Rememblog #1: How Buffy The Vampire Slayer Made Me Cry

Hello and welcome to a brand new blog series, we’re tentatively calling the Rememblog. There’s a lot of great geekery that’s come out over the years and Geek Pride has had the chance to cover a good chunk of it in recent years. But there’s a metric ton of stuff that occurred before we were around to talk about it and so, in this blog, we’re going to be looking back on all the things that got us going before Geek Pride was around for us to write about it. And first up, I’m here to unashamedly confess that Buffy the Vampire Slayer made me break down and cry.

WARNING: SPOILERS TO FOLLOW

Now, in fairness, Buffy is a reasonably old show now so it may seem silly to put a spoiler warning on it but I must admit that it was only recently that I watched the whole way through the series. I received the first season as a present a couple of years ago and loved it but completely failed to follow up on the rest of the show. Aided by some friends who’d seen it all and one who hadn’t seen any of it however, my interest was reignited and we got through two and a half season together. I then took it upon myself to binge watch the remaining three and a half seasons this summer and I have to say, it is one of the best decisions I ever made.

Season 5, Episode 16: ‘The Body’. This was the moment that Joss Whedon decided to beat my emotional wellbeing to breaking point. The first three seasons of Buffy are great but it’s from season 4 onwards that things really kick into high gear. Both the story and the characters find whole new life and so, when you hit the intense episodes of the show, they hit hard. And having been intensively binge watching the show, I was about as close to the characters as I could get at that point. So, obviously, Joss Whedon decided to kill one of them. Namely, Joyce Summers, Buffy’s mum. Brilliantly portrayed by Kristine Sutherland throughout the show, Joyce had been a grounding presence that didn’t care about Buffy being the Slayer but just wanted the best for her daughter. Earlier in the season we’d seen her hospitalised and struggled with Buffy having to come to terms with the fact that this was a natural, medical enemy that she couldn’t fight. But then, joy of joys! Joyce was surgically cured and all was right with the world. And then, in episode 16, Buffy comes home to find her mum dead. And as she cracked, so did I.

There’s a lot of crap in our culture about masculinity and femininity that somehow means that men should be incredibly limited on their crying. Men have to be stoic at all times and unfeeling so the weak women folk can simper and weep on their broad shoulders. Massively screw that. There is some awful tropes to grief in TV and film and while it is often done as well as it is badly, ‘The Body’ is the most honest and pure expression of grief and loss that I’ve ever seen. The episode shows everything from straight up shock with Buffy:

Body-cap006

To Xander’s rage at the sheer futility of their position. They’ve saved the world countless times but they can’t save their own.

Body-cap011

And finally, Willow. Who can’t help but fixate on the smallest of things just because the big thing is too damn big.

tumblr_mpuk7s5lzd1qke0qzo2_1280

You’ll notice that I didn’t caption those picture. Honestly, I don’t feel they need captioning. I imagine there’ll be a fair few who maybe don’t get much from those shots. But anybody who’s seen the episode, I hope those will be enough to serve as a reminder of the moments they’re drawn from. Because ‘The Body’ didn’t hold back. Joss Whedon and the entire team behind Buffy delivered up something that you just don’t get in many TV shows. It was an episode of the purest, most devastating emotions. Sure there was a vampire to kill, to remind us of Buffy’s duty and show that there’s still monsters to fight. But the real monster in the episode, and one that would shadow many moments for the rest of the show, was death. Not that we see in the undeath of the vampires that plague Sunnydale but the simple, unassailable force that comes to us all, that of mortal death.

