Walking Dead Season 5 Teaser

0

The first teaser trailer for season five of The Walking Dead has hit the web following a summer preview episode of The Talking Dead. The season four finale left much of the gang trapped in the creepy lie of a safe-haven that was Terminus. However, Carol and Tyreese, along with Baby Judith, were still trailing behind.

The first look at the new season shows the duo and the Little Ass Kicker on the run from plenty of hungry zombies. Omm nomm. It’s a pretty lack lustre trailer, but hopefully we will be given a little more to get our teeth into over the coming months. The next season is set to hit our screens in October, so check out the teaser for a taste of what’s to come. Let’s hope there’s more. Much, much, more.

Brandon Routh Cast as Ray Palmer aka The Atom for Arrow Season 3

Brandon Routh in Superman Returns

Former Superman, Brandon Routh is to to join CW’s hit superhero show, Arrow for it’s third season. Routh is set to play Ray Palmer, scientist and inventor rumoured to be the new owner of Queen Consolidated and someone who will have an unexpected role in the lives of Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak. Palmer’s plans for the Applied Sciences Division will be shrouded in mystery.

Comic fans will know Palmer better as The Atom, a physics professor who develops equipment to shrink himself to subatomic levels using white dwarf star material. That Atom has been around in DC Comics since the golden age with Ray Palmer being the second incarnation to take the name. Whether the character is going to be donning the full blue and red suit, we don’t yet know, but CW don’t seem to shy away from doing the ‘spandex’ look, as confirmed by making Flash wear the full costume including the lightening ears.

Brandon Routh played Superman in the unfortunately bad and often mocked film, Superman Returns, making this role the second DC hero he has taken on. Routh has also had a number of smaller roles including Daniel Shaw in 12 episodes of Chuck and the third evil ex in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. We’re told Routh will play the role as a recurring guest in 14 episodes and may be a love interest for Felicity.

Are people excited about this addition? Do you want to see the red and blue spandex? Are there any other heroes you want to see make an appearance in Arrow? Comment below, we’d love to know what you think.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection new trailer is voiced by the Arbiter

0

A new trailer has been shown from RTX 2014, voiced by none other than the Arbiter, Master Chief’s covenant ‘friend’.

The trailer, entitled ‘Terminal’, raises questions over the interesting dynamic and complicated relationship between Petty Officer John-117 and the disgraced Alien, and thus makes the wait just that bit more agonising.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is released on November 11th 2014 for the Xbox One, and features Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 Anniversary (announced alongside the collection), Halo 3 and Halo 4. It will also feature over 100 multiplayer maps so you can slay and/or teabag to your hearts content. Additional content will include Halo: Nightfall, an original live-action digital series directed by Ridley Scott that will eventually lead into Halo 5: Guardians.

Star Wars: Edge of the Empire

Edge of the Empire Rulebook
Edge of the Empire Rulebook

Star Wars: Edge of the Empire is a roleplay system by Fantasy Flight Games that invites you and your friends to live out adventures from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Set around the time of the destruction of Alderaan, you play as shady scoundrels, smugglers and bounty hunters working on the outer-rim of the galaxy attempting to evade the iron grip of empire. Fantasy Flight have entrenched the setting well and truly in the dark times of the Galaxy, giving only passing mention to any events set before the original trilogy. This gives the game a much clearer focus than previous roleplay games set in the Star Wars Universe and allows the writers to stuff the beautifully presented 440+ page rulebook full of story ideas, fluff and (best of all) a genuinely exciting character creation system.

