Finally, The Spawn Film We’ve Been Waiting For

0

“Ye who enter, abandon all hope”

Yesterday at around 6pm I got a rather exited email from long time bestie and new podcaster Liam Martin with simply the words “WHY DOES NO ONE MAKE A FILM LIKE THIS” and a YouTube link. Now what you probably don’t know about Liam is that he’s quite the reserved gent, bar Assassin’s Creed (which he has as a tattoo), so for me to recieve and email in ALL THE CAPS I was instanty intrigued as to what it was that got him all flustered like.

And he was pretty fuckin’ right to be, hoo boy.

Director Michael Paris released what is , quite simply, the greatest Spawn film (fan made or otherwise) ever created. It has exactly the right amount of tension, fear and badassery that you could expect from Todd MacFarlane’s Hellspawn Warrior. In this short Fan-film you are left hungry for a feature length- With incredible CG and a perfect soundtrack.

Previous iterations are utterly left in the dust compared to this film that was clearly made with the character in their hearts and minds. We can only hope that someone who can make these sorts of decisions manages to see this masterpiece and throw a few mil at Mr Paris. I’m off to bury my head into some early Spawn issues- In the mean time, check it out below.

Square-Enix Debut English Voice Actors for Final Fantasy XV

0

Voice acting can often make or break a game and this is especially true for RPG’s. This genre, arguably more than any other, has to be able to tell a compelling story about intriguing, multi-dimensional characters and only a superb voice actor such as Nolan North, Troy Baker and Liam O’Brien to name a few, can pull that off. Get a bad one, however, and all hope is lost. It takes you out of the game, never letting you be truly immersed in the beautiful world that had been laid out in front of you.

On that note, Square-Enix have just re-released the Final Fantasy XV trailer that was shown off a while back, this time debuting the English voice actors. With Final Fantasy being on the decline in many people’s eyes, this initially worried me but, after having listened to the trailer, I was put at ease. The voices perfectly match the brief glimpses of personality and character the group shows and just having that beautiful, grand orchestral marvel accompanying it gets me far too excited. I just hope it’s a critical hit with the rest of the fan base.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

0

Dragon Age: Inquisition is easily one of the most anticipated games of this year.  Having Bioware’s favoured fantasy RPG being previously setback an entire year (and then once again for another month, as announced in September), die-hard fans have been waiting eagerly for Inquisition’s release. The game has had a lot to live up to, especially after the so-called universal let down of its predecessor, Dragon Age 2. However, in the franchises’ latest instalment, you are not just a mere mortal (if you wish) with a band of merry companions to manage. No, you play instead as the Inquisitor, a focal point to a much larger matter of reforming the world of Thedas that has been torn asunder by politics and civil war. If that wasn’t enough to keep you busy, demons spew from rifts due to a tear in the veil known as The Breach, causing those beings who were locked in the dreamlike Fade to wreak a nightmarish havoc among the world. Even before the games release under a month ago, Dragon Age: Inquisition was met with more than a promising reception at conferences such as E3 and Eurogamer back in the summer. However, now that the game is finally here, does this latest chapter in the Dragon Age saga warrant the hype that has circled around it for so long?

If one thing is for certain, it is that Bioware have been long looking for a Dragon Age instalment that is of the same spectacle as Mass Effect 2. Origins, while introducing us to this compelling fantasy world, always seemed to fall somewhat short due to the graphical and gameplay restrictions that are near unavoidable in a game made 5 years ago. This unfortunately meant that we never saw exactly what Dragon Age was really capable of, until now of course. Inquisition most certainly does not have the restrictions from previous instalments and it makes this perfectly clear in typical Bioware fashion, opening up with a more than memorable prologue.

However, like with every fantasy RPG epic, one must first create a hero for its narrative to revolve around and Inquisition’s character creator tool is definitely something to marvel at in terms of detail. Choosing between Human, Elf, Dwarf and the now fan-favourite Qunari, players can customise intricate elements to their Inquisitor’s facial structure through a series of sliders and wheels, similar to The Sims 4. As seen in similar instalments, the creator tool even gives you the choice to pick which voice you wish your Inquisitor to have throughout your playthrough. There is a choice of either British or American accents, courtesy of Bioware voice actors such as Mass Effect 3’s Special Comms Samantha Traynor and Turian Nyreen Kandros (Alix Wilton Regan and Sumalee Montano) for your female Inquisitor and even Dragon Age: Origin’s  Zevran Arainai (Jon Curry) if yours is to be a male Inquisitor. It’s a nice touch on Bioware’s part to add a range of voices to choose from, particularly in terms of the Dragon Age lore, as the Dwarf and Qunari races, for example, are often depicted with having American accents as opposed to British. With this much customisation one cannot help but feel a little intimidated, but it is advisable to take time to create whichever character you may wish to choose; and with a creator tool that is as robust as Inquisition’s, there really is no excuse not to.

Once Inquisitors are made as attractive (or unattractive) as one may want, it is time to truly delve deep in to what Dragon Age Inquisition has to be offer.  Depending on the world-state players may have chosen through The Dragon Age Keep, choices that were made in previous instalments are definitely present in Inquisition, something which can be brought to light when speaking to certain companions. It is advisable that one knows as much about the lore of Dragon Age as possible before playing Inquisition, not only in order to avoid any plot confusion, but especially as there are a fair few characters from novels such as The Masked Empire and Asunder (namely companions such as Cole and Vivienne, as well as Empress Celene) that have a presence in Inquisition’s narrative. It goes without saying that the Dragon Age franchise is one which does not lack for story; what is more pleasing is that references to the previous games, comics and novels gives an overall feeling of unity amongst every writer that has contributed.