Season 5 came to a close with Buffy sacrificing herself to save her sister and left Dawn with these words. “The hardest thing to do in this world is live in it. Be brave. Live.” Truer words never spoken. The emotional gut-punch came not from the direct event of seeing Joyce dead, horrible as that was, but seeing the consequences on those close to her. It was genuinely heartbreaking to watch the characters I had quickly come to love go through a pain I can’t even bring myself to imagine, made all the worse for the fact that, up to now, they’ve always won. Sure, there’d been some loss and at the time in the series, there was no indicator as to how they were going to beat Glory, the season’s Big Bad. But there was no doubt they would. Joyce though… Of all the people the Scooby Gang had saved, they couldn’t save Buffy’s mum. That is a cut that runs deep.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of the best series ever and, in ‘The Body’, Joss Whedon and co. created something truly amazing. I am not ashamed to admit they made me cry because if you can honestly watch through the show up that point and then stare Sarah Michelle Gellar in the eye as she has to find her mother dead, then you are made of much sterner stuff than I. The acting, the writing, the directing, everything about it is on top form. Geek Pride may not have been around to talk about it at the time but by all that is Whedon I will forever uphold Buffy as among the pinnacle of television’s vast pantheon. And now, with manly tears on my cheek, I shall leave you.

Thanks for reading. We’ll be back sometime soon with more nostalgic hindsight.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory gets a new cover!

0

That scared the crap out of me and now I might need therapy for the foreseeable future. For the 50th anniversary of the children’s classic, Penguin chose a new cover. One that actually made my blood run cold, the fear gripping me like a vice as I scrambled for ways to break away from the cold, calculated gaze of the obviously murderous child featured on the cover.

Is it too early in the day to call for the Exorcist?
Is it too early in the day to call for the Exorcist?

While I am sure the intention behind this was good, and here you have it in the words of the Penguin editors,

Publishing for the first time as a Penguin Modern Classic, this design is in recognition of the book’s extraordinary cultural impact and is one of the few children’s books to be featured in the Penguin Modern Classics list.

This new image for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory looks at the children at the centre of the story, and highlights the way Roald Dahl’s writing manages to embrace both the light and the dark aspects of life, ready for Charlie’s debut amongst the adult titles in the Penguin Modern Classics series.

the execution fell rather flat. There is nothing stopping a less creepy cover from attracting both children and adults. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has been around for five decades, I’m sure it’s already a staple of literature, without adding this particular kind of controversy, in order to get some cheap publicity. To be honest, if I were to have to buy this book for a child, I would do my best to find one featuring one of the old covers.

See? Zero creepy factor. Why would I want to traumatize some young child with a book cover that looks like it was ripped from some ’60s horror film featuring more than one murderous child? The book already features enough of life’s darker aspects, without adding this to the mix. But that’s just me.

Aww, a nice old man, a golden ticket and candy strewn around?! Take my money!
Aww, a nice old man, a golden ticket and candy strewn around?! Take my money!

I suppose it really is an easy way of gaining publicity. Odds are that they will change the cover at the last moment, but hey, they already created the buzz, now people will spend their time discussing what has been done and there’s no bad publicity, right? I suppose we’ll see in about a month’s time how the final product will look like and if parents will have to shield their children’s eyes when they go past the particular section in the bookstore that this one will be featured in. In the meanwhile we’ll keep an ear out and let you guys know of any new developments. (As long as it doesn’t involve me looking at that picture for too long, it creeps me out.)

GISHWHES came and went…

…taking my sanity with it. For those of you who aren’t in the know, GISHWHES is the acronym for: Greatest International Scavenger Hunt The World Has Ever Seen. It really rolls of the tongue, doesn’t it? If you’re still confused, here’s a little bit of history. A few years back, Misha Collins (best known for his role as the angel Castiel in Supernatural) decided to help those in Haiti, heavily hit by earthquakes and tsunamis. Most (normal) people tend to start off a charity, smile, take a few pictures, maybe even auction themselves in order to gather up money. In that case things are pretty straight forward. We all sit at home, wire the money to the charity of our choosing and bam! our good deed for the year is done.