The basic mechanics of Edge of the Empire will be familiar to any role-player worth their salt. You build a dice pool based on your skills and attributes to complete a task. Easy, yes? This is probably as similar as the system gets to other games. Fantasy Flight uses custom dice, covered in custom symbols that help decide if the characters have failed, succeeded or somehow have done both at the same time. The different shapes and sizes of dice all have a different ratios of symbols that can help determine success of failure of a task. The core dice you will use are the green ‘Ability’ dice and the yellow ‘Proficiency’ dice. These have negative counterparts called Difficulty and Challenge dice. Your skills, attributes and surroundings will all determine how many dice you have in each pool. Each success rolled can be cancelled out by each failure. If you have one success remaining, you pass the check. There are symbols that represent threats and advantages as well, which give the GM AND player a chance to flex their storytelling muscle by creating unique story driven situations based around these results. The player could succeed at hacking in to the Gungan crime lord’s data terminal to get the name of the Bounty Hunter tracking them, but as they have rolled a threat it could trigger a silent alarm, alerting security to the players location. It’s a fun system that really keeps you thinking as a GM.

The custom dice needed to play Edge of the Empire do not come included with the core rulebook, which is disappointing as they are included in the rules light Beginners Boxset, and when you are playing nearly £40 for a rulebook, it feels like these should be included. There is an Enigma Code like conversion chart in the book for using standard dice, which is okay but it will take you longer to work out the outcome of a check and can really slow a game down. The custom dice will set you back around £10 from your local game store. There is also an app that you can download for smartphones and tablets.

There is a distinct lack of species open to players in the core rules, with only 8 species available including Droids. This is compensated for by a unique occupation tree that gives each of the six defined roles around three different paths each. You can be a smuggler pilot, scoundrel or thief and each one opens up a string of unique abilities that you can purchase as you level up. You also get to choose Obligations and Relationships that give you extra experience points to build, but also gives the GM some complications to throw at your characters. Droids don’t seem to have been given the attention that they deserve for a starting species, and having a droid player feels like it would be a hindrance to a smaller group. It is a role that should be used as an NPC or for the occasional drop in-drop out player. You will also notice that there is a lack of the force in this book. Being set during the events of the original trilogy, playing a Jedi isn’t an option that is really open to players. There is the option to be force sensitive and have some abilities, but the system really tries to guide you away from the force entirely and I think it’s all the better for it. Having a team of Jedi roaming the Galaxy whilst the Battle of Yavin rages on would really take away from the tone that Fantasy Flight have worked really hard to set.

The Star Wars universe is so large and diverse that other systems have tripped over themselves to give you the opportunity to play in any era and as any possible race and allowing players to wield force powers relentlessly. Edge of the Empire strips all of this away, almost forcing you down the path of scum and villany and strangely this makes it feel like the most wide open version of Star Wars roleplaying to date.

The New Doctor

While we anxiously await the season premier (Saturday, August 23rd on BBC America, BBC One, and Space Channel), the powers-that-be have granted us a new trailer, in which we get a nice view inside Twelve (in case you were wondering what a Timelord’s insides look like). Who’s that in the menacing voiceover? We’ve got some guesses, but we’ll have to wait to find out.

Geek Pride Comic Blog – 05/07/2014 – Totes Emosh Edition

Greetings, Programs! We asked the guys to do something a little bit different this week, to talk about comics that moved them emotionally. We want to hear about stories or images that have stayed with you too long after you closed the book and still give you a lump in your throat. Tell us about them in the comments or on Facebook!

75af19507d6f127e4a454a7693b09b5e

BF: All Star Superman – in which Supes takes a moment out of his day saving the universe to hug a young girl contemplating suicide.

tumblr_lckmainUJ61qad1xw

CAB: Death Note, L’s death. I’m still not over that, even if I am a Near fan.

Batman-and-Robin.-Orphans

BF: Tim Drake’s dad’s death in Identity Crisis. Oh, the look on his face over Batman’s protective arm is heartbreaking.

tumblr_n78h9sjqYC1r00lgio1_500

CAB: Oh, how about the whole storyline between Stanley Manor (not calling him S.W. on principle) and John Constantine? I might have to binge on Hellblazer again, cause I’m sure there’s more to be found there, but that really hit me hard (and no, I’m not a shipper). I know it might seem like an odd choice, but…eh, I’m nothing if not odd.

