MancsterCon 2013 – Local talent wins again!

This weekend I was lucky enough to be invited along to MancsterCon. A new convention in its very first year of opening, with a focus on local artists and talent. MancsterCon was hosted in Madlab – a kooky little building in the heart of the Northern Quarter in Manchester. Madlab holds various seminars, meetings and tutorials (including Taxidermy Lessons and a Geek Girls Tea Party, awesome!) throughout the year.

As I arrived a talk was in full swing. Hosted by Pauline Sometimes and focusing on Gender Stereotyping in Comic Books, Pauline concentrated on two main themes; ‘Brokeback Syndrome’ which concentrates on the impossible contortions that female characters often find themselves forced into to create provocative and over sexualised imagery and ‘Women in Refrigerators’ which is a term used to discuss the disturbing victimisation of female characters and the extreme violence they seem to suffer all too frequently. Once the talk had finished there was a highly passionate question and answer session. I do love a healthy debate.

After a short break to recuperate we all gathered round for a screening of local animator Gareth Crook’s work. Watch them here, in this order:

Henry and the Worm from GraphicQuarter :: Gareth Crook on Vimeo.

George and the Worm from GraphicQuarter :: Gareth Crook on Vimeo.

I don’t know about you but I ruddy love them!

This was followed by another break where we got to eat yummy sparkly cakes, before everyone settled down to a cosplay drawing competition.

The winner Chris, who created this out of chalk on brown paper was thrilled to be presented with the title.

Chris also has a comic which you can find out more about here: http://www.lifeinourgalaxy.com/

After this I took a wander round the stalls and got chatting to all the incredibly talented artists that MancsterCon had attracted to their talent village.

This last trader particularly interested me. He (Mathew J Sullivan) is currently working with Man Met and various schools around Manchester to use comics as a stepping stone for students who struggle with their creative writing. The idea is that people who are finding it difficult to write by using the accepted methods can storyboard by using a comic style format before turning it into an essay which can then be submitted as coursework. The storyboard/comic above was created by a year 9 student. You can learn more about this here and here.

Of course, no convention would be complete without some kick ass cosplays:

As the day wound to a close we all got the chance to kick back and relax and enjoy one last film. Sita Sings the Blues was a perfect end to a lovely day. I’ll definitely be coming back next year.

Big day for spies! More Cross and more Hunt!

Jeremy Renner has been on a bit of a spy kick lately. In the past, with “28 Weeks Later” and “The Hurt Locker”, he’s shown capability with military roles, but since his cameo as Hawkeye in “Thor”, he’s been doing a run of spies. Yes, I count Hawkeye as a spy, because that’s what the movie version is. “Thor”, “The Bourne Legacy”, “The Avengers”, and “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” have all been blockbuster spy movies, and we know for certain that one of them’s getting a sequel. No, I’m not talking about “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, but actually a sequel to “The Bourne Legacy”.

Part of a photoshoot that Renner did with Empire magazine when he was cast for “The Bourne Legacy”.

The fourth installment of the long-running Bourne series took it’s title from the first book following the death of iconic thriller novelist Robert Ludlum, but like the first three that’s essentially where the similarities end. Aaron Cross was never in the books, the CIA played an extremely small role in the books, and they deal with Bourne undercover as a professor. That said, there’s really no telling how it could pan out, besides taking the old Hammer approach- take a title, send it down to the writer’s, and have them make a story out of it. Today, movieroomreviews.com posted that Universal has greenlight a fifth installment in the Bourne series, acting as a sequel to Legacy, starring the team-up of Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz, but no Damon. Here’s why: In the past, Matt Damon has said that he would love to come back to the series so that he could reprise his role as Jason Bourne, but last October he stated that the direction taken by Legacy changed it so much that he wouldn’t reprise the role unless director Paul Greengrass was in the chair. Essentially, he’s putting the series in Renner’s hands.

As a longtime fan of the series, I’m excited to see how this pans out, but as a film reporter I’m skeptical. End of the day, it’s going to be interesting. Now, I also said there’d be more Hunt, and I’m not kidding. Tom Cruise just posted this to his facebook and twitter feed.

399294_10150338294149980_1913587188_n

Alongside it was the caption “MISSION ACCEPTED! It’s OFFICIAL! @ChrisMcquarrie is the director of ‪#‎MissionImpossible‬5! ‪#‎TeamTC‬” Now, this comes as a bit of a shock to me. Normally, there’s a two to four year gap between MI movies, but when you consider how busy Cruise has been lately, what with his recent divorce, followed by losing custody of his daughter, there’s not a whole lot else for him besides work. Will this have Pegg and Renner again? What about Rhys-Meyers and Rhames, will we see more of them? Only time will tell, but I’m just thrilled that we get announcements of America’s two biggest spy series’ in one day, especially when one of them involves the no-name director behind “Jack Reacher”. Apparently Tom trusts him, and he’s willing to do it, so let’s see how the situation develops.

