Teleglitch: PC Review

Teleglitch01

Before I go onto the review (and this maybe giving my feelings away about the game in some small way) pre-order it before it’s too late! The ‘Die More Edition’ comes out on full release, July 24th or if you want to be uber flash, you can pre order the limited edition version, where in you get the soundtrack and 8 exclusive weapons / utilities. Personally I would order the latter because you will need everything you can get to survive!

If you’re one of these who need AAA video game graphics and can’t remember the simpler time of gaming when it was focused more on the game-play, and not on the explosions, then this game and subsequent review might not be for you. It’s a top down survival horror game where you play a nameless grunt working for a company who are creating a matter transporter…..because as we all know, they ALWAYS work without a hitch. Anyway trouble inevitably ensues and you lock yourself away in your room hoping for a rescue which doesn’t come. Your only option? Get to the master control unit and send yourself back to earth.

The start reminded me of the film ‘Alien’, no speech, just the sound of text flitting across the screen, daunting music and a singular, lonely planet spinning ominously in the distance. It comes with a tutorial thankfully, which explains to you how to survive slightly longer than you would without going through it. Unfortunately for me it didn’t give me much hope as it told me my shooting was merely ‘adequate’. This did not bode well, especially if I took into consideration the fact I could only see what my character could. As soon as I turned a corner that area of the screen turned black and any sort of creature could be lurking there.

Teleglitch-ss01

The developers have been very clever with how they created this game, starting with the use of minimalist sound, the far off hum of machinery interspersed occasionally with gravelly skittering to put the player on edge. This, coupled with randomly generated maps, enemies and equipment at the start of a new level not only creates a good environment for the player but a sense of dread (How many creatures are out there? What will they give me to defend myself? Please god not just a knife!).

The game has a view rotate which takes some time getting used to but if you feel you can’t wait, or simply don’t like it there is the option to switch it off in the menu. Alongside this option there is a handy stats screen to let you know how many times you’ve died (thoughtful) and how badly you handle your gun (18.2% accuracy). There’s a nice monster section in there too which updates after you kill a new one, so far I’ve only found a form of mutant and a zombie with a nice blurb piece on each. What worries me is the part the developers left in about Armor…..I’m not sure how my knife will fare against armor.

My first mission I was given a pistol, with (as it turned out) way too little ammo and only two explosives, but don’t worry – I found an empty can! Somehow I managed to work my way through to a teleport room where it gave me two choices: I could either go to an abandoned plankton farm or a military biology bunker, I never take the safe option and I hope when you consider what game to purchase next, neither will you. This game doesn’t have the graphical power of a big developer, but it more than makes up for it with it’s game-play and atmosphere.

For those who didn’t know, our good friends at Sneaky Zebra have recently cast off the shackles of Machinima and are now basking in the warm embrace of ‘The Nerdist’. It was therefore unsurprising to hear that they were jetting off Stateside to be a part of the Nerdist panel at SDCC (well jel) and to inject some good old British nous and film making creativity  to the proceedings.

Below is their first instalment but look forward to a lot more, including potential collaborations with some well known youtubers.

Good news everyone! It seems that the bastion of many of our childhoods, Knightmare, will be returning in August for a one-off Youtube special!

As reported here by Digital Spy, a Press Release went out today confirming the details:
In a one-off special, ’80s retro TV show Knightmare will screen a brand new episode. It will be produced by the original creator Tim Child.

The episode will feature Isy Suttie and Harry Potter star Jessie Cave, and it will be filmed in the original Norwich studio.

The episode will appear as part of Youtube’s upcoming ‘Geek Week’, which will be from August 4th – August 10th. I doubt I’ll be alone in saying I’m looking forward to a Nostalgiasm.

Left. Left. Left. STOP!

What the Frak is going to happen in 77 days?

0

77

An educational YouTube site goes rogue and starts an ominous and mysterious countdown.

Sounds like the plot device for a high-tech thriller, but this is happening now.

Two weeks ago, Pronunciation Book, a channel that gives audio examples of how to pronounce certain words, started to get a little weird.

The video for “77” seemed innocuous enough, the phrase “Something is going to happen in 77 days” certainly included the correct pronunciation even if it was framed rather bizarrely.  The videos that have followed over the course of the last fortnight, however, ratcheted up the creepy.

The audio message so far looks like this:

77: “Something is going to happen in 77 days.”

76: “I’ve been trying to tell you something for 1,183 days.”

75: “I’m awake now. Things are clearing up. I’m not saying the words anymore.”

74: “I’ve got a minute, let me tell you what I think is going on.”

73: “Tension between the districts has spiked in the last few months.”

72: “You can see it in the markets. Everyone’s ready for a storm.”

71: “They’re singing a new song in the streets of the zone.”

