It’s a Bat-tastrophy.

0

Where were you when it happened? Were you enjoying your evening, blissfully unaware of what was to come? Or did you hear the news when you woke? Should that be the case, consider yourself fortunate, for last night’s slumber may well be the last rest you get.

Of course I’m talking about the Batman casting news. Yes, it’s official: Ben Affleck will be the new Batman – the Bat-fleck, if you will.

And where was I when I heard? I’d just gotten home from a long day at work. When I read the news, I checked to make sure it was not, in fact, April Fools. Work days are long, certainly, but apparently, I was more willing to believe I’d somehow auto-piloted through several months before I could believe this announcement.

Let’s itemize the issues that arise with the coming of the Bat-fleck:

  1. He’s very much a known actor, and with that comes the risk that we’ll not see Batman, but rather Ben Affleck in a Batman suit. While fame isn’t an automatic kiss of death (certainly people knew Keaton before he donned the suit), Affleck isn’t typically cast in parts such that we can easily see him transitioning to a Batman role. Unless we talk about…

      2. Daredevil.

BenAffleckWants

I’m not sure I have to elaborate on that.

  1. The interaction between Batman and Superman is less than overly friendly. In comics, we see a lot of sarcastic Bat-remarks and banter. There’s a struggle for dominance, and more often than not, Batman implies Superman is the less qualified superhero. I don’t think I can believe this coming from Affleck; nothing about him screams “dominant” to me.
  1. There were better options. Batman must be believably charming, dark, highly intelligent, and ever so slightly disturbed. When I picture Affleck playing anything remotely edgy, I just see him making an angry face. This is insufficient Batman-ing. Honestly, I was hoping we’d get an Ian Somerhalder Batman. The nicest thing I can say here is, “Well, at least it’s not Ryan Gosling.”
  1. We have to believe Affleck can do this to Henry Cavill: BatmanvSuperman
  2.  Wil Wheaton said it best:

Wil Wheaton

In the end, while we can hope for a response to the public outcry (as we saw from Microsoft with the Xbox One debacle), it seems acceptance is our best option. Am I at this step yet? No, not entirely. Should we create a recovery program to help us all cope with this traumatic, emotionally scarring, and abominable news? Perhaps. As with any great tragedy, we must stand together in our mourning. And with this thought in mind:

Hold me.
Hold me.

Take heart, boys and girls. Together we shall overcome.

Well shit, gaming community, you got more deals going on than Billy Mays (God rest his soul). Along with Grand Theft auto 4 , the steam sale and the several billion Humble bundles available to the avid button clicker, it is a good time to buy.

always trust a man with a beard. unless you’re at a park.

And now XBLA steps up to the plate with some astonishing sales, not to mention their free games for gold campaign. A turn around apology for the gaffs of the xbone? Who cares?! Free stuff!

Anyways one particular deal that grabbed me by the short a curlies is gargantuan sneakathons Metal Gear Solid 2+3. For only £7.65.In HD. Sound good?

"Dayum son! deals so good my face gon' smudgy!"
“Dayum son! deals so good my face gon’ smudgy!”

Metal Gear Solid 3 takes you back deep into the history of the franchise, whereby you play as Big Boss and take his journey into bosshood. The mechanics are beautiful, the story is gripping and well written, and the enemies are well thought out (even if that bee guy is a rip from ninja scroll) and challenging, and you can create a game ending time-paradox by killing Revolver Ocelot. Add to this the incredible soundtrack and dynamic gameplay and you have 12-15 hours of gaming bliss.

Also included is MGS2 where you get to play as Solid Snake for a while. So there’s that.

YAY SNAKE.
YAY SNAKE.

So in summary:
30+ hours gameplay
Mullets
Stealth
Guns
Robots
Snake doing that thing where he repeats the same line as the last character as a question
Humour
Nudity
Ape Escape Mini Game.
All for that low low price of £7.65, hell I might buy it twice!

