It’s official! Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D picked up by ABC

0

Okay like any of us had any doubts. The return of Agent Coulson written by Joss Whedon, all hail Whedon, how could they not pick that up, but to hear it become officially official just adds to my already brimming barrel of excitement. But Marvel have also offered this squee inducing official cast photo, look at Phil, getting his agent on.

And if that wasn’t enough for our US readers there will be an exclusive first look at “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,”  during the “Once Upon A Time” season finale this coming Sunday, 12th May 8:00p.m. ET/PT on ABC. I recommend geeks of other countries, like myself,  maybe should check out youtube at some point after this time. With Marvel promising more information, I shall endeavour to bring you the news as quickly as I possibly can.

[box_light]Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson’s team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) expert pilot and martial artist, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker); brilliant engineer and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet)[/box_light]

Genuine Piece Of Gaming History – Now Available On Steam

0

There are only a few games that I would classify as Great. Deus Ex, Half Life and Thief 2 all fall under this mighty umbrella, and even flawed diamonds like Bioshock and Dishonoured still have the whiff of Greatness about them. All these games, and pretty mush any FPS where you do more than “frag” a “noob”, have a direct common ancestor in 1999’s System Shock 2.

Shoot robots! Store items!

Ground-breaking when it was released, SS2 married First Person action, a solid RPG system and once of the most nail-biting Survival Horror experiences before or since. Lucky for us then that it’s now available for the PC from Steam and on sale no less for the paltry sum of £4.89. That’s less than a McDonalds! Do yourself a favour, skip the Big Mac, fries and a large coke and buy this instead. The parts of your brain that detect awesomeness and your congealed arteries will thank you.

Guardians of the Galaxy #2

0

Peter Quill and the rest of the Guardians fight off the invasion of Earth by the Badoon with the help of Iron Man. Whilst a flashback to a clandestine meeting of Peter’s father, the King of Spartax, and the ambassadors of the galactic empires sheds light on the situation.

It’s only the second issue and already Bendis has the team up to their necks in action.

It’s quite a change to see London being targeted rather than the usual New York and the numerous images of the Houses of Parliament or Big Ben in the background as the carnage unfolds really make a difference.

The art from Steve McNiven and Sara Pichelli makes the action pop in this issue, there’s a lot of stuff going on as the Guardians split up to take on a ship each. There’s some great panels of each characters actions as they set out to scuttle the Badoon ships with Gamora and Drax being the highlights.

Iron Man not a fan of Captain Britain.

753e5b561dcbd0c4578c90a779ed2116

The Machiavellian plotting of Peter’s father makes for a good contrast to the action elsewhere and breaks things up before there’s any danger of fatigue setting in.

What this series really suffers from though is not establishing these characters at all, there’s no mention of why Gamora is ‘the most dangerous woman in the universe’ or who Drax, Rocket or Groot are, as though it’s a given you’ll already know these characters if you’re picking it up so there’s no need to waste time explaining who they are.

This isn’t a good way to get new readers and because of it Iron Man seems to be lynch pin of the issue purely due to being the only character new readers will recognise.

 Gamora takes care of business.

This lack of establishing characters is even more true of Groot, who was reduced to a splinter in the first issue with Rocket fretting this issue over whether his friend will grow back.

Having Quill trying to contact Earth’s heroes like The Avengers and Fantastic Four as though they’re incapable of dealing with anything on their own, makes the Guardians or more to the point, Peter Quill, look like a light weight too. There’s some great action and some interesting scheming going on but it doesn’t really mean a great deal without knowing who these characters are.

Watch Dogs Is Draining All My Saliva

When I watched the Playstation 4 announcement in February, I was drooling over Watch Dogs from the get-go. Now I’m not able to control the drool any longer, and I’m dehydrated to the point of looking like the bad guy at the end of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade after he’s drank from the wrong cup.

Watch Dogs Banner

Joystiq have reported a couple of details that are quickly making sure that I’ll be penniless come Christmas as I’ll NEED a PS4, and NEED this game.