70: “I have plenty of information to keep me company.”

69: “No one is ready. He watches the market.”

68: “I’m not talking about a disaster, I’m talking about a love triangle.”

67: “We fell into the jungle for a summer of dollar/duller crime.”

66: “We were young heroes, gorgeous liars.”

65: “Turn off the lights and drink a cold glass of water.”

64: “No one is singing, everyday’s the same.”

63: “We should have listened to chief.”

 (Courtesy of http://intothedeep77.blogspot.co.uk)

Each new entry ends with the line “Something is going to happen in X days”

But what? Well, The Daily Dot believe they have uncovered the mystery and claim that it points to a reboot of Battlestar Galactica.  Their article here examines older videos in the series and how they relate to the colonists time on New Caprica, suggesting that any new series might focus on the time when the colonists were settled on under Cylon occupation.

This would be all kinds of awesome as far as I’m concerned. I think that setting has plenty of potential for providing solid drama, either as a TV Film or mini-series, and I would love to see it explored.

This piqued my interest, and so I delved head long into the 77 Days Research Document. It is an incredibly well put together document that delves into the mysteries of the videos, to an extent that I can only be amazed by and applaud.  After reading all 46 pages and side notes, and after showering to scrub the conspiracy theories out of my pores, I’m not quite so convinced that this is a BSG thing.  There are videos in the Pronunciation Book series from last year that tell a narrative, hidden within their advertised lessons; these are listed in the Google document and have little relevancy to BSG.

My best guess is that this is an elaborate and well planned ARG for a big upcoming media release; but exactly what that might be is unknown at the moment.

The countdown runs out on September 24th 2013.  I guess we’ll find out then.

The Extinction Parade #1 – 7 GPPs

0

A solitary figure stands on a city rooftop looking down on a swarm of the living dead whilst the city burns. Flashback to Kuala Lumpur and from the balcony of their appartment looking upon a fireworks dislay set against the Petronas Towers, Laila, a friend and visitor Anson are discussing another breakout of subdead and decide to have a closer look at what’s unfolding nearby.

The Extinction Parade from Max Brooks writer of the critically acclaimed World War Z might feature the living dead but this is an entirely different story about a different war.

The introductory page sets up an initial tease of carnage, anarchy and zombies swarming the streets whilst an unknown figure looks on from the safety of an ornate rooftop. This unknown figure is the narrator of The Extinction Parade.

There are plenty of ideas to be found here and the narration ,told in flashback, is rife with details pertaining to the world that this story is set in. The narrator and her friends are vampires who refer to the living dead as ‘subdead’ and the humans as ‘solbreeders’, it’s quickly established that outbreaks of subdead are nothing new but lately they were becoming more frequent.

The three eras of vampires.
The three eras of vampires.

Brooks doesn’t take long in establishing his vampires who are attractive, possessing of superior strength and the ability of flight.

One of the books biggest strength’s is also it’s biggest weakness and that is a lot of the story here is told via narrative dialogue boxes. These outnumber speech bubbles of character dialogue by a considerable amount, this isn’t neccesarily a bad thing but seems to speak to having a writer more accustomed to writing novels than comics.

The story jumps around chronologically with its opening page segueing into a flashback and a further flashback before leading to events which seemingly link back to that opening image. Due to the narrative style of the story though this isn’t as confusing or fractured as it may have been with a more traditional speech bubble approach to the story.

Telling a story from a vampires perspective also gives the narrative a different view to the norm, with the vampires looking at the solbreeders and the subdead with equal contempt not sure which is more stupid. There’s a neat example of the perception of time completely distorting for the immortals as the narrator remarks ‘so much jungle had vanished, in what seemed the blink of an eye, replaced by motorways, tract housing, and mile after mile of palm oil plantations’.

It's feeding time.
It’s feeding time.

One half page rather brilliantly takes in Hollywood’s take on the ‘classic’ vampire before moving on to Interview with a vampire and finishing off with Twilight all under the guise of explaining how attraction works for vampires.

There’s plenty of potential in this story and that opening page is full of intrigue, it’s also refreshing to have a story without a ‘hero’ . A flashback scene depicting the unnamed narrator and Laila taking full advantage of the Malayan Emergency in brutal fashion demonstrates both some research on Brooks’ part and just how far away from ‘hero’ the narrator is.

Raulo Caceres art will amaze or appall depending on your taste. The level of detail in the several double page depictions of the living dead shambling through city streets is mind boggling and is up there with the likes of Juan Jose Ryp. One double page features an appartment building aflame with panicked residents, smashed cars and a myriad of zombies all of which look different. With some merely shambling through the carnage, whilst others gorge on unfortunate victims, while severed limbs and blood litter the floor.

