The BBC may be killing of our 11th Doctor this very day, but they have attempted to lighten our heavy hearts with the release of this Sherlock Holmes mini episode – ‘Many Happy Returns’. At just over 7 minutes I can assure you it is a must watch before series three premieres New Years day for the British viewers – sorry folks, it’s January 19th for our US viewers.
It has been two years since Sherlock’s death but someone is not so convinced the world’s greatest detective is dead and gone:
It’s Christmas and one of the best films to watch during this festive time is of course that seasonal classic Die Hard, as featured on our Top 5 alternative Christmas films. Let’s face it McClane gets beaten around a bit, leaps from explosions and I bet your wondering if you could survive the same action.
Well luckily for us the people of at Screen Junkies have asked an actual doctor and created Honest Action – Die Hard. What we get is a run down of all McClane’s injuries during some of the best fight scenes and the realisation that he should have died hard more than once (see what I did there).

Suda 51: Creator of No More Heroes and Lollipop Chainsaw
Goichi Suda, also known by his nickname Suda51, is the creator of cult titles such as No More Heroes and Killer 7. In his latest interview he argued it is too soon to judge the new Playstation 4 and Xbox One as platforms, and argued that it’s the games that are the most important thing. He also suggested during the interview that new developers should focus on building a portfolio of skills.
‘I guess what’s more important is the video game itself and not the platform it’s on, and I think it’s really important to be able to have the chance to play all kinds of different games – not just mega AAA titles but indie games too,‘ he said when asked to evaluate the new consoles by Expansive DLC.
‘If you think about it, a writer… they don’t really produce or create anything physical so I guess having a skill is good, so you can create something physical,‘ he explained. ‘The important thing is to contribute to the project and you know, how much you can contribute to the product, Having different skills are really good, I didn’t necessarily even have to write at the beginning but no one was writing so – I started writing. I also worked on designing some parts and so forth, so being able to contribute to a project with multiple skills is really good.‘
After a couple of days and a variety of sites telling us,it would seem that the i’s have been dotted and the t’s crossed. Marvel have finally confirmed that Paul Rudd is to play Ant-Man in the Edgar Wright directed 2015 release.
Known for his comedy roles in films such as Anchor Man, Role Models and This is 40 it would that the studio is very pleased with their pick:
[box_light]”When Edgar Wright came to us with the idea of Paul Rudd, we felt a huge sense of relief because the first step in creating any Marvel Studios film is finding the right star,” said Marvel’s Kevin Feige. “We knew early on that we had found the right person in Paul. When he not only agreed to do it but became as enthusiastic as any actor we’d ever met with about doing the work, we knew we’d found the right guy. We couldn’t be more excited for our audiences to see what he’s going to do to bring Ant-Man to life.” [/box_light]
As usual Marvel have given no more information so we still don’t know what version Ant-Man Rudd will be playing; are they sticking with Henry ‘Hank’ Pym, the original and creator of Ultron or Scott Lang, the thief who stole the suit to save his daughter? For now we can but wait and see what approach Marvel will take.
‘Tis the season to be jolly, blah blah blah and all the rest. Bah humbug. With the Christmas season well and truly upon us, full of painful reminders of just how close it is, how about a little festive spirit. That’s right, the time is nigh for the endless hoards of angry shoppers prepared to bash your brains in to get little Timmy the very last one of whatever stupid fad the kids are asking for this year. Not that I’m cynical or something. Honest.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy the occasional Christmas movie. Take Jingle All the Way for example, who doesn’t love Arnie as a stressed out parent who’s left his shopping until last minute and needs to get his hand on that one toy? I mean, that’s what Christmas is all about isn’t it?
I’ve found that this year I’m completely lacking the Christmas spirit. I’ve been pretty busy as of late, with moving house and becoming addicted with Boardwalk Empire and talking like a 1920s mob boss. Maybe it’s that, or the fact that whilst folk are opening presents and tucking into turkey, I’ll be working. Either way I thought it would be fun to run through the best alternative Christmas films to watch over the holiday season.
