Bone China to be released in early 2015!

0

Improper Books are delighted to announce PORCELAIN: BONE CHINA by Benjamin Read & Chris Wildgoose. The second volume of their creator-owned Porcelain: A Gothic Fairy Tale trilogy, Bone China is set for release in Spring 2015.

A free, full colour preview of the first 12 pages of Bone China will be available at THOUGHT BUBBLE in Leeds, on the 15th and 16th November. Those not attending Thought Bubble can also pick up a free copy thanks to supporting shops, such as Gosh! (London), Orbital Comics (London), Page 45 (Nottingham), Travelling Man (Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, York).

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Porcelain: A Gothic Fairytale comic I have only one piece of advice – find a copy and read it as soon as possible! The first part of the trilogy has been out for a while now and the authors have been working diligently since its release to complete the second part; the much anticipated Bone China. The second instalment of the story continues the tale of Child, the girl that now, as a grown woman, has taken the reigns of the porcelain empire previously ruled by the man that had changed her life for the better.

BoneChina_page05

In Bone China, more than a decade has passed since the events of Porcelain: A Gothic Fairy Tale, and Child has become Lady. Inheritor of all of Uncle’s secrets and wealth, she has continued his work, becoming equally as isolated in her quest to refine the Porcelain and put right past mistakes.

With the Porcelain more sought after than ever, Lady comes to the attention of a ruthlessly ambitious General who desires inhuman soldiers for the war effort and won’t take no for an answer. Other, more human, problems rear their head when a handsome young Captain discovers a secret part of Lady’s life.

Faced with impossible choices, Lady must forge her own path through the complexities of love and war.

BoneChina_page01

The tale is written by Benjamin Read, illustrated by Chris Wildgoose, with lettering done by Jim Campbell and colouring by Andre May. Being familiar with their previous work, both on the Porcelain trilogy and other comics, I can say I’m definitely excited by the prospect of seeing more of their work. It’s still a bit of a wait until it’s proper release, but we all know time flies and anticipation only makes the heart grow fonder, right? Not to mention there might be a bit of a surprise for those visiting Thought Bubble in Leeds on the 15th and the 16th of November.

Toy Story 4 Announced

0

It’s been awhile since we’ve heard anything about the Toy Story film series. Well, wait no more, as Disney have announced the return of these beloved characters to the big screen in Toy Story 4.

ToyStory

Set to be released in 2017, Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang are set to have another John Lasseter adventure, who directed the original Toy Story. The new film will be written by Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter, and Lee Unkrich, the talented minds behind all three Toy Story films.

“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us,” said Lasseter. “We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee, and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.”

toystory1

They have done Toy Story shorts recently, like Toy Story of Terror and the soon to be released Toy Story That Time Forgot, but this will be the first full length feature film since 2010.

Toy Story 4 is set to be released June 16th, 2017.

How Naruto Could’ve (Maybe) Saved Everyone From The Ten Tails

It’s a little known fact that I actually do enjoy Anime sometimes. The problems I have mostly are the fans who treat anime like 12 year old girls treat boy bands (see MCM for more details) . I even Podcasted about it . Out of the “Big Three” (Bleach, OnePeice, Naruto) The only one I can stomach is Naruto (even though it’s statistically 38% Filler), and with this series coming to an end this week, I thought it was about time that we sat down and had a bit of a chat about a theory I came up with, and that if I’m right the possibility of Naruto being a massive bellend who let his friends die.

A few things before we start: if you haven’t watched/read Naruto, I’m going to be using a lot of show specific jargon, so don’t get confused. Also, It should be obvious to you now, but if you haven’t got up to episode 370 in the anime, STOP READING UNLESS YOU LIKE SPOILERS.

It's always tentacles with you isn't it. Sigh.
It’s always tentacles with you isn’t it. Sigh.