Stay classy.

Red 2 – 7 GPPs

When you’ve served your country as long as Frank has, you’ve seen it all… and when you get to your twilight years, you just want to settle down with a nice girl and bask in domestic bliss. Unfortunately for Frank, no-one else seems to want him to enjoy retirement – including his significant other. To quote his best buddy, Marvin: “But you haven’t killed anyone in months!”

Red 2 has landed, a follow-up to the 2010 hit based on the comicbook of the same name – bringing bigger stunts, new characters, returning favourites and some well-timed humour… but is it trying too hard? Read on to find out.

Red 2 Header

The general synopsis for Red 2 centers around Frank (Bruce Willis) and Sarah’s (Mary-Louise Parker) relationship, and Frank’s refusal to allow Sarah into his former life. Unfortunately for Frank, Marvin (John Malkovich) and a whole host of bad guys are forcing the situation upon him where he has no choice but to involve her. Various government authorities are after Frank and Marvin for their involvement in a weapons project called “Nightshade” – and as a result they have a price on their heads.

This lends for some amusing quips as along with the US authorities – represented pretty well by Minority Report‘s Neal McDonough, and the rather badass Byung-hun Lee (G.I Joe) – Frank’s old friend Victoria (Helen Mirren) has been instructed by MI5 to kill them both too.

Red 2
The obligatory walk away from explosion shot

In a race against time, Frank, Sarah and Marvin rush around the US, Russia and the UK on their trek to locate Nightshade, all while avoiding the contracted killers and swathes of grunts with semi-automatic weapons, or dispatching them in suitably silly ways.

Although relatively straightforward with few twists, the plot is well constructed with few holes and inconsistencies. The couple dynamic between Frank and Sarah is exploited well, with Marvin offering some idiotic-sounding, yet solid relationship advice; “If there’s one thing I know, it’s women and covert operations.”

The quick-witted dialogue is persistent throughout the film, and this is a welcome return – I loved the script in the first film, and there’s some great laugh-out-loud moments and one-liners uttered… Malcovich’s character steals nearly all of these, but I didn’t care because his timing and line-delivery is impeccable.

Some characters are a little dire – Catherine Zeta-Jones‘ “Russian” agent (her accent leaves a lot to be desired) and former flame of Frank’s seems solely placed in the movie as an antagonist for Frank & Sarah’s relationship, with little other reason for her to be around. When Anthony Hopkins‘ character makes his appearance, he’s very aloof, but it just seems a little forced. Hopkins is much more suited to the cold and calculating role rather than the mentally-unhinged extrovert, and unfortunately this comes across too much – even in the trailer with the “You’ve gotta be kidding me… put ’em up!”… it just made me put my head in my hands. You can do better, Sir.

Lee kicks ass as expert assassin Han Cho Bai
Lee kicks ass as expert assassin Han Cho Bai

The action in the movie however is stellar – with some great chase scenes in some very nice cars around France, and some awesome martial arts choreography involving Byung-hun Lee that is reminiscent of Jackie Chan – he’s handcuffed to a freezer by Willis, and promptly rips the door off and beats the crap out of about 15 police officers before strolling out of the convenience store.

When it comes down to cinematography the film makes good use of sweeping cameras and slow motion, and thankfully it’s not done to death. One of the things I really didn’t like is that when there’s a drastic scene change, the image freezes and is “drawn” in Cully Hamner‘s  comicbook style, followed by a sweeping movement to the next scene – to me this was just screaming “LOOK AT ME! I’M A COMICBOOK MOVIE! LOVE MEEEEEE!”.

It made me think of the utterly retarded House of the Dead movie directed by that idiot Uwe Bol. (Interspersed with actual videogame footage – no, he’ll never live that shit down). It works for the more eccentric comicbook movies like Tank Girl… it doesn’t here. The first movie stood up on it’s own without having to blatantly and directly reference the comic… so why do it now?

Red 2 - Comicbook Brucie
Were you aware Red 2 was a comicbook movie? You will be now – whether you like it or not!

The links to Cully Hamner and Warren Ellis‘ work are very prevalent in Red 2 – the opening credits are presented like a motion comic using the original source material… again, this is unnecessary. I’d expect that kind of style over the closing credits, but it really seemed like Dean Parisot was ramming it down our throats just a little.