Before we begin, I’ll run through a few films that narrowly missed out on one of those sought after top five spots. There’s Lethal Weapon, because what’s more Christmassy than Mel Gibson and Danny Glover kick ass? Then there’s Elf, which can be seen as a little alternative but it’s still far too jolly for me. American Psycho does have a Christmassy tone and what would make a better sequel than a sort of mash-up between that and The Grinch? Imagine Patrick Bateman deciding to take on Christmas, replace that raincoat with a Santa suit and you’ve got a seriously sinister holiday adventure right there.
There’s also some great little horrors such as the Finnish Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale and the original Black Christmas that are worth a watch if you fancy giving that Christmas cheer a miss. Now, for our fabulous top five. These are in no particular order, because that just required too much thinking and some sort of reality TV talent show showdown weighing up the pros and cons between kicking ass and creepy carolling critters.
Batman Returns, 1992
I thought I’d get the list off to a start with my favourite caped crusader and Tim Burton’s first mention on the list. Burton’s Batman sequel is indeed a Christmas film, complete with a snowy Gotham and the warning of deadly misteltoe. The film introduces Michelle Pfeiffer’s iconic Catwoman costume and Danny DeVito’s rather creepy Penguin. Batman Returns is definitely a fun alternative Christmas film for us geeks.
Die Hard, 1988
Looking for an action blockbuster this Christmas? John McClane will sort you out, with the assistance of terrorist attacks and machine guns. There’s nothing more festive than Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman battling it out at a Christmas party. There’s even a chick named Holly. Die Hard always seems to be on at some point during the holiday season, so you’ve got no excuse to miss out on this awesome action-packed Christmas hit.
Gremlins, 1984
How about some Christmas creepiness now and something to make you reconsider asking for a pet this Christmas. This 80s horror-comedy surely deserves a spot on the list as one of the most bizarre yet memorable festive films around. Also, it’s got carolling gremlins. What’s not to love?
Edward Scissorhands, 1990
That’s right folks, more Burton with another example of his beautifully gothic snowy settings. The film kicks off with an elderly lady telling her granddaughter a tale about where snow comes from and the climax of the plot is based around Christmas as well. Johnny Depp’s Edward is charmingly awkward and it really is a great cult classic. Edward Scissorhands is without a doubt one of my favourite Christmassy films and I really do adore Tim Burton’s use of snow in his gothic settings.
The Nightmare Before Christmas, 1993
Finally, it’s the most popular alt Christmas hit that’s the most festive flick you can get away with watching once it hits October. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a pretty obvious choice, but it’s a well-established classic that strays pretty far from the the goings on of 34th Street. Now, this top five may seem a little Tim Burton-tastic, but people tend to forget that master of gothic cinema didn’t actually direct this one. Based on Tim Burton’s story, Henry Selick managed to create a timeless classic complete with all kinds of nightmare nasties, whilst still retaining plenty of Christmas spirit. With that, The Nightmare Before Christmas finishes off my list, taking it’s unquestionable spot as my all time favourite Christmas film.
Now here’s some carolling gremlins for you to enjoy. Happy holidays!
Rejoice! Nintendo have announced a new Zelda game during the Nintendo Direct hosted on the 18th December but, using the words of the great Ben Kenobi, “This is not the Zelda game you are looking for.” (Close enough!)
Hyrule Warriors (working title) has been announced for the Wii U, releasing around Spring 2014, being developed by the talented bunch at Tecmo Koei, known for creating the Dynasty Warriors franchise. Whilst no other details were given, a short trailer was shown alongside the reveal, presenting a fast, fluid combat system incorporating a multitude of weapons, including bombs, bow and (gasp) the fire staff. The trailer can be viewed below:
Now, this is where the fun speculation begins. For the most part, the enemies shown here, such as the Bokoblins and the Lizalfos, use exactly the same models as their Skyward Sword counterparts. Whilst Skyward sword is the origins story, a small Manga piece was included within the Hyrule Historia (incidentally Amazon’s 6th best selling printed book throughout 2013), showing the original Link (the one before Skyward Sword) fighting an army on the ground. This Link had sections of armor alongside the iconic Green garb, as well as a blue cloak flowing majestically behind him. In contrast, the Link shown throughout the contrast has less armor, but still enough to be note worthy, and a flowing blue sash, as opposed to a full on cloak. So, to summarise: Is this game showing the start of the war which was eventually lost, ending in the creation of Skyloft and the death of Link? Whilst this is just speculation, if these theories are true, would Nintendo trust Tecmo Koei enough to give the prequel to Skyward Sword justice?
