A Cheeky Lunchtime Batman Fangasm.

0

Batman:Adam West

Joker: Mark Hamill

Commissioner Gordon: Dick Van Dyke

Sound like a dream cast? Well it happened guys. It fucking happened.

In keeping with today’s Lego theme, I came across this film created by a graduate from a DAVE (Digital And Visual Effects) School graduate, and feel y’all should benefit from it. The animation is surprisingly crisp for a graduate of a one year program and the voice acting talent…well it speaks for itself. See what I did there? Yeah.

Enjoy!

Improper Books to launch Briar in early 2014

0

Soon after Improper Books announced the launch of their silent comics: Butterfly Gate and Knight&Dragon, the news of another original story came out. It seems like Benjamin Read and Chris Wildgoose, alongside Jordan Boyd and Jim Campbell are ready to bring yet another dark tale to the table – Briar – focusing on European myth and its folklore. We’re still a few months away from its release, in early 2014, but by the looks of things, it’s going to cause quite a splash. I don’t know about you, but I am excited.

BRIAR, BY BENJAMIN READ AND CHRIS WILDGOOSE

Written by Benjamin Read and illustrated by Chris Wildgoose, with colours by Jordan Boyd and lettering by Jim Campbell, BRIAR follows the story of the cursed Princess Layka, and Kaye, The Knight of Thorns, who searches for a way to break the curse and set her free.

Cursed by the shadow-sorcerer, Celik, Layka is trapped behind an impassable wall of enchanted briar, and seeks an end to the magic that keeps her shut off from the world. Trapped for years behind the living wall of the briar, she awaits her one true knight, Kaye, who has been tasked with the quest to break the curse and set her free.

Inspired by European myth and folklore, Briar is an episodic series of nested stories woven into the fabric of Layka and Kaye’s ceaseless quest.

‘Briar is Improper doing what we do best, dark fairy tales,’ said Chris Wildgoose. ‘I don’t think Ben or I could be any more at home than with knights, magic, and monsters, and we’ve really raised the bar for ourselves with this.’

About his illustration for Briar, Chris said, ‘We also wanted to push the boat out art-wise, so we’ve gone incredibly detailed with all the interior artwork. Storytelling is paramount, but I’ve tried to go as intricate with the art as Ben’s tale. I’m also so excited to have Jordan Boyd on colours with us. He gets what we’re aiming for and brings a whole other life to my inks.’

‘Briar is one of the books I’ve always wanted to write,’ said Benjamin Read. ‘Set against a background of eastern European folklore, it’s a Russian doll of nested stories, wearing a coat of fairy tales but subverting every trope within them.’

A limited UK indie edition of Briar is scheduled for release in 2014.

A free colour preview of the first part of Briar will be available at the THOUGHT BUBBLE COMIC CON 2013 from the Improper Books tables. You can find us in NEW DOCK HALL, tables 51-53. Copies of the free preview will also be available from supporting retailers.

Aliens, big guns and punk rock collide in new comic Exit Generation.

0

Imagine a world where 95% of humanity has left the Earth. Disembarking on huge space faring vessels to seek out a new home, one where they don’t have to contend with xgenadovercrowding and a lack of resources.

Flash forward 30 years and think about what life must be like for those still on Earth.

This is the premise for ‘Exit Generation’ a new self-published comic from writer Sam Read and artist Caio Oliveira.

In this future the Earth has become a tranquil and idyllic place ,with plenty of resources to go around war is now a thing of the past.

Jack lives in this idyllic world spending his days hanging out with his friend Mo. Jack has developed an obsession for cultural elements of the past, with action films and the anarchic energy of punk music being just two of his favourite things.

Jack is bored though, tired of living off the excitement of the past and wanting something to happen in the present.

His wish is granted when a group of extra-terrestrial visitors show up and Jack realises that maybe boredom isn’t so bad after all.

Digital copies of Exit Generation issue#1 are available here CLICK ME

If you’d rather get your hands on a physical copy then they will available at  the Thought Bubble Convention in Leeds, UK, where writer Sam Read will be there (Table 2 in the Royal Armouries Hall to be precise) to answer any questions you may have.