My grumblings aside, I really enjoyed Red 2 – my pet peeve of the comicbook transitions didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment, and the fun factor is definitely exploited as much as possible. The action is enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, and the humour and slapstick moments keep you chuckling all the way to the end. Lacklustre performances from the Welshies (Hopkins and Zeta-Jones) also don’t ruin the film, as they are mercilfully spared screen time in favour of the main protagonists.

All in all Red 2 is worth your time, and especially so if you enjoyed it’s predecessor, and/or are a fan of any of the involved actors. I’m still itching to read the graphic novels, and the small sections I disliked haven’t put me off that goal either. Personally I’m hoping that the best never will rest, and that there will be more to come from this franchise.

Geek Pride Mod Gide – Skyrim – Part 2

0

Take a seat and grab some mead my fellow Nords; it’s time again to delve into the bewildering mire wonderful world of Skyrim modding. In Part 2 we’ll take you through the best and most indispensable mods out there at the moment.  This selection is aimed towards your average mid-range gaming PC, so while all these mods are worth a try, be warned that depending on your hardware some of these could be rather demanding when trying to run multiple ones at once. It also assumes you already know the basics of using mods with Skyrim, so if you don’t then take a look at our first guide here before reading on (or don’t. You little rebel, you).

Graphics Mods

Skyrim HD

Sky1.1
How did we ever cope before HD pebbles?

Kicking things off with a bang is Skyrim HD; an outrageously popular series of High Quality texture packs that improve the look of practically everything in the game. There are 4 different packs available; covering villages, the outdoors, dungeons and “miscellaneous”, and each pack retextures almost everything in the game. Thatched roofs are more detailed, wood is grainier and terrain textures are so detailed you can actually make out every blade of grass or twig on the ground. It really is quite something.

Static Mesh Improvement Mod

sky2.1
I bet you’ve never been so impressed by a fence before.

Another great graphics mod that does wonders to Skyrim’s visuals; the SIMM only affects certain items in the game but it will make an immediate difference once you start using it. What this mod does is improve all the “static meshes” in the game; i.e. things that should be 3d, but the developers  basically had to cut corners with, so end up looking blocky, angular, low quality and two dimensional. Things like wall decorations in houses, or rope tied around a fence. The SIMM smooths these meshes out, adds much more detail and makes them more three dimensional.  Right down to the very last potato.

W.A.T.E.R.

The WATER mod does exactly as it says on the tin; it improves the look of Skyrim’s rivers, lakes, waterfalls and oceans. It adds a more transparent feel to the water, makes them look much more lifelike and dynamic, and can even improve things like ice and splash effects, too. Fast flowing rivers and waterfalls will foam and churn, while calmer waters will ripple gently, reflecting the sun. It’s another great little mod that makes a remarkable change to Skyrim’s default waterways, which many people have mentioned look almost as bad as Morrowind.

Climates of Tamriel/Realistic Lighting Mod

sky3.1
What a beautiful day. Let’s go murder some bandits and steal their clothes!

I know this one’s a twofer but it’s worth it, as these two mods compliment each other perfectly. Whereas the other mods here improve the game’s textures, these two improve the game’s lighting and ambient effects, among many other things. Realistic weather effects, darker nights and warm or cold interiors are all part of the bargain with Climates, and Realistic Lighting in particular comes into its own indoors, when you can see rays of light and dust particles streaming in tavern windows, or leaking through a hole in a cave roof. Use alongside Skyrim HD and W.A.T.E.R. to see the land of Skyrim at its very best.

aMidian Book Of Silence/Weapon Retexture Project

You’ve covered land, you’ve covered water and you’ve covered sky. So together, these mods tackle all those weapons, armour sets and unique items that are left over. aMidianBorn’s armour mod gives steel armour decorative swirls, makes elven armour look less like it’s made out of a Ferrero Rocher wrapper and gives leather and iron a realistically worn look, whereas The Weapon Retexture Project takes every single weapon from arrows to axes and gives them a complete overhaul, turning straightforward and plainly decorated items into elaborate, beautifully crafted works of art.

Gameplay Improvements and Additions

Immersive Weapons/Immersive Armors

sky6.1
It’s like the medieval Avengers. If the avengers were made up of lizards, orcs and cats.

This downright amazing mod manages to include a huge selection of brand new high quality armour sets and weapons. From mercenaries to warchiefs, samurais to knights, there’s a huge variety of light and heavy items to forge. And as for weapons, there’s more inventiveness than Dexter’s Laboratory. There’s spears, hatchets, staves, assassin’s blades, war picks and dozens of flavours of swords from rapiers to scimitars and so much more. A huge amount of effort must’ve gone into designing and bringing to life all these items, but the best thing is that NPC’s can be seen wearing it all too, making the world feel much more varied and alive.