Grand Theft Auto IV is currently available on the PlayStation Store for the insane price of £4.99 or you can get the The Complete Edition which also includes The Lost and the Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony add on packs for an even crazier £6.49. The add on packs for GTA IV are probably the most highly anticipated DLC items of this generation and are each almost like a full game in their own right. Both deals are available using this link in a web browser or via the PlayStation Store on your PS3 console.

Ben Affleck… Batman?

0

Yup, it’s true boys and girls:  the man cast as Batman for the upcoming Man of Steel sequel is none other than Ben Affleck.

BAB

Reactions to this news have been mixed, with phrases such as “killing off the DC movieverse” [SKB] thrown around the Geek Pride water cooler, but I for one think this could be a good move- sure, Daredevil wasn’t great, but Dogma proved he can play the part of a borderline psychotic bringer of alleged justice with astonishing realism.

I’m on board, DC.  Just don’t screw this up.

New Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag trailer!

0

A new trailer has been released for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag at Gamescon 2013. Assassin’s Creed 4 was announced in February and will be released on October 9th in the US and Canada and November 1st in Europe. It will not only be available to buy for PS3, PC, Xbox 360 and Wii U; it will also be available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The game centres around Edward Kenway, the pirate father of Haytham Kenway from Assassin’s Creed 3, and the video shows the Edward roaming around the game’s various locations. There is said to be 50 different locations in the game, making its environment the biggest of the franchise so far. Lead writer Darby McDevitt has stated that the main campaign will last around 20 hours and that it will be light on the present day aspect of the games, giving players more time for pirating.

Geek Gold – Batman Gets Roasted!

0

I love it when staples of popular culture cross paths. Every now and again the rarest and finest of combinations occur in the geek world and for some reason these sort of things have always really appealed to me. Remember that bit in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back where Mark Hamill referenced his iconic turn as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars while simultaneously spoofing his exploits as the voice of the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series? That’s the kind of moment I mean.

Hamill

That’s why I had to share this little piece of gold that I stumbled across during a Youtube bender: a clip from Batman: The Brave and the Bold in which the Dark Knight is subjected to a Roast by his rogues gallery.

There’s a couple of reasons why I find this so appealing. At first it was simply the notion that the star of the annual Comedy Central Roasts and legendary insult comic Jeff Ross appeared in a Batman cartoon. But there is so much going besides that. For one thing the Joker is so true to character here, he demonstrates quite early on that he can literally burn his arch enemy to death at the press of a button, but rather than just do that he arranges an elaborate exercise in humiliation for the Caped Crusader, just because he can. Classic Joker!

RossBatmanNot only does Jeff Ross steal the show with uncharacteristic family-friendly material, he also assists Batman in taking down the villains and throwing out some cringe-worthy puns. Let that sink in for a second, an acerbic, R-Rated comic took part in a fight scene so cheesy that it had to be referencing the old Adam West Batman TV show.

That is comic genius.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

Good news everybody! Channel 4 will be airing the hugely anticipated  Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D from geek God (all hail the) Whedon. That’s right people if you only have freeview you shall not be missing out.

An airdate has not yet been confirmed, just that it will be coming in Autumn.  But if the trend of other US exports, such as Game Of Thrones and The Walking Dead, continues, the Brits should expect to see episodes within a week of them broadcasting in the US. Which simply means we don’t have to avoid the internet for weeks in case of spoilers, yay!

[box_light]Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary.[/box_light]

Gamescom 2013: Bad News for the UK and Europe

0

PS4 vs Xbox One composite

During yesterday’s 2013 Gamescom press conference, Sony confirmed that customers who buy any of this year’s forthcoming Activision, EA, Ubisoft, Warner Bros or first-party PS3 releases will be eligible for a special upgrade program which will enable an upgrade to the PS4 program for a nominal fee. Microsoft quickly followed suit this morning and confirmed that the same scheme will apply to the Xbox 360 and Xbox One- but unfortunately, all of this may come with a catch.

Understandably, the first game to be officially announced for this program is Call of Duty: Ghosts but eligibility may be retailer-specific. Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg  has today stated that “retail programmes by Amazon and Gamestop [will] allow our players to upgrade” within the US. UK partners have not been confirmed, but since the UK has proportionally more major online video game retailers than most other countries -as well as huge video games sales generated by mail order catalogues and supermarkets- this could all get quite confusing.