Except Misha took it one step further. Giving money was only the first step. Why retain your sanity and your comfort, when you can go out, dressed in bacon? Or cover yourself in peanut butter and offer free hugs? To be honest, there were times when I was looking over the list of items and I found myself thinking that he was some insane puppet master, sitting on a throne and cackling madly, envisioning the mayhem that would ensue, but ultimately I don’t think I met one single person left miserable at the end of it. A lot of the items require

The proof that unicrons do fart rainbows.
The proof that unicrons do fart rainbows.

those participating to go out into the world and make a random act of kindness: talking to an elderly person, helping someone in need, registering to become a donor. When you think about it, it’s quite simple, yet not a lot of people wake up in the morning thinking: Oh, I’m going to do something different today! I’m going to give something of myself to someone that needs it, however small. Of course, along side those are the items about farting unicorns…

Okay, I admit (as most of those that have seen my Facebook posts about it could attest) I was frustrated a lot of the time, because I felt I was failing my team – did I forgot to mention I joined this year? – but when it was all over, I was happy that I got to meet a group of amazingly talented people, also kinda crazy (but who cares about that?), and I got to have fun, however short lived my experience this year was.

With five world records under our belts (yes, I have the papers to prove it!) and with another potentially on the way, with participants from over 130 countries and enough insanity to go around, GISHWHES has proven itself to be quite a successful experiment. Perhaps people would be more willing to pony up for those in need if they were asked to take action instead of simply waiting for things to happen to tumblr_na2ukdL1zT1sawbluo1_1280 (1)them. From getting pampered at a spa while dressed as a Stormtrooper to designing a heroic captain Picard out of condiments, the sky was the limit. But we did it. Hey, he got William Shatner to join a team so…he’s pretty persuasive.

If you’re not convinced that you should join up next year…I must have forgotten to mention the prize at the end! A three day trip to a location of Misha’s choosing for the winning team. This year it’s Dubrovnik, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Still, somehow, even those that won’t win won’t feel like losers. You would’ve done something that pushed you beyond your limits and while your actions might seem small, every act of random kindness matter. Remember how you like it when someone gives you a smile? It’s just like that.

For more, less subjective, information, please visit GISHWHES  and think about what you could do to help out someone other than yourself. (Nothing wrong with looking after number one, don’t get me wrong, but every now and again it feels nice to help a little old lady across the street). What’s more important, you don’t even have to sign up for the next hunt in order to do it. (But it’s a great way to justify crazy actions, remember that.)

Look at this! Matt even had a helping hand in it!
Look at this! Matt even had a helping hand in it.

And look, we even got a best-selling author, David Mack, to help us out with one item: a dramatic rendition of  a section of the California Driver’s Handbook.

Gloom – The Card Game

0

When I first saw Gloom years ago it never appealed to me, but as age and general misery now follow me around, I thought I’d give it a go.  When I opened the pack I was shocked to find transparent cards, which is (honestly) the first time I had ever touched such things, but it makes the game look really cool (No; you can’t see what your opponents got).

Gloom - Happy Card Game
Gloom – Happy Card Game

The games basic goal is to make your five member family, of which there are four to choose, as miserable as they can be and then kill them.  Each negative, or positive, pathos point builds up, but only counts when your family member dies.  The family with the lowest pathos amount when the game, finally, ends wins.  Living members don’t count, so its important that yours are dead first, as when a total family member is dead, the game is over.

Transparent cards!
Transparent cards!

This game is currently designed for between two & four players, and due to the number of varying methods of winning, each game is unique.  What makes this game more interesting is the storytelling aspect, which creates a new dimension with Gloom.  Rather than just playing a card, each one has a differing title, and no two cards are the same.  So one minute your madly in love and the next you’ve been mauled by a creature, this is done with the idea of creating a story.  You can either play it as a standard game, or create an interesting and funny story as you go along.

Three of the additional decks available.
Three of the additional decks available.

It is a simple game, so far each time I have played it no game has taken more than thirty minutes from start to finish.  However with four expansions for Gloom alone (one of which I own) and a Cthulhu version with a single expansion, there are plenty of extras to make this game last longer, both in individual game length, and shelf life.

A great little game, especially around the halloween time of year, or for those who want something different and a little grizzly.