Now what we know about the Ten Tails is that it uses Chakra that is born from Nature Energy. This energy is immense, as it is the energy given off by everything living and otherwise (such as the earth and mountains, etc ). This allows the Ten Tails (henceforth referred to as Juubi) to pull off immense feats of power, the likes of which had only been seen hundreds of years before with the legendary First Hokage Hashirama. Juubi is the combined Chakra of the other 9 Tailed Beasts, which he split into by the Sage of The Six Paths. Anywho , know who else uses Nature Energy?

Sage Mode

One of the many abilities that one can acquire as a shinobi is that of Sage Mode. Sage Mode allows for increased strength, health regeneration, and immense Chakra to complete complex Jutsu of incredible power. There are various sages, normally attributed to animals. Off the top of my head there are snake, dragon, toad, and slug sages in the universe. Of course our lovable protagonist acquires Sage Mode later on, this being Toad Sage powers that he learned from Jaraiya (I’m not crying) and The elder Toads.

Anime is bullshit.
Anime is bullshit.

As we learned via the training of Naruto, Sage Mode requires absolute stillness, in order for Nature Energy to fuse with one’s Chakra and thus improve and increase it. This is why Jaraiya (I’M NOT CRYING) had the Toad Sages sit on his shoulders, so that they could remain still and amass Nature Energy on his behalf, even why he moved. This Nature Energy defies Charkra Natures (earth, fire, water, lightning and wind) but behaves in very much the same way as Chakra. This is a very important fact for later on, write it down in your copy books.

Kurama

Kurama is the name of the Nine Tailed beast (henceforth referred to as Kyuubi) . He is the strongest of the Tailed Beasts bar Juubi and has a plethora of mad strong powers, yo. Kyuubi had been against naruto for many years, but they eventually reconciled, joining forces to kick the hell out of Obito Uchiha.

One of the many things Naruto can do as a Jinchuriki ( Tailed Beast host) is discuss things with Kurama in what I’m going to refer to as a Mind Temple. Inside the Mind Temple time moves differently, and conversations can happen at the speed of a thought. This was shown when Naruto attempted to rescue the other Tailed Beasts from Obito and the Gedo Statue; He has almost 20 minutes of conversation with all of them within the space of a jump (to pull rods of control from their bodies). During this Mind Temple exchange Naruto learned all of their names and was given some of their Chakra. This means that Kurama is able to transfer information to Naruto at speeds that defy time.

The fact that this information transfer can happen so quickly is a centric point of the forthcoming argument. Just before Naruto went to fight the Juubi, he remarked to Kurama (in his Mind Temple) how quickly he had infused his Chakra after a lengthy and taxing use not minutes before. Naruto asked him how, and Kurama replied that he could GIVE and TAKE Chakra AT WILL.

The Combo?

Now, as mentioned before, Chakra has natures, and just like Pokemon certain natures are super effective to other natures. This was seen when the Lightning Style triumphed over an Edo Tensei’d Deidara. Deidara however mentioned that Chakra could be “earthed” if he could’ve touched the ground while being suspended on the inside of a puppet body  He later proved this, using a sword to earth the Lightning Style.

This is where it all comes together; Juubi is Nature Energy, Kurama can give and take Chakra at will, Sage Mode uses Nature Energy, Chakra can be earthed.

When the Juubi transformed It began firing Tailed Beast Bombs of pure Nature Energy at various settlements miles away, much to everyone’s astonishment. Juubi finnaly found the target it was looking for: The Allied Shinobi HQ.It fired, killing Shikaku, Inoichi and the sensory team of Shinobi present at the time( including the Mizukage’s right hand man). An earlier attack has also killed Neji at this point, moments after Naruto (echoing Kakashi’s words to Obito) exclaimed the he would “never let my comrades die!!”

LIAR
LIAR.

While the beast bombs exploded, everyone stood in shock. I propose that Naruto, in this moment, may have made the biggest mistake of his Shinobi life. Theoretically speaking, surely  Kurama could’ve taught him how to transfer Chakra in a matter of seconds via the Mind Temple, after which Naruto could have initiated Sage Mode, jumped in front of the bombs and absorbed or earthed the Nature Energy? In fact, he could’ve taken in the Nature Energy and expelled it through Shadow Clones or Rasenshurikens aimed directly into the eye of Juubi or the then-controllers Madara and Obito. Ninja Art: Nature Style: Endless Rasenshuriken Clone Bomb!

