours truly has decided that there needs to be some PS3 reviews up in this place, and where better to start than my holding game till Borderlands 2 hits; Sleeping Dogs?

You can read this anywhere on this here interwebs but for those who haven’t read any news or reviews on this game before, It started life as True Crime: Hong Kong and was practically built before Activision decided that it was costing too much to create and threw it in the bin. luckily for us Square Enix opted to throw enough money to get the game released but didn’t want to take up the True Crime series name and instead gave it the new name of Sleeping Dogs.

I got asked a while back what it was like and replied that it was Grand Theft Auto in Hong Kong, with more Pork Buns and less Cousins wanting to go bowling. Having given it sometime now I don’t think I did the game justice, as it is much, much more than that.

The first thing you’ll notice is that it is graphically amazing, and looks like the Hong Kong many of us have probably seen on screen and a few in person. Look out over the ocean at the sunrise or sunset and it’s probably an even better view than if you actually travelled there and did it yourself, in that thing called real life.

The Story

You take the role of Wei Shen, a cop who has been tasked with infiltrating the Sun On Yee, a triad organisation that HKPD have been trying to bring down. Anyone who’s familiar with Hong Kong Cinema will instantly feel right at home with the tale that ensues of murder, deceit, high speed car chases, gun fights and kung fu.

The Game itself

When you get to the crux of the game it is always going to draw comparisons to Grand Theft Auto, what with it being a sand-box game where you steal cars; do varied missions, which include things such as: ‘Go Kill Him’, ‘Take this to there’, ‘Go destroy this’ and ‘Steal this and get away from the cops’, and the side missions where you have several support characters who take you away from the main story. All of which are very familiar, but the comparisons whilst understood, is an unfair one, as the gameplay in Sleeping Dogs feels very different indeed.

Essentially, the game Is a lot easier to play. I’ve literally done every mission now in less than 3 weeks of buying it and this is from someone who hardly ever finishes games, in fact other than the Arkham and Lego series’ I can’t recall another PS3 game where I’ve got to the end of the story, let alone 100%’d it.

The easiness of playing is mostly down to the controls/npc characters, get into a chase with the police and it never escalates. Eventually you will be able to outrun them, even if you’ve got one of the slower cars, as they just can’t navigate the more narrow Hong Kong streets; anyone who’s ever played a Saints Row or a GTA will be more than at home on them. Then there’s the fight mechanism’s, a quick press of a button and most of the time you’ll have your opponent in a hold where you can easily beat the snot out of him, if you can’t get a hold of him, then all you need to do is wait for him to turn red and then very similar to the Arkham Asylum/City fight system, 1 button will start a counter attack.

Becca’s Pick of the Best Geek Parody Songs Around

1

The first one I have chosen shouts Geek Girl power! Plus it has the lovely Seth Green doing a little rapping.Whilst they don’t have the best voices it’s nice to see the geek girls represent and acts as a reminder that there are far more hard core geek girls then the media portrays. Mini rant over, enjoy the sexy geeks:

Next one is again something close to my heart, table top roleplay gaming. Nothing quite like pretending to be someone more awesome then yourself and kicking ass. Plus it is such a catchy tune, even my 9 year old daughter has added it to her playlist.

Actually this one was found by my aforementioned daughter, who is going through a Minecraft obsessed phase. I know I’m so proud she is such a little geek.

WARNING: Dark Knight spoilers! A parody of the film to the song you can’t get away from ‘Call Me Maybe’. I consider this to be a far superior version.

Now I couldn’t do a list like this without including something to do with my favs the X-Men. Unfortunately I failed to censor it for my kids and now Xander (4) runs around shouting “I’m the Juggernaut, pitch” close and thankfully not quite right.

Star Wars Reads Day! 6th October 2012

0

Not really sure how I missed this! In July StarWars.com declared the 6th of October to be Star Wars Reads day. They invite fans to come together and celebrate reading and Star Wars.  Disappointingly the majority of the events appear to happen in America, with raffles and giveaways to entice folks, as well as some events having writers and costumed characters on hand.

But the lack of inclusion here in the UK should not stop us. Literacy is important so open your calendar app and add this awesome event to October the 6th. This is  your advance warning! Sometimes life and the internet get in the way and you may find lacking the time to pick up a book.  I implore you, support literacy and read Star Wars on the 6th October, whether its the Millennium Falcon User Manual or C-3PO’s Diaries, READ SOMETHING!!