X-Wing Miniatures: Imperial Aces

0

I recently picked up the X-Wing Miniatures Game, and as per Popeoldhams review, I agree whole heartedly with Pope’s assessment.  However I am going to take a look at the first Ace’s box set to be released, the Imperial Aces.

Imperial Aces Box Set
Imperial Aces Box Set

Firstly the models are amazing, perfectly cast and painted superbly.  Two Tie Interceptors, one from the Imperial Royal Guard and the other from the elite Sabre Squadron.  Of course within the box you get loads of card tokens, including extra numbering tokens, focus, evade etc.  Character wise you get four basic pilots, two Royal Guards and two Sabre Squadron and then four other characters.  Carnor Jax and Kir Kanos both fly the symbolic Red Interceptor, whilst Tetran Cowall and Lieutenant Lorrir fly the Sabre Squadron Interceptor (Red stripe down the side; it doesn’t go faster).

Four Interceptors, two of them from Imperial Aces.
Four Interceptors, two of them from Imperial Aces.

Carnor Jax is a ship nullifier, as his ability stops any enemy ship with range performing actions.  This is a great ability, but unless you’re on someone’s tail, it can be a costly one.  Kir Kanos allows you to punish your opponent for you being cautious, turning an evade into an extra hit.  Both these are pretty brutal, but considering the lack of shields on them, you may wish to go for a cheaper option.  Tetran Cowell has the annoying ability to perform koiogran turns at 1, 3 and 5 speed, meaning he can just turn on a dime.  Tough to tie down (see what I did there), but again the lack of shields on Interceptors makes them quite vulnerable.  Finally Lieutenant Lorrir is another nimble Interceptor pilot, allowing you to do barrel rolls using the 1 curve template instead.

What you get in that box!
What you get in that box!

It would appear that the box gives you two Interceptors that can be used for either damage or agility style games.  You also get in the box twelve upgrade cards (Elite Talents, Titles and Modifications), two of them especially for the Tie Interceptor.  With that I would say the Imperial Aces box is well worth it, when you consider the price of a single ship, this box actually saves you a bit of cash.  Prices vary depending on location but expect to pay between 20-25 for this box set.  If you play Rebels don’t fear, the Rebel Aces box will be out in Quarter 3 this year (Next three months).

The Curse of Naxxramas

0

The Curse of Naxxramas, an update for Hearthstone, has been out for three weeks now.  At first I was going to write a review after I played it for the first time, however realising how the game works I left it for a few weeks.  Now I am ready to spread the news that is, really a curse, a curse on your time!

The separate Quarters
The separate Quarters

The addition adds a new level to the game, in more ways than one.  Firstly instead of just having the practice matches as the only option for single player, you can now access the new Adventure mode.  In adventure mode you get to fight through five quarters on a single player game.  Each quarter has three heroes, each one more difficult than the last, the third being the Quarter Boss.

Thanks to this the game forces you to play outside of your own comfort decks, building new ones.  If you beat the boss you usually unlock a pair of cards for completing the quarter and you earn the actual boss you play against.  Upon completing the Quarter, you unlock the Class Challenge for that Quarter, which is two separate challenges using decks that are pre-built.  These challenges are quite fun, and the decks can be pretty random, but if at first you can’t do it, you’ll soon get there.

Curse of Naxxramas
Solo Adventure Screen

Finally there’s the Heroic game mode, which is a single player mode again, but is a lot toughter than the normal mode.  Their health is increased to forty-five and the abilities are reduced in cost, making them a lot harder to play.

This is where I have had the most fun, building and rebuilding decks to defeat these horrendously tougher bosses.  Some may feel that its just a grind, but I have found it has allowed me to explore the deck building option a lot more than I did.  Alas currently there is no reward for defeating all the bosses in Heroic, but rumour has it that once all the Quarters are open & all bosses are defeated, you will receive a special card back.

Some card examples...
Some card examples…

There are a grand total of thirty additional cards have been included in the Curse of Naxxramas release, which allows for a lot of customisation within the decks.