Or something. What I’m saying Naruto could’ve prevented the deaths of a lot of people if he had not just stood there, mouth agape, like an idiot. Baka Yaro.

In fairness, this is as much Kurama’s fault as it was Naruto’s But it just feels wrong to have a protagonist with powers up the wazoo to not have done ANYTHING. Sure, the subsequent “make everyone a Kyuubi cloak” plan was good, but it wasn’t even Naruto’s plan. It was Shikamaru’s. A plan, I might add, he came up with, seconds after the death of his own father.

Shikamaru for Hokage. Just sayin’

BAMF
BAMF

UPDATE: I was reminded by a fan that Sage Jutsu worked on the Juubi Jinchuriki, thus further confirming this theory!

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

I’ve been playing the Call of Duty games a long time. Over the years they’ve had me on the edge of my seat, made me laugh, made me smile… but more recently I’ve been frustrated and often angry when playing them. Particularly with Infinity Ward‘s offering in Call of Duty: Ghosts. I didn’t hold up much hope for Advanced Warfare, but I needn’t have been sceptical.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Header

“People don’t want freedom. They want boundaries, rules. Protection. From invaders and from themselves. People need a leader who can give them both the support and the constraints to keep chaos at bay. You give them that, and they’ll follow… And that’s where I come in.”
Jonathan Irons

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare heralds Sledgehammer Games‘ return to the franchise, following their slightly underwhelming offering of Modern Warfare 3, and I’m absolutely loving it. I played on the multiplayer at EGX this year, and during a round of Uplink I got so involved I literally fell off my chair. I attended the midnight opening to get my hands on the game for Day Zero, and the store was running the game on free-for-all… so of course we played winner stays on, and I kicked a little bit of arse with a big grin on my face.

This is the first time I’ve actually had fun while playing Call of Duty since Modern Warfare 2 came out… but Sledgehammer have taken inspiration from it’s rivals Titanfall and Destiny, and have injected some much-needed fun and craziness to create a truly adrenaline-fueled experience. Include one of my favourite actors in the form of Kevin Spacey, and you have a really cinematic experience on your hands.

Kevin Spacey always has a commanding presence on screen, and here is no different.
Kevin Spacey always has a commanding presence on screen, and here is no different.

Storyline

Advanced Warfare follows the story of Jack Mitchell (voiced by Troy Baker) in 2054, who enlists in the Marine Corps with his friend Will Irons. During the course of a mission in Seoul, Will is killed and Mitchell loses an arm and as a result he’s discharged from the Corps. When Mitchell attends Will’s funeral, he’s approached by his father Jonathan Irons (Kevin Spacey), and is offered a job with the Atlas Corporation – the world’s largest private military contractor (plus he’s given a shiny new arm).

I won’t spoil any plot points for you, but expect mystery, intrigue, and a few twists and turns before the movie game enters it’s final act through to it’s conclusion. Although a little formulaic, the game has a solid storyline, and characters you’ll get involved with and attached to. With a campaign running for a decent 5.5 hours (if you speed through it), you’ll get a good playthrough with this.

What I love about this game is that the lines between video game and movie are really blurred, and with Spacey’s brilliant performance this is only helps to bolster this feeling. The voice acting is well done, and the cinematics of the game are absolutely jaw-dropping in terms of graphical quality. Spacey prettymuch reprises his Frank Underwood role from House of Cards, and he does it so well… even digitally.

The level of graphical detail is immense
The level of graphical detail is immense

Visuals

Like I’ve said, the graphics quality in the cinematic sequences of the game are amazing. It’s the small details like individual hairs and skin pores that really sell it, and the level of detail is insane. When you see someone as recognisable as Kevin Spacey faithfully recreated in immense detail, it really is a testament to how far technology has progressed.