LEGO: Marvel Superheroes (Xbox)

lego-marvel-super-heroes-21751-2880x1800

Lego Marvel Super Hero’s is the newest release in the long line of Lego games; titles including: Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Batman and Lord of the Rings. Being a big fan of the Marvel Universe and Lego in general, you can imagine how excited I was when this little beauty dropped through my door and from the initial opening sequence of the game I knew I was not going to be disappointed.

The first level puts you in control of Iron Man and The Hulk (let the brick smashing carnage begin!). And so I got my green on and pulverised the living daylights out of bricks and the attacking sand creatures dispatched by the Sand Man…. HULK SMASH! Then it was Iron Mans turn, and to my surprise the millionaire playboy was nearly as good to control. I couldn’t stop flying around and launching attacks at those troublesome sand Creatures….yeah… I’m Iron Man.

After getting through the area I was greeted by Abomination, triggering a brutal action sequence between him and the Hulk which resulted in both figures punching each other in the face repeatedly until the Hulk, naturally, prevailed.

For those who are not aware, the creators have added a new kind of Lego character to the game, these are the big figures and come in the form of The Hulk, Abomination, The Juggernaut, Colossus, Rhino, Venom, and many others. All of whom are absolutely brutal and are handy against multiple enemies.

On top of the aforementioned the selection of characters in LMSH is huge, spanning from Iron man and Wolverine to Squirrel girl and….  Howard… the …duck? and even the most adult of superheroes have been included in the action; The Punisher and Blade being two good examples of this, minus the graphic themes they are both know for of course.

As the storyline goes, if you are a Marvel fan, you wont disappointed, with missions taking place around recognisable locations in their universe, including: the Daily Bugle, Stark Tower, Asgaurd, Dr Doom’s Castle, the fantastic four tower, the S.H.E.I.L.D Helicarrier and the awesome gem that is the X Mansion! TT Games have made sure we Marvel fan boys are suitable gorged in Marvel references.

LMSH has also delivered on some excellent voice acting and comedic banter between the characters, with some of the best (in my humble opinion) being between The Hulk, Iron Man and Wolverine “Hulk smashes smelly sideburn man!”. Also the encounters with villains are also really amusing, and are just how you would imagine them to be, but (naturally) with a Lego twist.

The graphics are, as you would expect in a Lego games, colourful and polished; the universe has been animated with absolute care and consideration to represent both Marvel and Lego; and the game play (tried and tested in previous titles) is as solid as it has always been: break things made of bricks, then make things using bricks. Nothing new really but why fix something that isn’t broken..HULK…SMASH!

Granted, the repetitive nature of most lego games might not be for everyone but the sheer scale, coupled with the trade mark funny quips and a proverbial treasure trove of Easter Eggs ( or should that be a proverbial basket?) just keeps you glued to the screen and after 10 hours of play, I’m yet to get bored.

Some of my favourite moments so far have been the small appearances of Deadpool, mini games with Gambit and the ‘STAN LEE IN PERIL!’ Moments, in which you can rescue him from hazardous situations. My last Jaunt around the city was absolutely fantastic, I selected Venom and Carnage then proceeded to terrorise the mini figure population of New York City and at one point came across a high lighted area, where to my surprise I was confronted by a huge 90’s sentinel from X- Men, complete with its signature phrases and attacks…….mega!

Over all this Lego Marvel Heroes is a worthy entry to the Lego series. The game play is as solid as ever, the sheer scale is gobsmacking, it’s funny, in-depth and I honestly can’t fault it.

Buy this game or else I’ll get angry.. and you wouldn’t want to see me when I’m angry….GEARSDEN SMASH!

“Wonder Twins” Movie To Star Kutcher & Kunis?

Midtown Comics posted something unusual on their Tumblr on Thursday: A reasonably credible poster for a “Wonder Twins” movie featuring “Kunis” and “Kutcher” — former “That ’70s Show” co-stars and current celebrity couple Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher — with DC Comics and Warner Bros.logos, plus a date of 2014.