Towns And Cities Enhanced

sky5.1
Would you just look at that beauty. LOOK AT THE BEAUTY.

It’s quite hard to play down just how much this series of mods completely changes the towns and cities of Skyrim. All I need to say is that once installed, this mod floods every town with life with plants and trees and even new buildings, items, and more. But I really can’t do it justice with words alone; you really do need to see the difference to believe it.

Lanterns of Skyrim

To go along with the above; Lanterns of Skyrim is a wonderfully simple mod that adds a bunch of – you guessed it – lanterns all throughout the world. When night time falls, these lanterns all light up and flood towns, cities and roads with a strangely comforting and warm glow, truly bringing towns to life, and lighting your way while travelling through those dark nights on the road.

Sounds Of Skyrim

The Sounds of Skyrim is a series of ambient mods that, as you might’ve guessed, add new sounds to the game. There are 3 different packs you can install, “The Wilds”, “Civilisation” and “Dungeons”, and they all add literally hundreds of immersive sounds to the game, from the distant hammering of an anvil and the background chatter in an Inn, to ghostly howls in tombs and the simple buzzing of a bee in the wilds. I’d definitely endorse this one, as it’s surprising how much of an effect it can have on the immersion in the game.

Interesting NPC’s

If I had to pick just one thing to add to the game, it would have to be Interesting NPC’s. This one mod will add quite literally hundreds of new characters all over the world of Skyrim; fleshing out inns and cities, bringing life to the wilds, and more. But the truly amazing thing is that all these characters are voiced by professional voice actors, who do an astoundingly accurate job. Each one has their own backstory; some can be taken as followers, others have their own questlines and others still simply want to chat over a bottle of mead at the inn and tell you all about their life, their loves, and their losses. It’s difficult to overexaggerate just how immersive this mod is, and how much value it adds to the game.

Falskaar

sky7.1
Falskaar. Showing what 19 year olds can do without internet porn.

There are many excellent mods out there that add whole new quests to Skyrim. Some even add new areas to explore, but Falskaar takes this to a whole new level. A combined total of 2000 hour’s worth of work from one 19 year old has resulted in an entire new land brimming with over 20+ hour’s worth of quests, areas, monsters and fully voiced characters. It’s a massive achievement, but even more impressive is the the level of quality. So professional is this mod that most agree it’s the equivalent to an official DLC in terms of both content and size, and although it’s only been out a few weeks, it’s gained an overwhelmingly positive community response.

A New Start

A new start is both fun and useful, especially if you’re like me and are always starting new characters. Rather than the default opening, this mod makes your character awaken in a small prison cell with a mysterious statue, which you can use to choose a number of new starts in Skyrim. A bandit in a hideout, a necromancer in a cave, a soldier in the army or a simple patron of a local tavern, there are many different possibilities. The interesting thing about this mod is that it not only changes your location (and there are a number of different ones for each new start), but it also changes your starting equipment and backstory as well, so it’s very fleshed out for those of you who like your immersion. If you like a challenge try the “left for dead” option, which starts you in the middle of nowhere, with nothing except the clothes on your back.

Essential Utility Mods

SKYUi

SkyUI is a truly beautiful piece of kit which every self-respecting Skyrim player should have. It replaces Skyrim’s notoriously cumbersome menus with a much more streamlined version, compatible with gamepads or mouse and keyboard. Lists are longer and more visible, sorting is made easier and object info is easier to see and compare. It’s probably the most fundamental mod for any Skyrim player, which is why it’s over twice as popular as the second most downloaded mod on the Skyrim Nexus. It even has an added bonus, too. It introduces an extra menu in the in-game options for managing your installed mods, so you can adjust your mods without having to constantly exit the game.   One important thing to note with SkyUI is that it requires another mod to work. You must install the Skyrim Script Extender and run the game from that rather than from the launcher or from Steam. However, full instructions on how to do this are on both the SkyUI and the Script Extender’s mod pages.

The Unofficial Patches

You might’ve guessed by now that compatibility is a huge issue when it comes to modding, so if you’re going to be doing any amount of modding whatsoever, you’re going to need these patches. There’s one for Skyrim and 3 more for the DLC packs, and they help by fixing some common issues that the official patches don’t cover, as well as helping the game run better when it’s modded, too. Pretty much essential.

TES5Edit/BOSS Loader

I’ll go into detail on how to use these handy little mods in a later guide, but in a nutshell, together these two can make your game infinitely more stable by identifying issues with your setup. Incorrect load orders, incompatible files, corrupt files, they can identify 90% of the things that either slow your game down or crash it entirely, and help you to fix them without removing the mods entirely.