An interesting theory but what do you think? Comments below!
When I first started this site, two and a bit years ago, I never dreamed that it would grow (and continue to grow) into what it is today. I therefore put little thought into having as the Geek Pride logo, a Space Invader (for those who can remember). It’s an iconic symbol within geek culture and therefore a no brainer. “We will never be big enough for Square Enix / Taito to have issue with this.” I thought…… well it seems I was wrong and we have ruffled a few feathers now.
AND MAN ARE WE STOKED!
Yeah thats right, most people would be mortified to get a Cease and Desist from the legal team of a huge company but not here at Geek Pride, no sir. Firstly, and most simply, because we changed our logo in the summer, I just forgot to take the banner down from the website and change the favicon(FAIL!); and Secondly, because getting a letter like this made us feel slightly warm and fuzzy inside, as if one of the founding geek creators had reached out and touched us mere mortals. ****awwwww eehh awwwwww***
Sure it’s a CaD but it is also something else. We would never have gotten it had we not been a growing site and that makes us feel good. If we are big enough now to ruffle feathers, then that means we must be doing something right… Thanks Square Enix, it might be weird but you made our day!
All offending material removed ( I hope) Check out the CaD below:
Right off the bat, I’d just like to say that myself and Young Nicholas were overwhelmed with your input last week and can only promise that A) the sound quality gets better and B) We will get better (just don’t leave, we can change!).
Moving into 2014, we want to know this : what do YOU want to hear from a beardy white guy and his emaciated Link lookalike buddy? let us know, we love you, and your input. all over our face, neck and chest. Tasty.
A few weeks ago, we looked at Next Gen (Current Gen) Consoles, and Nick got called out on his UNHOLY amount of cuddly toys. Remember, if you like what you hear, or don’t, tag #TalkieTuesdays or #MNGC and we’ll come find you.And yer mums.
I’ve already mentioned that Willem Samuel has brought to life his experiences growing up in South Africa, using his skill as an artist to put into images and words how the world was slowly changing around him. I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy of the comic that will hit the shelves in February, 2014 and I have to say I was quite impressed.
The first part of six to be released deals with his experiences a seventh grader and what I found quite interesting is that while he’s a grown man at this time he doesn’t embellish his experience. It might be a story that deals with the changes that had occurred in South Africa and its effects, but very few kids of 13-14 are concerned with politics, economy or the social moves that affect the world surrounding them. Samuel captures perfectly that sort of rash innocence that allows for kids to live in a world to which they are very little attuned with, outside their immediate existence. He presents us with a realistic teenager, whose biggest concerns are pimples, popularity, girls and whose biggest problems come from being caught smoking in his room.
It is hilariously portrayed, even though I imagine it would seem not quite as funny for anyone living through the events. His inner thoughts create an entirely different world, one we’re privy too, but one that everyone else can’t see, a world where Judge Dredd can come and give him a ride to school, one where he can change what’s been said and done, cleaning up the messes he’s created, whether by accident or by design.
The main character is essentially a dreamer, a boy that wants something that he can’t have anywhere else outside of his head and it’s why the comic works so well, because, aside from portraying a world that’s so little known for the vast majority of the people living outside it, it also deals with certain issues that we’ve all bumped into at least once in our lives: having a bad day from start to finish, getting in trouble and feeling wronged – the list can go on.
All in all, I can’t say anything other than you should get it, read it and anxiously wait for the second part, which will lead us to an entirely different stage of the character’s life. Oh and did I mention the art looks amazing? No? I probably should’ve started with that.
*Many thanks to Nora Golberg from Soaring Penguin Press for pointing us towards this brand new comic.