11900076073_f7b1978304

LMS: Pre-New 52, when Catwoman had to give up her daughter Helena, after trying EVERYTHING to protect her whilst still keeping her close. And then she’s just sitting on the top on the Gotham clocktower, getting shitfaced on whiskey and telling Zatanna to please, just go into her mind and make her a villain again, because she can’t do this anymore. All of the feels.

rover-red-charlie-header

LMS: Also, and it’s a little obscure so feel free to leave it out- the end of Rover Red Charlie, I’m not even going to lie, I had people round and I still burst into big fat tears. It’s been out for a month or so, so I’m gonna forge ahead with spoilers but if you’re bothered about spoilers then

HERE BE SPOILERS

OK, so all through the book Charlie the narrator-dog has been saying “That’s how I’ll always remember Red. The big, dumb idiot.” so you’re pretty sure Red’s gonna bite it. So, final issue, big bad doggernaut Hermann returns, a vicious fight ensues, and Red does his best to take down the much bigger dog… who rips off his leg. Charlie and Rover run to his side, but are too late to stop him walking towards the big bright light. Cut to a short while later, and Red’s pups (who he fathered in issue 5) are gleefully charging up a hill, with a puppyish joy that brings the happy tears.

BUT IT DOESN’T END THERE.

They reach the top of the hill, all puppyish and bouncy, and at the top RED IS STANDING THERE. Three-legged, sure, but still alive, and I just couldn’t carry on.

HERE ENDETH THE SPOILERS.

Porcelain_01_Lett_001

CAB: You know what also gets me?

*Spoiler alert!*

There’s this comic called Porcelain in which an orphan girl, aptly called “Child” ends up being taken in by a man that everyone thought slightly strange. Life is perfect, but as we always know, nothing good ever lasts, so she ends up losing him through some horrible happenings and slowly turns into him (behaviour wise, she does not in fact turn into a fat man). I can’t wait for the sequel, because the first story was fantastic. But the way things are set up in that first comic? I didn’t cry, but it did make me very angry, which is the same as sadness, but more passionate.

rorsh-compromise

MO: For me there are two huge moments that helped shape who I am and how I think. During the final act of Watchmen Rorschach is adamant that he is going to expose Veidt, despite the implications. The deontology of the character is what drew me to Rorschach: A man adherent to his own moral compass, in the endless pursuit of right, no matter what. As he walks off into the snow, about to face off with Dr Manhattan, He explains to Nite Owl that there can be no compromise “Even in the face of Armageddon”. That absolute resolve spoke to the (then) depressed and suicidal Mike Orvis more so than friends and family could’ve. I have Rorschach’s symbol tattooed on my wrist as a constant reminder to not stray from my own set of guidelines, and to keep my resolve even in the face of insurmountable odds. It’s a little harder in practice, especially if Ice cream is involved.

scan0004

MO: Another that burned into my head was the image of Superman post-nuclear bomb incident in The Dark Knight Rises. Seeing one of the most powerful beings in pop culture history reduced to an emancipated wreck just shattered my ideas about power. This was underpinned by Miller’s art style. It reminded me that even the bullies at school, who seemed 10 feet high were just human beings. It to this day is in my opinion one of the most humbling images in art history, let alone sequential art.

we3 - de co mish

AH: Pretty much the whole of Grant Morrison’s WE3, it sharp and finely honed like a katana and really cuts deep.

MS: Some full on feels right there. Its fluffy animals so it felt a bit cheap but it was so good.

Bishoujo_Senshi_Sailormoon_v01ch06_p37

CAB: On a happier note, I really loved Sailor Moon’s (the very first arc) ending. Because after putting everyone through miserable situations it ends with something good, she ends up happy with Mamoru, the Senshi’s are all fine and for a few pages we could all take a deep breath and fangirl in peace.  Of course, Chibiusa drops out of the sky afterwards, but meh, we still had the happy times!

tumblr_mwk8y8GNJn1qapz3uo4_r1_500

RJ: Everything about Dean Trippe’s Something Terrible.

MO: THIS THIS ^^^^^^^^^

CAB: Oh, damn. I read Something Terrible too.

MO: Stop it

CAB: Richie, this is cruel. But admittedly, that comic has helped a lot of people and deserves an award.