You can play the original Arachind Quarter (The other Quarters are; Plague, Military, Construct & the Frostwyrm Lair) for free, it costs you nothing.  You can buy the full game for £17.49, or if you own the first wing £13.99.  You can stick with the free to play model and pay for each individual wing at 700 gold each (which you can earn in game, for free) or purchase them individually for £4.99.

Each week a new Quarter opens up, so don’t expect to purchase the entire game and be-able to play it straight away.

Offical Cost Breakdown
Offical Cost Breakdown

The game is currently on the Military Quarter (Week 3), so there is only two more weeks to go before the entirety of the Curse of Naxxramas is opened up.  This is an add-on to Hearthstone that I bought without any hesitation, it is well worth the time and effort.  If you prefer the deck building side of card games, this gives you chance to flex your decks.  If you prefer a gaming challenge, you’ll love it as well.  Its a great addition and well worth your time.

Legend of Conan may Start Filming Next Year

0
Arnold Schwarzenegger as King Conan
Arnold Schwarzenegger as King Conan

Nearly two years has past since the news that Arnold Schwarzenegger would be back as King Conan, in what would be the third instalment of the Conan franchise (if you bypass the Jason Mamoa debacle). Well, there has finally been some news, Fredrik Malmberg, a producer of The Legend of Conan told ‘TheArnoldFans‘ that the script which is being written by Andrea Berloff is close to finishing. ‘We want to polish up the script, specifically about the characters.‘ Malmberg, who was speaking in an exclusive interview with ‘TheArnoldFans’ states that they hope to have the finished script turned in around September and hopefully start production in the Spring of 2015.

As of yet no director has been confirmed, though Malmberg has said, ‘A lot of directors have come forth and expressed interest and that they like Conan and want to be involved.‘ It’ll be interesting to see when Universal actually make any official announcement about the film, as they will not wish to take focus away from the release of Terminator 5: Genisys already pencilled in for summer 2015.

603109_470090049714621_551405542_n_zpsb2840388

After not hearing any more for nearly two years, it is my opinion that it is likely to get green lighted for a 2016 release. Despite not being as big of a box office draw as he used to be, there is already a lot of buzz about Schwarzenegger reprising his role in Terminator, and what with Conan being the 67-year-olds second best franchise, it feels like there would be some interest in seeing the end of the Conan trilogy.

Though don’t ever mention age or the fact he could be too old for another Conan film to the man himself who had this to say about reaching the perfect age to play the grey bearded king: ‘Age doesn’t mean anything to me. I work out every day, I work out twice a day, as a matter of fact. At night I work out with weights, and in the morning I do cardiovascular training. So for me, to get on the set and to swing the sword around again and to ride the horses and all those things doesn’t mean anything [does not scare me], because I feel like I did thirty years ago. So as long as I stay in shape, that’s the key thing, and to keep your body young.‘

Star Wars: Armada- Epic fleet battles come to your table top!

0

I honestly think Fantasy Flight Games have my house bugged, either that or someones been practicing their Jedi mind tricks on me. “This is the game I’ve been looking for” ** nods head** I have not long since finished off a comment on our X-Wing review, moaning about how I wished they’d scale the game down and have capital ships when, WHAMMY! This bit of news hits my feed. Star-Wars-Armada-Components I would love to say I am happy about this but sadly my wallet can not take another beating like it did for X-wing and Dust Tactics. If I don’t watch it I’ll be living out of house made entirely of old X-wing boxes. Who am I kidding, I’ve been dreaming of this type of game all my life. Who needs a a house anyway, eah? As long as I have shiny pretty things, that’s all that matters right? TAKE MY MONEY!  Star Wars: Armada is due for release in early 2015 Check out more information below :