SBW

The Simple Borderless Window is, as its name suggests, a mod which allows you to play Skyrim in windowed mode without the large, distracting border around the edges. This is useful specifically if your FPS is taking a hit from all those texture packs, as playing in windowed mode can help with performance.

Hopefully this guide’s given you some inspiration on how to improve your own game. Of course there are many, many more out there than those listed here, these are just some personal and community favourites. But as a starter guide, this list will give you all you need to make some serious improvements to your game. Keep an eye out for our next guide where we’ll talk about the more advanced aspect of Skyrim modding; the wonderful world of ENB’s.

Adventure Time With Stacey Rebecca Alternative Model and Cosplayer

https://StaceyRebecca.storenvy.com

Who is Stacey Rebecca??
My name is Stacey Rebecca and I’m an alternative model and cosplayer from London, England.  I started cosplaying about a year ago, taking my nerdy costumes to photoshoots etc – and it really took off!  My Mary Jane photos went viral overnight and I was dropped right into the international cosplay community.  I love to create powerful images that are true to the source material and evoke an emotional response.  I work a lot with Sexy Cosplay Girls, who I now work with as a member of the team, scouting locations, lending a hand on shoots and interviewing the very best cosplay models.  I’ve recently started my international convention adventure, attending Megacon in Florida and New York Comic Con this autumn.  Cosplay has given me a huge creative outlet, allowed me to make some amazing new friends… And to travel the world!  Here’s to more adventures ^_^
QUESTION TIME!!!

1) What brought you into the world of cosplay? Tell us about your first costume, was it a great success, or was it all about trial and error?

Halloween is one of my favourite times of year and I’ve always loved fancy dress parties.  I think it just got to the point where I was frustrated with store bought costumes either not fitting right or not being accurate enough, so I started making adjustments to things.  My first real costume was Psylocke, which I made for a party.  I took it along to a photoshoot for fun and it went down really well – I had no idea cosplay was a ‘thing’ until that moment.  It was very hack and slash, but not terrible for a first attempt.  I brought Psylocke back out for London Anime Con this year and she still held up!

2) How long have you been cosplaying?
I made the Psylocke costume back in August 2011, but it wasn’t until the infamous Mary Jane shoot in July 2012 that I really started classing myself as a cosplayer.
3) What are your current cosplay projects (well, if they aren’t top secret)?
Ha!  I like to keep things on the down low for as long as possible – part of the joy I get from my Facebook page is posting progress photos and getting people to guess what they think I’m making.  I have 2 costumes currently in progress, one is DC and one is from Magic The Gathering.  That’s all I’m saying!  You’ll have to keep your eyes peeled on my page 😉
4) So your most iconic cosplay, within the world of the interwebs, is your recreation of J Scott Cambell’s MJ; which we know I am also a huge fan of.

Can you tell us what went into recreating this Amazing Spiderman cover art?
Honestly, not a lot!  I had followed the debate on the Internet surrounding the cover – people recreating the pose in hilarious ways, complaining that it was unrealistic etc, and I thought that it would be fun to see if it was really possible.  In all honesty, I thought it would be an easy costume to make (I had little to no skills at all at this point) and thought it would be really fun.  It was a really silly shoot, and the whole time I was trying not to laugh because what we were doing was so ridiculous.  I am really lucky the result went down so well!