MO: Oh God ;'(

RJ: Seriously if you haven’t read it you need to. If it doesn’t move you to tears, heavy salty, from the bottom of your heart tears, then you have no soul. Mr Trippe is a real life superhero.

Batman_Under_the_Hood

CT: These are some bloody hardcore feel bombs. One of the big ones for me was actually the appearance of Red Hood, can’t remember the name of the actual story. I know I quite often talk about how much I love Jason Todd but seeing him come back to Gotham post-resurrection on this big revenge spree was so epic. But it was when he goes after the Joker and Batman has to put down this guy who’s basically his son to stop him from killing the most vile psychopath, who’s caused him so much pain, that was huge. Very much like Mike’s Rorschach moment it was just that uncompromising stand for his code.l Also, that moment contained Batman beating all odds to save both Jason and Joker despite having near zero options which was pretty incredible.

More fun and games next week, but in the meantime check out more from today’s contributors here:

Top 5 TV Theme Songs From the 60’s

Over the next few weeks I shall be bringing you my picks of the top TV theme tunes from the last few decades. TV theme tunes have evolved greatly over the years and we are reaching a point where opening credits are becoming shorter, so when opening credits to shows like Game of Thrones begin, whilst an impressive ensemble musically and visually, part of my brain is shouting “c’mon already, I need to see what happens”. Alas, that is the nature of the modern day, where everything is instantly accessible we are losing the virtue of patience. So let us take some time to appreciate the theme songs of eras gone by, music that can still make you smile and evoke memories of your childhood, and comfort you like a hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day.

I shall begin with the 1960’s, and whilst I wasn’t born until the late 70’s, back in my youth we had three channels and a lot of the time they aired gems of an earlier period. Many of the themes from this era fall under the description of catchy and upbeat, and I guarantee you will walk away from this article with at least one of them stuck in your head.

Batman

This show not only made Adam West the pop culture icon and legend he is today, but a theme song consisting of just nanananana Batman, has become so well known that you can find many a meme and merchandise still featuring the lyrics. It has evolved into a modern day folk song passed down to generation after generation, becoming so well known that the youth of today will sing it without ever having seen the show from which it originated. That makes this theme a true gem and an important part of this history of Batman.

Addams Family

“They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re all together ooky, The Addams Family.” I love a theme song that rhymes and yes I am easily pleased. I also believe it deserves credit because this particular theme comes with it’s own actions, okay, one action, and that’s clicking your fingers, but still..it’s fun.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YFk4b6yeX4&feature=youtu.be

Thunderbirds

This theme was composed by Barry Gray, who was well known in the industry of the time for requiring large ensembles of musicians to create his compositions, something of a rarity back in the day. Thunderbirds is show about heroes on a large scale, a secret organisation dedicated to saving human life, such a show deserved a noble and rousing theme and that is just what it got.

Twilight Zone

Dah-dee-dah-dah, Dah-dee-dah-dah, I say it all the time, when the electricity goes off, when something creepy happens, even when I’m watching other TV shows; that is how well embedded into our culture this theme is. The piece certainly doesn’t fall in the catchy description, it is a creepy composition that utilises discordant sounds to disturb the brain and put it on edge to create a suitably dramatic build up, the perfect introduction for the show.

Doctor Who

Do I really need to say anything about why this belongs on this list? It is a classic that, though reworked over five decades, remains one of the most easily identifiable pieces of music. It was an arduous task to create an electronic futuristic sound in the days before commercial synthesisers, it basically involved a lot of cutting and sticking of analogue tapes, some white noise that then had to be mixed. But there was no such thing as multi track tape machines so it came done to everyone pressing play at precisely the same time. The hard work paid off as the Doctor Who theme can confidently declare itself as the mother of all sci-fi tracks.

Bonus track – Benny Hill

I’ve included this just because it is frequently used in many a youtube video, tv sitcom and advertising and is definitely one of the catchiest theme tunes you will ever encounter (my daughters has been humming it for about an hour after just one quick burst from my laptop) – enjoy.