Now I was playing on the PS3 version, which isn’t natively coded by Sledgehammer themselves – it’s a port (albeit a very good one) of it’s next-gen brethren done by High Moon (the studio behind the excellent, yet batshit insane Deadpool game). Unfortunately it does show on the PS3, as when the game transfers to using the in-game graphics engine, we lose the small details. The animation is smooth, but when you look at a characters eyes there’s a very noticeable drop in quality. The good thing though, is that the pace of the game is so fast you tend not to notice that dip (unless you’re going through a slow tutorial-esque walk sequence or something).

However what I did notice on the PS3 version is that I sometimes hit a loading screen mid-way through a level (which I’m assuming isn’t present/necessary on the PS4 and Xbox One versions). This didn’t come at an inconvenient time or anything, so there’s no problem in that respect, but it’s the first mid-level loading screen I’ve seen in the CoD franchise that I can remember.

This does drop my rating somewhat, as I’d expect Sledgehammer to natively code the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions to try to maintain the quality of the title. That being said, High Moon have done a great job in their port to get so much into the game.

Bouncy, bouncy!
Bouncy, bouncy!

Controls

If you’ve played any of the Call of Duty games in the past few years, CoD:AW will come as second nature to you. However there are a few adjustments taken into account to facilitate the Exo suit’s mechanics and abilities;

When you jump, you can now double-jump to use the Exo boost feature. This allows players to bounce around like Tigger with an Uzi on crack, spitting out death and destruction in their wake. Clicking the left stick down allows you to boost in whichever direction you’re pointing the left stick, so you can skip to the side or back and forward to avoid gunfire etc.

When you’re on the ground you can’t boost unless you jump, so you have to do a little hop and then boost in your chosen direction. If you press the crouch/prone button while in the air you’ll do a ground smash-type maneuver.

The Exo suit allows for some other interesting options, taking the place of tactical grenades on the left trigger. You can use a Predator-style cloak, pull out a personal (temporary) riot shield, gain a health or speed boost and more.

The supply drops can give you some interesting items

Multiplayer

The online multiplayer for the Call of Duty franchise has always been a big draw (sometimes players only play the multiplayer and not the campaign for some reason), and oddly enough there’s a third studio used for this aspect of the game – Raven Software. This side of the title is well polished, and the Pick 10 system has now become the Pick 13 system, and makes for some really balanced builds available.

Because of the map sizes and the more vertical aspects of the gameplay, assault rifles seem to be the dominant weapon type that people are going for. I’m favouring the AK-12 at the moment, which is available from the start. As you play and gain levels you can get supply drops, which will contain anything from new customisation options like helmets, Exo suits, boots etc… to new variant weapons. The variants will have slightly adjusted statistics (usually only by a point or two) which can help or hinder based on your playstyle.

One of the disappointing things I noticed about the multiplayer is again a drastic drop in graphical quality, but this is only noticeable in the game lobbies where you can look at other players’ loadouts etc. This is a great feature though, as you can check with guns and equipment other players use to give yourself a little inspiration. You can also duck into the firing range in the intermission to test out new guns you’ve unlocked or acquired.

The Goliath scorestreak is a bit like the Juggernaut from Ghosts, but beefier and better.
The Goliath scorestreak is a bit like the Juggernaut from Ghosts, but beefier and better.

There are some great additions in the multiplayer maps too, from a controllable sun laser that teams will fight for possession of, to a tidal wave that comes in an soaks the lower points of a map. There’s a great map where there’s an active volcano that starts erupting, so you have to evacuate one side of the map (which is quite close-combat orientated) and go to another wider side which changes to a more long-range game.

There are very few maps I dislike in Advanced Warfare (save for the really campy Bio-Lab level), and all-in-all I’m enjoying it even though I’ve mostly stuck to Team Deathmatch and Uplink so far.

Overall

All things considered, I really like Advanced Warfare. Despite the shortcomings of the last-gen versions of the game (which are purely inconsequential cosmetic issues), it’s a robust game with a decent lifespan for the campaign, and the supply drop and customisation options will keep players going on even long after max prestige.