You can join in with the fun on Facebook – Star Wars Reads

Weekly Comics Roundup (12/09/12)

THE BEST OF MARVEL

AvX Round 11 (writer: Brian Michael Bendis; artist: Olivier Coipel)

Quite possibly the best premise for a crossover event since Marvel vs. DC in 1995, AvX has managed to tear fan loyalties just as much as Civil War did, only with a world-destroying cosmic entity instead of politics.  The title is a little inaccurate now, since it’s not so much Avengers vs. X-Men as it is everyone on Earth-616 against the catchily-titled Phoenix Five.  The Avengers have managed to take out Namor, Colossus and Magik, but that’s only served to make Cyclops and Emma Frost stronger.  What follows is an all-out war, with a climax that is just… wow.

Honourable mention here must go to Uncanny X-Men #18 (writer: Kieron Gillen; artist: Ron Garney) for its commentary on the proceedings- Colossus and Magik deal with the aftermath, but the ordeal isn’t over for poor Colossus yet; and Scott and Emma have the most psychotic dinner since Hannibal Lecter tried to find out what goes well with red wine.  Creepy as all hell, but brilliant.

Scarlet Spider #9 (writer: Chris Yost; artist: Khoi Pham)

Still carrying on the Clone Saga from almost 20 years ago, Scarlet Spider gets major points for sticking with it rather than the old standard of having the clone die/go away and live a normal life never to be heard from again.  Spider-Man clone Kaine is giving this whole hero-ing thing a try.  And when I say “giving it a try” that’s exactly what I mean.  He has no idea how to be a hero, he doesn’t particularly like it, he doesn’t like the other heroes he’s wound up working with in this arc, and he can’t see any sort of reward for it.  But he keeps trying.   He’s stoic and cynical where Spidey’s a chatty optimist, but they both share the drive to do good.  I love the direction they’ve taken with Kaine, and I’ll be adding this comic to my list of new favourites.

X-Men Legacy #273 (writer: Christos Gage; artist: Rafa Sandoval)

It was a kind of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, but during one of the AvX battles, Magik dragged Rogue into a portal and sent her away to an alien planet gripped by civil war.  If you’ve read the last couple of issues, the conclusion of this arc won’t come as any surprise to you.  Actually, if you’ve read any comics ever, you can pretty much figure out that she doesn’t just shrug and leave them to it.  She manages to make them see they’re not so different, and should work together for a brighter future, in a plot conclusion directly lifted from the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic episode ‘Over a Barrel’.  So, if this issue was predictable and unoriginal, why is it in my top picks list?  Because it’s so well-written that it doesn’t matter.  Because Rogue is so badass she takes time out of a war to go fight another war, and then goes right on back to her original war.  And also because I like ponies.

X-Treme X-Men #3 (writer: Greg Pak; artists: Stephen Segovia & Paco Diaz)

If you’re interested in the whole alternate universe thing but can find them a little hard to follow, X-Treme X-Men is here for you.  A group of familiar faces from unfamiliar dimensions team up with our Dazzler to kill all the evil Charles Xaviers.  It’s kind of a whistle-stop tour through all the dimensions the creators can come up with (this month: steampunk Utopia!) and it is SO MUCH FUN.  Highlights include Xavier’s head in a jar, a possibly gay Wolverine, and Dazzler singing a song in every issue.  If you like your comics to be gritty and down-to-earth, you should give this one a miss, but if you like stuff that can be truthfully described as “zany” then go buy it.  And then put Dazzler’s songs to music and stick them on YouTube, because I would totally watch that.

DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON

Uncanny X-Force #31 (writer: Rick Remender; artist: Phil Noto)

It hurts me to say this, but Uncanny X-Force isn’t doing so great at the minute.  I love it, I do, but they’ve taken seven issues deciding what to do with Evan, aka Genesis, aka Kid Apocalypse, and they still don’t have a clue.  Psylocke is pretty adamant they should let him live, Deadpool is pretty adamant they should let him die, and everyone else is kinda shuffling their feet and shrugging.  It’s times like this I wish I had the power to break the fourth wall in reverse, because I would stick my head in there and be like “What is WRONG with you?!  You know treating him like a shaken-up bottle of fizzy evil is just going to make him more likely to be evil, right?  You want him to be a good guy?  How about busting in to the bad guy’s lair, breaking him out, and telling him how worried you were?  Expressing some concern for the well-being of the child who’s been abducted by the Brotherhood?  Taking him HOME?!  JESUS, Logan, you run a SCHOOL!  You’re a $@!#.  You’re all $@!#s.  Except for Betsy.  Betsy’s cool.”