5) How do you feel about the explosion that has been created across the internet by this image?
It was all a bit strange at first, I woke up to thousands of notifications and had no idea what was going on.  It was bizarre to me because it was just a bit of fun.  All of a sudden I was being called a ‘cosplayer’ and I was suddenly being critiqued on everything – my costume, my facial expression, my boobs, my weight.  There were some really harsh comments, some really nasty people – and for a few days it really got to me, I didn’t want to leave the house.  But soon enough I realised that was just the nature of the Internet, and got on with things.  I’m a lot more resilient to those kind of attacks now, for sure.
6) Would you say the internet has had a negative effect on the cosplay community?
The Internet can bring about lots of nastiness from cowards behind computer screens, bitchiness and drama… It’s certainly made it more competitive, I think.  But without it, we would not have a platform to share our work – and get to know each other!  I very much appreciate the fact that people are able to follow my work, and that I’ve been able to chat with some really awesome cosplayers and artists.
7) What is your most favourite character you have cosplayed to date?
Magik, definitely.  She is just so much fun to cosplay – the costume is killer and I feel like a total badass in it.  That’s the magic of cosplay for me!
8) Any character you really want to do, but feel would be too difficult to execute?
I try not to let myself think that way, because I believe that anything is possible if you put your mind to it!  While I am limited by my current skill set, there is always room to learn more and expand my skills.  I would love to learn how to make a Power Ranger helmet and do a female Green Ranger from Mighty Morphin’!
9) Do you make your costumes from scratch, or do you commission them?
My costumes are usually a combination of bought items and pieces from scratch.  I try to make most of it myself but sometimes it’s easier (and cheaper) to buy certain items pre-made and then adjust them / customise if necessary – things like hot pants, or vest tops.  Then you can focus on the details!
10) I’ve seen you working with Worbla recently for your Magik (Uncanny X-Men) cosplay; how did you find it?
Really fun!  Working with a new material is always tricky but there’s a reason Worbla is described as a ‘friendly’ thermoplastic – it’s super easy to use.  It’s perfect for armour and I’m looking forward to making some more detailed pieces with it.
11) What costume has given you the most grief?
Connor Kenway from Assassin’s Creed 3 was a bit of a nightmare!  I’m still very new to cosplay so often I take on projects that are way out of my comfort zone, but that’s the only way you learn I guess!  Connor definitely taught me to think properly about a costume and make a list of all the various components before you start – it really helps to get an idea of how much work it’s going to be, and what parts you need to start researching first.
12) What conventions will we be seeing you at for the remainder of 2013?
I’ll be attending Cardiff Comic Con for the first time at the end of August with the lovely Masubi, followed by Eurogamer in September which I am super excited about (new consoles, yay!), as well as New York Comic Con in October to meet some of my Stateside fans, and MCM London at the end of October.  After that I plan lots of sleeping!
13) You’re a model as well as a cosplayer, are there any modelling projects lined up?
I have some time off from study over the summer so I’m trying to fit in some fun alt shoots here and there – it’s something that I really enjoy and it’s so much less stressful than a cosplay shoot!  I’m known for being a bit of a nerd, so my alt shoots always end up being slightly nerdy too.  It’s a lot of fun!
14) What’s your advice for people just starting out within the world of cosplay?
Have fun with it.  Don’t be disheartened by not being able to do something.  Google it, look up tutorials on YouTube, practice.  And most of all, do not let other people get you down.  Don’t let other people dictate what you can and can’t cosplay.  Cosplay is about being whoever you want to be, irrespective of age, race or build!
15) You’re a massive Assassin Creed fan, what started this obsession?
Assassin’s  Creed 2 was the first (and only) game I ever 1000G’d (got all the achievements for).  There was just something about it that I fell into, and I never wanted to stop playing.  The series is just so brilliant, I’m a total sucker for it.  I cannot WAIT for AC4.  Edward Kenway could potentially be as charismatic and swoon-worthy as Ezio.  Get in.

Haters gonna hate or how I learned to love Dynasty Warriors and not care what people think.

ss180L

Do you prefer Wu, Shu, or Wei?

If that makes no sense then you’re clearly not a fan of Tecmo Koei’s long running cult smash Dynasty Warriors.

Dynasty Warriors is a hack and slash action game based on Romance of the three kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong. A highly regarded work based around the ‘Three Kingdoms’ era of Chinese history which blends history with myth and dramatises the lives of numerous fuedal lords and their retainers.

The franchise now on its eighth instalment (or seventh in Japan) has sold millions in it’s native Japan where the last title Shin Sangoku Musou 6 or Dynasty Warriors 7 topped the charts with many fans cosplaying as their favourite characters in the West however it’s more of a niche title.

Dynasty Warriors is also one of the most maligned titles in gaming, with detractors stating it is bland, ugly, shallow and completely lacking in any innovation for such a long running series.

Most of these arguments and criticisms are misguided. Casually dismissing it as a mindless button mashing game is dictating that players aren’t allowed to play games the way they want to play them, although contrary to popular opinion it’s pretty difficult to make it through a battle just pressing square repeatedly.

It’s not mindless either with strategy and awareness being more crucial than ever in the latest game. Ploughing through the enemy army without paying attention to what’s happening elesewhere on the battlefield is almost guaranteed to result in failure.

Ambushes, siege engines, betrayals and more occur in the heat of battle. Fail to stop a messenger and your supply depot could get burnt down crushing your army’s morale

prompting half your army to flee the battle field. Fail to come to a generals aid and your base camp could get swamped by enemy soldiers. There’s more to most battles than just killing the enemy general.

Other stages may feature something entirely different like infiltrating a supply depot unseen or escaping from a burning castle, your allies can vary from whole armys to none at all leaving you to fight your way to victory single handed.

Dismissing it as just being about fighting an opposing army is the same as dismissing Street Fighter II for being just about one on one fights.