Firstly, the online multiplayer will have an element of voyeurism and invasion of privacy from player to player. If you remember in the demonstration in February the game’s protagonist was being watched by someone who’d hacked into security cameras (before the voyeur themselves were hacked)… this will be an active mechanic. Not only that, but being able to hack other players’ mobile devices to plant a virus will be another way to hamper their progress.

Senior Producer at Ubisoft Montreal Dominic Guay said “We are not making any compromises in terms of dynamism or interactivity”. Speaking at a press event in San Francisco earlier this week, Guay continued by saying they want to be “breaching the wall in action-adventure between single and multiplayer” , citing that Watch Dogs’ multiplayer mode will be an almost seamless experience. However he reassured everyone that the game can be played “completely offline” should you wish to.

Hacking is a small part of the game, but Ubisoft Montreal are going that step further in actually consulting an internet security firm for feedback on what is feasible and what isn’t. They’ve been working with Kaspersky Lab with this in mind, all with a view to make the hacking experience that much more believable instead of the super-speed Hollywood hacking where someone types on a computer for 10 seconds before droning “I’m in…”.

Although only a small part of the game, Ubisoft want hacking authenticity
Although only a small part of the game, Ubisoft want hacking authenticity

“They have really hardcore experts there on hacking.” Guay said, “We send them some of our designs and we ask them feedback on it, and it’s interesting to see what gets back. Sometimes they say, ‘Yeah, that’s possible, but change that word,’ or, ‘That’s not the way it works.'”

Although hacking isn’t always necessary, Ubisoft have always been very thorough in their game design. “It’s not about the minigame that will let me open the door, it’s the fact that I’m making a plan. I’m making a plan of how I’m going to chain hacking, shooting, traveling the city and driving to achieve an objective.” said Guay.

Another interesting bit of info is that there will be a companion application for mobile devices that will be released at the same time. The app has been in development for about a year or so already, and will allow it’s users to play a version of Watch Dogs, as well as interact with console players.

Now you just need to wear a baseball cap and a trenchcoat, and you’ll feel invincible as you go about your daily business… that is until your mum rings asking you to pick up some milk.

Road Rash Successor Hits Kickstarter Target

A while back, I commented on Twitter that if any game deserves a modern day revamp or reboot, it’d be Road Rash… and a little while after making the comment, I heard that my wish had come true and a studio called DarkSeas Games were working on the project, dubbed Road Redemption. Now I’m not saying I had anything to do with that, but… you’re welcome. 😉

Road Redemption

Anyway, it seems the project in question hit Kickstarter last month, and as of this morning has hit it’s $160,000 target with 48 hours to spare! This means we’ll once again be able to mash our friend’s heads in with pipes and chains while riding at 120mph on PC, Mac, Linux, and Wii U in August 2014.

The “spiritual successor” to Road Rash even has the blessing of co-creator Dan Geisler, who said “I want to play that! Get funded and kick ass!”

Road Redemption

So if you want to get in on the ground floor and bag yourself a DRM-free version of the game, you need to get onto the game’s Kickstarter page and pledge $15 or more within the next 2 days.

Should the project hit it’s stretch goal, DarkSeas are looking to develop an XBLA version, and incorporate Oculus Rift support into the game, and judging by the tech demo they’ve shown that’d be amazing!

Disney’s First Animated Marvel Movie: Big Hero 6

Disney have announced the first Marvel property to be made into a CG animated movie, and they’re going down the superteam route again a-la The Avengers, by optioning Steven T. Seagle and Duncan Rouleau‘s Big Hero 6.

Big Hero 6 Comicbook

If I’m completely honest, I’ve not heard of Big Hero 6 before today… however looking at the subject material I think I may just have to investigate further before the movie comes out. So, if you’re as clueless as I was, I’ll give you a little back story.

Big Hero 6 is a superteam that acts at the behest of the Japanese government, who were formed by the Giri – a top-secret conglomerate of politicians and business entities. Lead by none other than The Wolverine bad guy Silver Samurai, the team consists of a strange combination of reluctant heroes and anti-heroes with a wide variety of abilities.