One page featuring the narrator looking on depicts a survivor desperately trying to escape only to be overwhelmed and torn apart in bloody fashion, with his throat torn out and the undead chewing on his glistening intestines amidst the backdrop of crashed cars.

Constantine #1 – 4 GPPs

0

Occultist John Constantine sets out to track down a legendary artifact with dark magical propertiesConstantine_Vol_1_1_Variant and gets more than he was expecting in this the first issue of his new on-going series set in the DC universe.

This younger version has been a part of this universe for quite some time now with John Constantine being one of the core members of Justice League Dark, Constantine has also made appearances in several other titles too.

Ray Fawkes and Jeff Lemire writer of the critically acclaimed Animal Man and the under appreciated Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E have been given the uneviable task of writing Constantine and from first impressions it seems like they’ve stumbled badly.

It’d be hard to not mention Hellblazer whilst talking about Constantine, after all Hellblazer was John Constantine’s home for over 20 years and he became one of the most believable characters DC has ever had thanks to deft characterisation over the years.

There’s going to be several different types of potential reader for this title, Hellblazer fans picking it up to see what it’s like, those familiar with Constantine through Justice League Dark and other titles in the DC52 and those that don’t know the character at all and are just picking it up to try it out. The latter will be smallest at a guess.

It would be impossible for Constantine#1 to please all these potential readers but crucially this inaugural adventure for the nicotine stained occultist will probably fail to please any of them.

Constantine makes his way home.
Constantine makes his way home.

The introduction to Constantine shows him leaving some subterranean club somewhere in New York before shortly encountering someone named Chris who suffers from some sort of mystical divination affliction. Before long the scene shifts to John’s appartment which is festooned with occult trinkets, totems, scrolls, books and various other items which defy description and he has several dogs because ‘animals screw with divination magic’,it’s also above a pet shop .

A running narrative of John’s thoughts acts as a framing device stating that there are people that bend and twist the rules of the universe to their own devices ‘There are no rules. That’s magic. And that makes people like me very, very dangerous’

Unfortunately these attempts at world building are hampered by a story which is unengaging and flawed and in a big hurry to get somewhere.

In the space of a few pages the story jumps from New York to Norway via plane ride and the scene shifts to the chapel of an ice hotel. It’s here where the fate of Chris is made out to be a major event and also made as indicative of Constantine’s character as Sargon the Sorceress says ‘you do live up to your reputation Constantine’.

Sargon’s statement doesn’t have any real weight though since it’s never established who Chris is to Constantine, it’s never inferred whether he’s just a random aquaintance or a friend so any power this was supposed to wield vanishes. Aside from establishing that John isn’t your typical ‘hero’, which most readers will already know this doesn’t really achieve anything and things are further obfuscated when at the conclusion somehow a fleet of yellow taxi’s have appeared outside the hotel.

Constantine arrives in Norway.
Constantine goes treasure hunting in Norway.

John’s thoughts refering to magic are the only indicator to anything actually happening to explain the presence of several cars where there was only one previously, this is jarring and sloppy from a writing point of view and makes John seem more like Mysterio than the occultist he is purported to be by the earlier events of the story.

Another problem is Renato Guedes art which seems to be distinctly hit and miss, the first few pages are good with a great atmospheric image of Constantine walking through New York in the early hours and his apartment has some great detail going on . At other times Constantine looks flat out malevolently evil and also looks uncannily like Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

A first issue is never easy to get right, with characters to introduce, a world to introduce and all whilst having an engrossing story which hooks the reader. The problem here is it seems to be written for the ADHD crowd, there’s no time to actually build any atmosphere to any of the places Constantine visits or add any sense of weight to anything that happens and the ease with which John finds the first piece of the Compass makes him seem like Dr Manhattan.

It seems that Fawkes and Lemire are moving away from Hellblazer’s territory of urban horror and are wanting to set up Constantine as a sort of edgy Doctor Strange, that cover looks exactly like a Doctor Strange cover, but this is not a good start to things. Unfeasibly attired women and splash pages just seem wrong in a John Constantine comic.

The pair may have a longer term plan for the story but whether anyone will be reading is the question.

Clive Barker’s Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut heading for Blu-ray

Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut (the different cut of Clive Barker’s film, based on his novel Cabal) which has been showing at various film festivalstumbaabierta_nightbreed_cabal_cut_razas_de_noche is now set for a release on Blu-ray from Scream Factory.

Clive Barker had this to say via Facebook:
What I can tell you is that we at Seraphim have been invited to work with Scream Factory to make this release the best possible event. It’s been a long journey to bring Nightbreed to this moment, and I want to make sure that the release is the best document of the movie and its adventures. I will obviously be updating you through facebook on all the developments as they come through to me from Scream Factory, but as it stands I think the Tribes of the Moon should rejoice. This is a triumph for all of your voices, your support and your love. Clive.