Wonder Twins Poster

Of course, quite a few things immediately seem wrong about that: such a project has never been reported to be in development, 2014 seems way too soon for a previously unheard of genre film to be released, major studio films aren’t generally announced by sending posters to comic book stores, and, oh yeah, a movie about the Wonder Twins — associated with an outdated, simplistic take on superheroes — starring Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher seems exactly like the kind of thing someone would make up to provoke a reaction among comic book fans. (For the unfamiliar, The Wonder Twins are alien siblings introduced as part of the ’70s “Super Friends” cartoon, and were integrated into DC Universe continuity in 1995 series “Extreme Justice.”)

So, yes, it appears this is a hoax, or viral marketing for something. But what, and by whom? Midtown followed up their initial post with a tweet purportedly showing the tube the poster arrived in, claiming it’s proof that it came from Warner Bros.:

Now, obviously that’s not necessarily proof the poster, or even the poster tube, came from Warner Bros. But presuming this isn’t Midtown pulling a prank on the geek world (though they did appear to enjoy the attention they’ve gotten for it thus far), the popular speculation seems to be that it’s viral marketing for the upcoming “Entourage” film, a Warner Bros. production. As io9 reasons, main character Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) starring in a fictional “Aquaman” film was a major part of the HBO show’s second and third seasons, so the movie might be returning to similar territory.

That also may not be quite right. The “Entourage” movie has only been official for less than three weeks, so it might be early for a viral marketing campaign, especially one that doesn’t overtly involve any of the property’s characters. Yet an “Entourage” film has been discussed since before the series ended in 2011, and a script was reported to be completed more than a year ago, so pre-production may be moving quickly.

The truth could be something deceptively simple — Kunis and Kutcher playing The Wonder Twins in a parody video? — or a total left turn — the work of a Banksy-esque conceptual artist? Either way, more is likely to come out about this sooner or later, and it’s probably premature to start camping out for opening night of “The Wonder Twins.”

JL8 Creator’s Original Art In Aid Of Typhoon Relief

Yale Stewart, creator of one of the web’s favourite comics, JL8, is raising money for victims of Super Typhoon Haiya in the Philippines with this background of a young Justice League showing up to help. It’s an inspiring image, and it’s already raised nearly $6,000 for UNICEF.

If you’re looking to help the background is being offered for a pay-what-you-want donation to UNICEF through Gumroad.com, and if you really want to help out the original art for the image is being auctioned off on eBay. The current bid is $600.

JL8 Typhoon Background Art by Yale Stewart

Geekosystem spoke to Stewart via email on Wednesday night about the effort:

“I know that if something were to happen here in St. Louis (my hometown and where I live), or America in general, I’d appreciate if the global community lent us a helping hand. To me, it just seems like the right thing to do. Really, what it boils down to is the fact that I’ve been incredibly fortunate with JL8, and it seems fairly hypocritical to write and draw stories about heroes (no matter how young) and not try to make an impact myself.”
Stewart has created similar images for other disasters including the Boston Marathon bombing.

Elk Vs Photographer – Cause Elks can be assholes too

0

A wildlife photographer was having a nice day, taking pictures in the Cataloochee Valley of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, when an adolescent Elk decides to fuck with his shit.

The surprising thing is,the Tog just takes it and at some points (point being the operative word)  is close to being skewered by the animals horns!

What does this teach us? Well, that it’s not just humans who can be assholes.

New Rumours about the upcoming Batman Vs Superman Film

0

batman_vs_superman-590x393

Some very interesting rumors from the guys at Comicbookmovie.com  regarding the up coming Batman vs Superman Film. Wonderwoman,  The Flash and a new spin on Lex Luther from previous films?

The Flash. Yes, he will be in the film, BUT as others have mentioned he will not be in costume for the movie. The Flash will only be seen as Barry Allen. Same goes for Wonder Woman. She will not be wearing her costume in this film, and will only be known as Diana. As you know, CW is developing a Flash television series that is a spinoff from Arrow. I’m told by my source that WB wants Grant Gustin to make the cameo as Barry Allen, BUT it all depends on how the audience reacts to him when he makes his debut on the small screen later this year. If sentiment is positive Gustin’s in, but if it’s negative they will find someone else for the Barry Allen/Flash cameo.