Big Hero 6 MembersThere’s child genius Hiro Takachiho and his synthetic bodyguard Baymax, Secret agent Honey Lemon who uses a nanotech “Power Purse” where she can access any object, GoGo Tomago who can transform her body into a flaming force blast and Sunfire – a mutant with the ability to superheat matter into plasma. There are other characters that help to comprise the team, but they often replace people that leave for various reasons.

They also have a Giri representative working as a liaison between the team and the government called Mr. Oshima – he’s basically this team’s Nick Fury.

So with this interesting set of characters, and some of the suitably Japanese storylines (characters brought into being by other team members, and worshipping them as Gods etc), you can see why Disney have gone for the CG animation route. Disney have said the movie will focus on the 13-year old Hiro and bodyguard Baymax as they join the team in the high-tech city of “San Fransokyo”

Disney have released a concept of the bridge going into San Fransokyo, and a concept video of how San Fransokyo will look:

Big Hero 6 - Bridge to San Fransokyo

Don Hall has been signed to direct the feature, and as he was one of the writers responsible for The Emporer’s New Groove, I have no problem with that – I love that movie! Noooo TOUCHY!

Hall spoke to the LA Times about his choice to direct:

“I was looking for something on the obscure side, something that would mesh well with what we do. The idea of a kid and a robot story with a strong brother element, it’s very Disney.

“Marvel properties take place in the real world. We were looking for something to do where we could make our own world — bring in the Japanese influences,  have recognizable landmarks mashed up with a Japanese aesthetic.”

At present there’s no information on casting for Big Hero 6, but the movie is set for release in 2014.

Thomas Was Alone Review – 7 GPPs

Thomas Was Alone is an indie, puzzle-based platformer, set in a computer program gone awry and  featuring AI  in the form of coloured blocks, which you need to guide to a goal; the first being Thomas, a red rectangle, who is indeed alone; at least to start with anyway. As the game progresses, more and more characters are introduced, with different sizes and shapes (all quadrilateral), strengths and weaknesses, which need to be guided (the player can switch between them all) to their individual goals and need to use each other to do so. It’s kind of like a message for society; we need to all work together in order to overcome any obstacles, which come our way…maybe I’m looking in to it a bit too deeply though.

TWA1

It’s quite unusual to play a character, which is just a featureless, coloured block, but the story, narrated by writer/comedian, Danny Wallace, does the job of giving them human personalities and names. So while you’re jumping around, trying to work out how to get to the goal, Danny tells you of their inner-thoughts and dreams, which include falling in love, ambitions to be a super hero and accepting the fact that they will never get to meet Nathan Fillion (these characters may have only just come to be in existence but somehow they found time to watch Firefly apparently). These little snippets of information are very entertaining and make the experience much more enjoyable for it.

Wallace’s role as Narrator won the “Performance” category at the 9th British Academy  Video Games Awards, while the game itself was nominated in the “Story” and “music” categories. This was very well deserved and although it appears that he didn’t actually write the narrative, it does sound like the sort of thing he’d write; making  trivial and mundane things sound exciting and adventurous, very much like his column in Shortlist, so he was definitely the right man for the job.

It’s quite a strange concept; you, a human being, thinking for and controlling AI, instead of them doing those thing for themselves(as that’s the point of them, right?), while they take on human-like personas. I found this a pretty interesting idea…I’m doing it again, aren’t I?

There are 100 stages to get through, many of which are ingeniously designed; my favourite ones being a series of puzzles, which involve two blocks, one using gravity and one with anti-gravity, each needing to get to the opposite side of the screen, requiring them to coordinate with each other. Some stages contain hazards and a few have time restrictions so your characters can die but they just respawn at the nearest checkpoint, so it’s never too frustrating. The gameplay is always kept fresh as new shapes with new abilities are introduced and it never stops being fun to play.

TWA2

The downside is, it rarely offers much in the way of challenge and while there are 100 stages, each can only take between 30 seconds and a few minutes to beat so it only takes a few hours to finish the game. Also, there isn’t a steady difficulty curve as some stages can be much easier than the one before; the final one, which should be the hardest to complete, is far too easy as some of the early puzzles take much more time to work out. The only tricky thing about this stage is barley being able to see a button to push in order to complete the game. The most challenging ones are those, which have a time limit, some have a set of spikes following you and others have a rising water level; these can take quite a few attempts to survive the hazards but most of the game is a breeze.