One of the major appeals of the game is its characters, with each new game in the series adding previously non-playable characters to the roster which now stands at 70. This isn’t like Mortal Kombat of old either where half of them are the same but a different colour.

Much like Game of Thrones it’s impossible to have just one favourite and in a refreshing change to the vast majority of characters in gaming they’re not just buff alpha males either. Whilst there’s clearly some dramatic license taken with its portrayal of characters Dynasty Warriors still remains the only game where not only are several characters considerably older than the norm but it also features numerous warrior women from barbarian queen Zhurong to the more traditionally attired Zhen Ji.

Cao Cao fights his way through the enemy.

These characters stories are what lies at the heart of the game with each new entry in the series regularly adding another element of a characters story that was only mentioned briefly previously. Xiahou Dun takes an arrow to the eye at the battle of Xiaopei and keeps on fighting, Zhang Fei secures the retreat of his sworn brother Liu Bei and a score of peasants at the battle of Chang Ban Bridge by intimidating their pursuers with a fearsome war cry, Zhou Tai rescues Sun Quan from certain death after fighting off a horde of bandits at Xuancheng, Dian Wei secures Cao Cao’s retreat by fighting off numerous enemy soldiers after Zhang Xiu betrays him in Wan Castle.

It’s not hard to see why this story has been around for generations.

The differences between these characters are more than cosmetic, each officer has his own preferred weapon from the traditionally fitting like Zhao Yun’s Dragon spear to the more anachronistic like Sun Ce’s Tonfa. Some handle crowds better than others and musou attacks, special attacks that require a meter to fill up, vary massively with some

being more suited to taking out an enemy officer like Zhang Fei’s and some being more suited to taking out a crowd like Guan Yu’s.

They also have their own personality’s too and despite problems with pronounciations in the earlier games the voice acting fits well due

Guan Yu, famous for his beard and his fighting prowess.

to the same voice actors voicing the same characters over several games.

Despite the large number of characters they are easily distinguishable so there’s no way Cao Cao could be mistaken for Zhou Yu.

The games story mode with a seperate campaign for each kingdom unlike earlier games is now more in fitting with the source material  with only certain officers being available for certain battles and officers dying in specific battles too.

In terms of sheer value for money, 3 lengthy campaigns alongside another for a new kingdom is pretty good going.

Dynasty Warriors despite it’s dramatic licence can also teach you quite a bit about The Three Kingdoms era which is ironic for a game perceived as being brainless and being able to research the real historical figures behind the characters in the game is something pretty much unique to Dynasty Warriors and the similar Samurai Warriors which is based on the Sengoku period of Japanese history .

So it might have flaws, its never been one of the most polished games but each game does look noticably better and its A.I might be pretty poor but then if every soldier on the battle field was your equal, a) it would make your legendary character seem pretty unlegendary and b) it wouldn’t be much fun as each battle would probably take hours.

Everytime a Dynasty Warriors game appears there’s the usual questions of ‘Who actually buys this?’ and ‘When are they going to change things?’ and it will sell to the usual niche core of fans as it usually does in the West but a new Call Of Duty which can be accused of being just as lacking in innovation ,especially to an outsider, is released and it will sell millions of units and people will be talking about it as though not playing Call of Duty means you’re weird, it’s a striking contrast.

NineWorld Geek Fest 2013 is coming to London 9-11 August!

9Worlds_GeekFest_2013_hires_4_by_3[1]Nine Worlds GeekFest 2013 is coming to London on the weekend of 9-11 August, with the website just releasing the full program, and it is HUGE! Every element of geek culture is being represented *deep breath* cosplay, video games, board games, role play games, books, comics, movies, theatre, music, guest speakers, signings, writing workshops, art exhibits, stand up comedy and a particularly nerdy partridge in a clockwork pear tree.

Just a quick flick through, and here are my highlights:

Muggle Quidditch – A live action Quidditch match that players can drop in and out of over the course of three hour session. Would love to know how they do this, should be a blast!

Pimp my nerf – A workshop pimping people’s nerf guns with a steampunk twist. Cogs, gears and foam darts, oh my!

Indie RPGs and Storygasm – A chance for new budding designers to show off their ideas and get the feedback. A chance to find the ‘next big thing’ in the RPG world.

Water dancing with Syrio Forel – I kid you not. ‘The’ Game of Thrones Syrio Forel (actor Miltos Yerolemou) will be giving classes on sword fighting! Miltos is a trained professional sword fighter, so this promises to be an amazing experience.

Born Of Hope – A Lord of the Rings film from Director Kate Madison, telling the tragic, romantic tale of the Dúnedain and the birth of Aragorn. A must for LotR fans.

This isn’t even close to all the amazing events going on at this convention, with something for literally everybody. Have fun!