The Comic Strip Weekend, Liverpool 22nd – 23rd Sept

0

Our Friends at the 99th Garrison will be appearing at the Comic Strip Weekend on the 22nd and 23rd of September in Liverpool. It looks like it is going to be a brilliant couple of days, so if you live in the area, or can travel then please check it out; and if you see the Empire there… tell them Geek Pride sent you!

More about the weekend from Comicconventions.co.uk below:

The great thing about this event is that Liverpool rarely actually has any comic related events, despite having two big chain comic shops there. So even small events like this are really great for locals. And what is brilliant for comic fans? Well, small events like this mean free sketches, and our regular readers will know that we love our sketches.

The event takes place in the Liverpool spaceport, it’s just a click off the main city and is very easy to reach either via public transport or by car.

So anyway, you’re probably more interested in who will be there and what will be going on. As I mentioned, this is a fairly low profile event, which means they don’t have hundreds of guests, they have two! But, that being said in my ex
perience low key events tend to give you the chance to really pick the brains of the guests. These family orientated events give a vibe like no other and are really worth checking out if you can, keeping in mind NICE is on the same weekend.

The two guests:

Anthony Williams, an artist who has worked on a large list of things, everything from GhostBusters to Batman. He also worked on 2000AD, so those looking for something to remind them of the recent Judge Dredd film are in for a treat, as he also worked on the supporting character, Judge Anderson In “Exorcise Duty”. He’s also worked on a few Elseworld one shots, including “The Superman Monster”. Which was one of my favourite Superman stories.

Accompanying Anthony Williams, is Andy Lanning. These two guests frequently worked together and between them have a near endless portfolio. Lanning has worked on everything from The Sleeze Brothers (Which is his own work) to Wonder Woman. As well as writing, Lanning has inked and pencilled various works.

Both Anthony and Lanning will be providing advice and will be showcasing their work, including original prints. They’re encouraging people to bring portfolios along to show them. As I mentioned, they’re also offering limited free small sketches.

The Spaceport’s main objective is a fun, educational family day out which means they’re running a workshop throughout the weekend. “The Science of Superheroes” these are hosted by Matt Dickinson who a lecturer at UCLan (A Lancashire University). The workshops look at the scientific side of super heroes, such as what Spider-Man’s web would be made of, and how possible it would be to fuse metal to your skeleton, thinking of Wolverine. (Maybe I’ll ask them about getting metal coated skin?).

There’s also going to be some people in costumes, a small crafting area where people can craft their own masks and gadgets as well as a face painting area.

On top of this, they’re running a competition Anthony said:

“This weekend will really capture the imagination and bring Comic Strip favourites alive to both adults and children. We all have a superhero whether it was a family member, friend or TV character – someone we look up to or admire.

Tell us who that someone is for you and you could win tickets to the Comic Strip Festival and have an original illustration signed for you. Parents can enter for their kids, or can nominate a superhero of their own!”

Entries should be tweeted to @merseyferries including your name, hometown, and a little bit about your superhero. Nominations must be received by midday Thursday 20th September. Mersey Ferries will pick one winner, who will receive a family ticket and a signed original illustration by Anthony Williams.

Tickets are at standard Spaceport price, which start as low as £4.50, full details here book in advance

Walking Dead Offers Up New Season 3 Trailer and Pics

0

It is merely a month to go until the Season 3 premiere of The Walking Dead or, as I call it,  zombie apocalypse – how not to do it. I personally found Season 2 slow and less action packed then I would have liked and so I have my fingers crossed that Season 3 will ‘bring it’ as they say.

Courtesy of Yahoo the newly released shots include this seasons new characters, The Governor (played by David Morrissey) and Michonne (played by Danai Gurira).   The standard season 3 cast shot is there and what may be a very telling image of Rick and his son Carl, who clearly has a gun strapped to his leg.

The tagline “Fight the dead, fear the living” is heavily pushed in this sneak peak trailer. It sets up the prison and the crowds of rotting undead that stand in the survivors way, with a hearty glimpse of zombie bashing to keep you going for another month. However it seems the threat from the living is escalating this season. A theme that has been touched on, but not fully explored in previous seasons. Opening with Lori stating “Do whatever you gotta do…” it appears the reality of what it takes to survive is going to be played out and there may be more horror in what  man will do to man than in destroying the skulls of their undead loved ones.

Fingers crossed this season turns out to be as good as this trailer suggests. With some loose ends tied up in the last season, this next one will, hopefully, be a start of more interesting arcs that don’t have me screaming “WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?”