TWA3

There isn’t a lot of incentive to replay a stage; each one has a leader-board but only for the 5 quickest players in the world and doesn’t show where you rank or your time, unless you are also in the top 5, or how you fared against your friends. In fact, there isn’t a timer during gameplay so you can’t see how you’re doing and your record time (or best online player’s) isn’t displayed and no star rating is featured, so you can’t tell what you’re aiming towards if you want to beat hi-scores. Also, some stages can be beaten faster than the narrative runs for, so if you want to hear it, you need to sacrifice a good completion time. I really think the developer has missed a trick there.

For players, who are thirsty for more, there’s is a DLC pack called  Benjamin’s Flight, featuring a green square (I think you can guess what its name is) with a jet pack, which adds an additional 20 stages to the game.

As you can see from the screenshots, a simplistic graphical style is used. However, shadow and mist effects make it look pretty cool. Also the excellent ambient-style soundtrack, with a combination of bleeps and chimes, helps it give a bit of atmosphere, although can sound quite repetitive as most tracks can be very similar to the last.

TWA5

The game has been available on PC and Mac for a while but has just seen a PS3 and  PS Vita release; for a bargain price of £6/$10 you get both versions or if you’re a PS Plus subscriber you can get them for free until May 22nd. It also has a cloud sync feature, which means that when you play on one version, selecting this option will track your progress on the other version, meaning you can play it on the PS3 at home and if you need to go out, you can continue your game on the Vita. How cool is that? The game won’t last long enough for you to incorporate this into a lifestyle mind.

TWA4

 Conclusion

To my disappointment, there isn’t a character called Phil but if there was, his story would go something like this…”Phil had reached the final goal. He thought that he would have a sense of great accomplishment but actually it was a breeze and over a little too quickly for his liking. Was this because he was so talented? Was he better than others? Well, not the top 5 in the world anyway. Would he return? Probably not. He had great fun though and the time had whizzed by; looking at his watch he noticed at it was past 2am and he had work in the morning, so he rushed to bed and dreamed of maybe getting the DLC. The end.”

John Carpenter “Would Love To Make Dead Space”

Legendary horror director John Carpenter has expressed an interest in adapting Electronic Arts‘ Dead Space for the big screen, describing it as “ready-made”.

John Carpenter - Dead Space

Probably one of the better choices to direct such a project, Carpenter seems really enthusiastic about the idea. The Thing alone would be an excellent example of why he’d be the prime choice – he has some of the best creature and gore effects in the business, even 21 years after his cult classic’s release.

[pullquote_right]I would love to make Dead Space, I’ll tell you that right now. That one is ready-made.”[/pullquote_right]Of course such an iconic director has a wealth of experience to pull from – lets not forget Escape From New York, The Fog and Halloween… the man knows horror and suspense better than most. However when asked about Dead Space, he compared it to a colleague’s work; “The first game was more – I guess it was like Alien – but not quite.”

When Dead Space was released, it was EA’s first foray into the survival horror genre, intended to compete with Capcom‘s Resident Evil series. The initial game succeeded, quickly establishing itself as a classic and spawning a sequel in 2011. Unfortunately as the series progressed, it became less about horror and more about action.

Dead Space

“I maintain that Dead Space would just make a great movie because you have these people coming onto an abandoned, shut-down space ship and they have to start it up and something’s on board. It’s just great stuff.” said Carpenter. “I would love to make Dead Space, I’ll tell you that right now. That one is ready-made.”

Now in my opinion, it wouldn’t take much to make the jump to a feature movie – there have already been a couple of animated features in the form of Dead Space: Downfall (a prequel to the first game) and Dead Space: Aftermath (a sequel intended to bridge the storyline to the second game). Both animated movies are pretty average, though the first is generally held in higher regard.

Whether EA will choose to take him up on his offer remains to be seen, but if anyone can do it, he can.