Last weekend, Zack Snyder dropped a few Batman Vs. Superman tidbits. The most pertinent, is when he said: “Lex (Luthor) loves calling him an alien.” Zack Snyder’s Lex Luthor isn’t gonna be focusing on real estate, like he has in past Superman films. This time, Lex’s motivations will be rooted on his belief that Superman is not good for mankind. The Lex that you will see, will resemble characteristics from Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman. The video below, includes a scene in which Lex explains to Clark Kent why Superman’s perfection diminishes his greatness. This is what you can expect from Zack Snyder’s Lex.

Alright, so he hates Superman for being a perfect alien, what else can you tell us hot shot? Well, my source describes Lex as “the pride of Metropolis. The people love him, he’s been helping out a lot. Even Lois thinks he’s a good guy initially. He is a very smart man and has a lot of charisma.” Wait, there’s more. Lex likes to dabble in “fringe” science. This is the side of him the people of Metropolis do not see. In one particular scene, Lex will ask his LexCorp scientists if they can recreate Kryptonian armor. Lex says to them, “When the world realizes what he truly is, they will need someone to stand up to him.” When one of scientists ask if he is that someone, Lex replies, “Is there any other person who can?”

Recently, Terry O’Quinn (“Lost”) was reported to be in the mix for Lex Luthor, but I’m told that he was never considered for the part at anytime. I can tell you, that James Purefroy, who is best known for playing a professor-turned-serial-killer in Fox’s The Following, was contacted about Lex Luthor, but wanted absolutely nothing to do with it.

Alright, let’s move on to other tidbits. We know that Bruce Wayne is getting a love interest in the film, but what you may not know is that WB really wants to cast an African-American actress for the part. I’m told by my source, that Ben Affleck will be reading with several actresses this very week to see if they have chemistry. This will be a committed relationship, not just a one night stand. It’s so serious, that she will know Bruce’s superhero identity.

All very intriguing I’m sure you will agree. but as the Flash is getting a TV series, a la Arrow, what about poor Wonder Woman; will she ever get another TV or film break?

What do you think? let us know in the comments below.

God of War: Ascension director quits Sony Santa Monica

God of War: Ascension Director leaving Sony
God of War: Ascension Director leaving Sony

Todd Papy, director of God of War: Ascension, has announced his departure from Sony via social media. Papy, who joined Sony Santa Monica in April 2003, promised his Twitter followers that he had not quit games altogether, but is heading to Germany, home to studios like Crytek and Bigpoint, though there is no news about who the God of War: Ascension director will be joining next.

Papy started his career in computer games in ’96 as a tester for Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey, before becoming an artist for Rush 2: Extreme Racing USA. However it wasn’t until 2005 where he got arguably his big break as a game designer for God Of War 1 & 2, before becoming the game director for Ascension.

It’s not too much of a setback for Sony Santa Monica however, as earlier this year, the studio announced that God of War 1 lead animator and God of War 2 game director Cory Barlog was returning to work on a secret new project. Rumours are rife about what this secret new project could be: many believe it to be another God of War game, whereas others seem to think a Mad Max game will soon be in development. Whatever it is, it’s sad that Papy won’t be seeing it through.

Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut (PC) Review

0

It isn’t all that unusual these days for a game to receive a mixed response but what is unusual is to find one that divides opinion as much as Deadly Premonition did when it was originally released as an Xbox 360 exclusive in the West three years ago.

While most reviewers at the time agreed that the game looked and played like utter shit, there was just something different about the story and original design that kept people hooked. A huge cult following was immediately born and after years of pleading for an official PS3 release in America and Europe, a Director’s Cut was eventually released on the console earlier this year with improved controls and visuals compared with the original version.

Deadly Premonition's combat is so clunky and simplistic that any attempts at suspense fall flat.
Deadly Premonition’s combat is so clunky and simplistic that any attempts at suspense fall flat.

At the same time as the PS3 release, developers Rising Star also took to Greenlight to appeal for support for a Windows version from the PC community. Naturally, Steam jumped on this and masses pledged their allegiance before waiting patiently for their chance to play one of the most controversial video games of the last decade on a well scheduled Halloween 2013 release date.