Sarah Michelle Gellar about Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Movie

0

You may talk about how your favourite series was cancelled and movie sequels not happening or sat in development hell; however for some of us we have been waiting since May 2003 for our next glimpse our favourite characters.

Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers
Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers

In 1997 Joss Whedon created his first television series, Buffy the Vampire which received critical and popular acclaim that usually reached between four and six million viewers on original airings.  Buffy is often to this day cited as one of the greatest shows of all time.  When UPN cancelled the show after 7 successful series, Buffy continued in novels, video games and comic books including the Whedon directed comic book Buffy Series 8 that continued where series 7 left off.  In fact Buffy was so successful that in 1999 during the middle of the Buffy run, Whedon created the highly successful spin off Angel that ran until 2004.

Oh the memories that the Buffy and Angel fans alike still hold today; however what they are missing and still long for is the continuation of their favourite characters, whether this is in further television series or movies.  When Buffy was originally cancelled Whedon worked on a several spin offs.  The first was Buffy: The Animated Series, in which the regular cast was to return to provide the voices for their characters.  All though 20th Century Fox showed interest in developing and selling the show to another network, the show was never picked up following the initial three minute pilot.

The other series was called ‘Ripper’, based around Rupert Giles (Anthony Steward Head).  The closest we got to this series was in 2007 when Whedon confirmed that talks were almost complete on a 90 minute special with the BBC and Anthony Stewart Head; however sadly this never materialised.

James Marsters as Spike

There was also talks of a TV series called ‘Slayer School’ but Whedon was not so keen on this idea and so this idea was dropped early.  The two most promising spin-offs after Ripper was a Faith spin-off and a Spike movie.  Sadly Eliza Dushku declined the pitch and opted for the show Tru Calling and in 2012 James Marsters killed Spike by announcing that he considers himself to visibly old to continue the roll without having “to cheat”.

When reading the above you would think all hope is lost, yet recently Sarah Michelle Gellar said about would she do a Buffy movie:

If there ever was the right story, we would do it. But the thing with Buffy is that Buffy was a movie, and it ultimately didn’t work as a film.

Yeah… that kinda put the nail in the coffin (ahem!) for a Buffy movie, despite numerous fans declaring the a movie is happening.  Gellar is right, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a movie in 1992 written by Joss Whedon, but this movie is the prequel to the TV series in some ways, it not actually a prequel as such.  The movie does a cult following but was considered a flop and failed on a number of levels.

Cast of Season 5 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer

With the cast, like the rest of us, getting older and older and Whedon going from strength to strength, saddly Buffy fans I must advise you that I cannot see any further series or movies to the Buffy franchise.  Come on, Whedon only managed to complete one series of Firefly and  a follow up movie.  Lets not be greedy, yes we were here first, but we have have so many more memories, Firefly will no doubt come first.

So is all lost for Buffy fans?  Hellmouth no! (see what I did there?) with the success of other supernatural programs like, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, Teen Wolf, Supernatural, Sanctuary to name a few, there is still plenty of room for Buffy; however, this would no doubt have to be a retelling and considering Whedons’ schedule, the most he could be at this time would be an executive producer.

If you are missing Buffy and the Scooby Gang, the complete series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is currently available on Netflix.com and Lovefilm.com. Sarah Michelle Gellar is currently filming in the up coming TV series ‘The Crazy Ones’ with Robin Williams.

‘2 Guns’ Shoots to the Top

2953206-2+guns+poster+washington+wahlbergMark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington star in the action comedy movie adaptation of BOOM! Studios title ‘2 Guns’.  In its opening weekend in the US it has claimed the top spot with grossing over $27 million for Universal and marks Denzel’s 11th, yes 11th, consecutive nationwide opening film to debut in excess of $20 million, according to BoxOffice Mojo.

This is good news for Mark Wahlberg who after last year’s success with Universals ‘TED’ had failed to quite deliver the same box office returns with Paramount’s ‘Broken City’ and Fox’s ‘Pain & Gain’- both are still good films but couldn’t grab the movie goers money.

2-guns-001For many who have watched ‘2 Guns’ or are aware of the movie are completely unaware that this is actually based on a comic book.  It’s sad but true, there are more comics out there than just Marvel and DC, but with them hogging the headlines and the top box office positions you can be forgiven.  But don’t worry, spread the word that this is another comic book movie success and maybe more great gems will become live action movies.  Which alternate comic book studios characters would you like to see hit the silver screen?

‘2 Guns’ beat ‘The Smurfs 2’ which took just over $18 million down to third and Marvel’s sequel ‘The Wolverine‘ which is still going strong in second spot with $21 million in its second week.