FANTASY FLIGHT

Rebel and Imperial fleets fight for the fate of the galaxy in Star Wars™: Armada, the two-player miniatures game of epic Star Wars space battles! In Star Wars: Armada, you command the unmatched power of the Imperial fleet, or gain the opportunity to prove your tactical acumen as an admiral in the Rebel Alliance. Massive Star Destroyers fly to battle against Rebel corvettes and frigates. Banks of turbolasers unleash torrential volleys of fire against squadrons of X-wings and TIEs. Assemble your fleet, survey your objectives, form your battle plan, plot your course, call your shots, and destroy the enemy. Armada balances the awesome scale of the Star Wars galaxy’s ships and space warfare with ship designs and rules that make for accessible, intuitive play experiences. It’s your job to issue the tactical commands that will decide the course of battle and, perhaps, the fate of the galaxy. The Star Wars: Armada Core Set contains everything you need to get started, including the rules, an articulated maneuver tool, a range ruler, six command dials, nine attack dice, ten unpainted squadrons, and three pre-painted ship miniatures (Victory-class Star Destroyer, Nebulon-B frigate, CR90 Corellian corvette), plusmore than 130 cards and tokens.

X-Wing Miniatures Game

2

Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game is a tactical ship-to-ship combat game in which players take control of powerful Rebel X-wings and nimble Imperial TIE fighters, facing them against each other in fast-paced, dog fight style space combat.

The first thing that you will notice when opening the core box is that there are only three miniatures, one X-Wing and two TIE Fighters. The next thing you will notice is a boat load of cardboard tokens. Included are ship and pilot cards for both factions as well as a selection of upgrade cards. There is also a quick start  game that gives you a nice overview of the very basics of the game as well as a paperback rule book, the quick rules being an excellent way of introducing yourself or someone new to the core mechanics.

X-Wing Core Set Contents

The Rules

Each round of the game is broken down in to four phases: Planning, Activation, Combat and End. In the planning phase, you use each ships manoeuvre dial to select how each of your ships will move and then place it face down so your opponent can’t see. In the activation phase, players reveal each manoeuvre in order of pilot skill (shown as an orange number on the base of the miniature and on the ship card) and you then move your ship along the corresponding cardboard template. This is also when you can activate different abilities that your ships or pilots have. The combat phase is an easy range finder and dice rolling mechanic. Finally, you remove any tokens from the board, check to see if anyone has won and if not start again. It’s a simple system that rewards forward thinking and anticipation as both players are trying to guess which way the other is going. You also have to keep tabs on the order which your ships are moving, or they could end up flying in to each other.

A full rules game out of the box will last for about an hour.

The Models

The quality of the models is very high, with good details and colouring. They are pre-painted and assembled, so you can open a packet, mount it on the base and be flying straight away which is a great thing. I have always been wary of pre-assembled models but these really are great. There is also quite an active modding community, giving hints and tips for personalising your ships should you want to run different colour squadrons from the films. The ships are also to scale, so your X-Wings and TIE fighters are to scale with each other as well as bigger ships like the Millennium Falcon and Slave I.

If you enjoy the game, the urge to expand your force past the core box will hit you quickly and the model selection is really good at the moment, as we are in to the fifth wave of releases. The biggest problem here is that you will  drop a lot of money. Each fighter costs £11 each. For one model, this feels really expensive, and it is. With each ship you will get relevant pilot cards and upgrades as well as a card detailing any special rules that the ship may have which aren’t covered in the core rulebook. Fantasy Flight have also released larger ships, and both the Rebel Transport (includes and extra X-Wing) and Tantive IV are now on sale. These are priced at £49.99 and £75.99 respectively. The larger ships are not to scale with the fighters, but they use a ‘feels to scale’ size. These larger ships come with new rules that make them feel huge in comparison with slower movement and larger weapons ranges. They are also entirely optional and not something you need to have to play against your friends.

If dropping £11 on a model you aren’t sure you will even use feels too much, there are some unofficial online squadron builders you can use that gives you ship and pilot breakdowns as well as points values so you can make sure that you will be sticking to your games point limit.

Verdict

X-Wing is tactical, fast and a lot of fun. High quality models paired with a first class system and a ton of customisation makes it one of the best miniatures games you can buy.  It’s also very expensive, although not to the extent of other miniatures games and the cost may be enough to put some people off. If that isn’t an issue, this game is worth your time and money.