It’s infinitely better than the debacle that was CoD: Ghosts, not that that’s hard to do. The best way I can describe the game is like a mix of Unreal Tournament, Titanfall and Black Ops 2. It’s fun, it’s fast and it’s probably going to take up a lot of my time.

The Sound Of Space: NASA Records Space Noise

0

Apparently Ridley Scott has been bullshitting us all this time : In space, you can be heard. This video surfaced in October of NASA recordings of planets and our solar system. They used the space probes INJUN1, ISEE1,  and HAWKEYE (nerds)  to pick up electromagnetic vibrations via plasma wave antennae. They set about to then translating them into the 20-20,000hrz frequency that human ears can detect , the final output resulting in sounds that are equally beautiful and chilling.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Official Main Trailer Release

0

If I’m a little honest here, the Hobbit movies are something of a mixed bag. The original Lord of the Rings trilogy was something of a masterpiece, with large parts of the story sacrificed to make a smoother film-going experience. But the Hobbit is one story stretched out to three films, in an egregious example of Hollywood greed.

Still, the Hobbit movies so far have been somewhat enjoyable, with Desolation of Smaug much more enjoyable than the first, so hopefully The Battle of the Five Armies will be much better. It certainly looks that way from this epic trailer.

I don’t know about you, but I’m expecting a five film Silmarillion depiction when this is done…

News From a Galaxy Far Far Away

Star Wars fans rejoice. We now have confirmation and the title of Episode VII.

StarwarsVII

The Morning of November 6th, 2014, I Woke up to my Star Wars notifications going off on my phone. I figured they were late to the party on telling me that they had wrapped up filming for Episode VII. In reality Lucas Films had released the full title and logo of the upcoming film Star Wars: The Force Awakens a few hours earlier.

Nothing more was provided leaving fans to speculate about the plot. What we do know is that it will take place about 30 years after Return of the Jedi, and we will see the return of many of our favourite cast members.

Returning for another adventure in space, we have Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker and Warwick Davis. Joining them on the big screen for their Star Wars debut will be John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o and Gwendoline Christie.

Star Wars:The Force Awakens hits theaters December 18th 2015. I don’t know about you but this Wookiee will be in possession of tickets as soon as they go on sale.

May The Force Be With You

PS. A while back Geek Pride were privy to some plot information from a reliable source, now whilst we appreciate it may all be complete bullshit, it is definitely plausible. POSSIBLE MASSIVE SPOILERS If you would like to know what we know click HERE.

A Series of Unfortunate Episodes

0

“I can’t believe it,” Snicket is reported to have said from an undisclosed location. “After years of providing top-quality entertainment on demand, Netflix is risking its reputation and its success by associating itself with my dismaying and upsetting books.” Netflix went on to say, “Mr. Snicket’s participation will be limited, given his emotional distress, but the project has the full involvement of his legal, literary and social representative Daniel Handler, who is often mistaken for him.”

Whereas the 2004 film combined the first three books into a single adventure, the tv series looks set to tackle all 13.

Yes, that is right – Netflix is adapting the franchise into an original series. Additionally, Paramount Television — the TV extension of the studio behind the 2004 feature that starred Jim Carrey, Meryl Streep and Jude Law — will produce the series in association with Netflix.

A Series of Unfortunate Events is a series which follows the adventures of orphaned children Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire at the hands of the villainous Count Olaf – although, given the circumstances, you would more accurately call them misadventures, as they face a multitude of trials, tribulations and misfortunes, all in their quest to uncover the secret of their parents’ death.

As a kid, I loved the film. However, despite the fact that there was interesting in making the rest of the franchise, I found that the film had answered questions too early on. It left no other real questions, other than when the nefarious Count Olaf would strike next. Additionally, it set a standard for squeezing multiple books into a single feature presentation – a prime example would be the 2008 adaptation of The Spiderwick Chronicles, another of movies by Nickelodeon.

Now, with an entire series, they have the potential to expand beyond the first three books and into previously unexplored territory, such as the other villains and the Quagmire triplets (another group of siblings who lost their parents to similar circumstances).