Additionally, the small charge required to upgrade has been confirmed as $10 in North America, €10 in the EU or £10 in the UK, meaning that UK gamers will be forced to pay approximately 40% more for than American players judging by the current exchange rate.  It is not yet known whether this pricing is Call of Duty specific or whether the costs will vary by publisher, but we’ll keep you updated once further details become available.

Finding ‘That Show’

0

lost-girl-041

There’s not been a lack of shows for the intrepid viewer to seek out in recent years, from Grimm to Continuum, The Walking Dead, True Blood and numerous others which feature fantastical or futuristic ideas. Whilst some may be good, they’re not ‘that show: the show that snaps you out of your apathetic seen-it-all daze and makes you actually pay attention and want to see the next episode .

small-kenzi-and-bo
Ksenia Solo as Kenzi and Anna Silk as Bo.

I found ‘that show’ when I stumbled across Lost Girl- something that I was completely oblivious to despite it starting in 2010. As soon as Bo, played brilliantly by Anna Silk, appeared on screen and saved Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) from a nefarious wannabe date rapist by draining the life from him via a kiss, things looked interesting.

The world was intriguing; a world of the Fae with every Fae choosing one of two sides -Light or Dark- perpetually on the edge of a war which would spell chaos for both the Fae and the world of men, who are oblivious to their existence. Bo ,a succubus who feeds on life energy during sex, is oblivious to her true nature until meeting Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) who explains the world of the Fae to a confused and annoyed Bo, who just wants to skip town like she always does.

While there was a solid foundation in the setting, this interest was compounded by the dynamic interplay between Bo and Kenzi as things progressed. In a genuinely shocking change to the norm, these were female characters that were well-written, but more than that, weren’t just there to be conveniently kidnapped occasionally like the clichéd damsel in distress waiting for the square-jawed male lead to rescue them.

The term ‘strong female character’ is something I despise as a descriptive term, as it implies that all other female characters are ‘weak’ and on top of that is a poor catch-all term for describing any female character that isn’t beholden to the status quo.

Bo and Kenzi are two of the best female characters to feature in a series that doesn’t have the name Joss Whedon in the opening credits- this show was created by Michelle Lovretta. Fiesty, independent, strong willed, sassy, capable, witty, intelligent, intuitive and brave are all applicable.

Bo, despite being all of the above, has also led a lonely life due to her inability to control her ‘gift’ and is haunted by the trail of dead in her wake and, for all her kickass attitude, also has vulnerability; whilst Kenzi is a punky, hyperactive, street-smart grifter with questionable connections, and the dynamic between the two is what makes this so good. Smart and spiky dialogue- ‘Thanks for the cock block’ says a relieved Bo after Kenzi pulls her off a woman she was about to drain, and Kenzi’s penchant for snappy one liners like ‘My head is pounding harder than a sailor on shore leave’ are just a couple of the  great things here.

Dyson-lost-girl-32939342-1200-1677
Kris Holden-Ried as Dyson.

Unlike so many other TV series which feature otherworldly creatures of some sort or another, Lost Girl isn’t afraid to have some fun with the premise. Kenzi’s response after seeing Dyson reveal his true nature for the first time: ‘That was so awesome!’ with a look of childlike glee on her face.

Lovretta has pulled off an impressive feat by creating a series that revolves around two great female characters- most shows are lucky if they have one, and having them as the main character is rarer still. There’s a distinctly subversive bait and switch to the idea of a series about an attractive succubus and her feisty accomplice actually featuring some of the best written female characters in a long time.

Given its main character is a sexual predator (in a very literal sense) its approach to sex, avoiding the oh-so-common problem of the sexual double standard which dictates men are free to have as much sex as possible with no negative connotations, is also most welcome. This is also used in a humorous manner too, Kenzi getting showered with dust as Bo engages in an energetic threesome upstairs in her creaky old house being just one example.

With an interesting mythology as a backdrop, some intriguing supporting characters and some neat ideas Lost Girl is impressive stuff- as Kenzi would say, that was so awesome!