It’s perhaps unfortunate then that the final delivered product has turned to be one that not only disappoints but that actually manages to make a total mockery of the Greenlight system.

For the uninitiated, Deadly Premonition begins with FBI Special Agent Francis York Morgan en route to the quiet country backwater of Greenvale to investigate a homicide that bears a stark resemblance to an ongoing Federal serial murder investigation. After meeting some of the town’s more bizarre residents, Morgan leads the local police force in their efforts to bring the killer to justice, only to discover a complex web of murder spanning decades and the key to unlock secrets of his own past.

The game’s story is often compared with Twin Peaks and this has always been it’s most alluring feature. The bland textures and rigid animation are reminiscent of an early PS2 game and single handedly destroy any chances that the game ever has of creating believable horror or suspense. Likewise, the voice acting and dialogue are far more Barry Burton than Bioshock and it’s pretty much impossible to do anything when watching the cut scenes other than shake your head and laugh.

Controlling the game isn’t a particularly pleasant experience either and ranges from feeling slightly retro to like an all-out nightmare. Deadly Premonition has possibly the worst  map of any game that you will ever play and the York’s movement feels clunky and awkward, especially during combat. Where Deadly Premonition does shine however is in it’s original design concepts; Morgan needs food and sleep in order to function and players are encouraged to change clothes and shave if they want to remain popular with the locals of Greenvale. The original soundtrack is also one of the best of the last few years and does far more to emphasise the unique style and kookiness than the visuals ever could.

The game's adult story and quirky Twin Peaks vibe are easily the highlight.
The game’s adult story and quirky Twin Peaks vibe are easily the highlight.

Of course, all of these problems are to be expected from any port of Deadly Premonition and are generally accepted as part of it’s charm.  When Rising Star promised to bring the game to Windows they didn’t make any claims about fixing it since that would no doubt result in a very different experience.

Over time, the fan base had become used to the little quirks like ridiculously overpriced vending machines, wooden characters and a map that not even an orienteering expert would be able to understand.

What nobody could have anticipated however is that Rising Star would managed to break the game even further.

As a starting point, the PC version of the game is locked to 720p resolution and 30 frames per second on any machine regardless of specification or monitor. Community modders responsible for fixing similar problems with the PC port of Dark Souls last year were quick on the case and managed to patch these problems within 12 hours of release but that raises the question of why the official development team obviously couldn’t be bothered. Since the Steam page for the title was launched it has also promised controller support but unfortunately this is a bare arsed lie and in fact the game showed unplayable glitches when a controller was even connected during our review playthrough.

The sparse world of Greenvale and real-time clock system often leave you with nothing to do but look at the particularly uninspiring scenery.
The sparse world of Greenvale and real-time clock system often leave you with long periods of nothing to do but look at the particularly uninspiring scenery.

The result is that you end up playing a game that was originally designed for the Xbox 360 controller using a mouse and keyboard as the 360 controller support has basically been removed. This wouldn’t be so painful if there weren’t so many bugs but in fact I had to play the same sections of the game several times over due to crashes caused by accidentally moving the mouse at the wrong time during driving. The game froze whenever it was minimized to the task bar and certain enemies would glitch whenever they were on screen.

Shoddy ports are something that PC players have become used to in an age when most publishers see Windows as a secondary platform however there seems to be something particularly shady about this release. A title like this was never going to fail Greenlight leaving the cynic in me to wonder if taking the more indie approach to publication was likely just a marketing exercise to secure as many pre-orders as possible. Lead Director Swery65 (Hidetaka Suehiro) has since publicly apologised for the standard of this port and has vowed to patch at least some of the many problems but for those who pre-ordered that is definitely just too little, too late.

At £19.99/$24.99, Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut isn’t exactly cheap by today’s PC standards either which sadly leaves me with absolutely no reason to recommend this to anyone. If you played and loved one of the console versions then you’re probably going to be soured by the piss-poor quality of the port and anybody looking to experience the game for the first time will likely find far more enjoyment in the PS3 version.

By all means drink the coffee if you really want to but this is probably one that is better just left on the shelf.