However, what is clearer here is that every entry in to this saga has been leading up towards Inquisition; this is particularly evident when looking at the long list of those who wish to see the Inquisition succeed. Characters such as Seeker Cassandra, the Champion of Kirkwall Hawke, everyone’s favoured storyteller Varric Tethras, as well as the return of Origin’s companions Leliana and Morrigan, all aiding towards the Inquisition’s defence against the mysterious Elder One and The Breach itself. These are characters that have played pivotal parts in Dragon Age thus far and are now assisted by a string of memorable characters that are superbly voiced and likable in their own way. The assembly of such a formidable group serves well to give the sense that whatever fate lies ahead will no doubt shake the entire world of Thedas. The fact that it is the player’s job as the Inquisitor to lead them there is another thing almost entirely. In the first two instalments of Dragon Age we have been a leader of a small band of individuals which have only towards the end made their mark. What is interesting here is that the role of the Inquisitor is sold to us as the first that holds any actual power. For the majority of the time this holds up within the narrative, particularly as the position calls upon the player to bring forth a conclusion towards the mage/templar war by choosing who will assist you against the final battle. This is further implicated when setting tasks for your advisors on the War Table, which is a more sophisticated version of the Galaxy Map of Mass Effect. It is also here that the Inquisition itself unlocks new maps to explore, gathers coin and influence based on the strengths of your advisors who vary from the armed forces of Commander Cullen, the spy-ring of Leliana and the political connections of Josephine.

Despite this all being what reinforces Inquisition‘s impression that you are a part of something much bigger than Origins and Dragon Age 2 combined, one cannot help but feel extremely overwhelmed with a world that has now become so free-roaming. A prime example of this is in the early hours of the game where the first unlockable map is The Hinterlands, a map which has been teased by the developers as bigger than the entire map of Dragon Age: Origins altogether and containing an unbearable amount of side-missions. This stays true to Bioware’s idea of a modern RPG where in which the player has entirely full reign and for the most part the smaller quests are, in fact, beneficial.  On the other hand, there are definitely times in Inquisition where one may wonder whether or not taking down a group of bandits or finding food for refugees will actually give the player anything in the long run other than, maybe, the false sensation that there’s their ‘good deed’ of the day, a facet of the game which felt more like an MMO in parts. After a while, and once you get a hang of the game, however, you’ll no doubt be able to decide what quests exactly count towards the success of the Inquisition, leading to eventual unlocks of the other regions of Thedas. Problems aside, I must say this is a definite must as each map is intricate and gorgeously individual, giving a true impression of Thedas that we have not seen in Dragon Age up until now.

In spite of this, it is unavoidable that a game with the spectacle that Dragon Age carries would encounter a string of bugs that became quite an annoyance, the prime example of this being dialogue and interface elements that would suddenly stop during combat. Nonetheless, possibly the most humorous of these glitches was my own Inquisitor’s voice suddenly changed from being British to American in the space of a cut-scene. Although this was amusing, it personified just exactly how much technicalities such as this can take the player right out of what, in theory, is a truly atmospheric RPG. A patch has since been released that is said to have dealt with these issues, but only time will tell if this fixes issues players have noticed.

Ultimately, it is no primitive idea at all that Bioware has concocted with their latest chapter to Dragon Age.  Most of the time, Inquisition succeeds in its attempt to perfect the modern RPG with its attention to detail in the overall style and feel of the game, something which feels truly epic. This is definitely something in which fans can agree that they are receiving their money’s worth but may be more for a die-hard fan than someone who is looking for something a little more casual due to its seemingly endless amount of content. The combat is a massive improvement, feeling far more controlled in a hugely uncompressed world, which, even well past the 50th hour, can leave a player feeling as though they are only touching the surface of what’s available. It might be perceived that Dragon Age: Inquisition could have gone to the next level if only it had a more thoughtful plot, but the game is still a thoroughly enjoyable one that will no doubt bring fans back to it even after their first playthrough.

The Office – Hobbit style!

Or is it the other way around? Saturday Night Live, who rarely disappoints brought us this lovely gem, featuring Martin Freeman’s Bilbo Baggins in a…surprising setting. What would Bilbo be doing once his adventure is over? Retreat to his little hobbit hole, smoke and relax, of course. But what if he chose a different path? In this 5 minute sketch we get to see what would happen if he would work in an office, surrounded by co-workers such as Gollum, Gandalf, Legolas, Tauriel and even the random orc.

It’s all very civilized, I promise. All murderous intents were left behind in Middle Earth and well, as “Bilbo” put it, “well, you don’t choose the people you work with”. I can relate, I can relate.

Take a look, enjoy and let imagine: if only most offices were as fun…

New Trailer for Doctor Who Christmas Special

0

The new trailer for the Doctor Who Christmas special conveys a much less cheery outlook then the previous ones. This 35 second trailer for ‘Last Christmas’ sees the Doctor returning to Clara and whisking her away to the North Pole where they are joined by good ol’ Saint Nick played by Nick Frost. The synopsis for the episode:

Four crew members of an Ice Cap Polar Base – Ashley Carter, Bellows, Professor Albert and Shona – are under attack from the alien Kantrofarri. Fortunately for them, help is on the way. But desperate though their situation is, how willing will they be to accept one rescuer who arrives in a police box, and another who turns up on a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer?

Will this be Clara’s last outing with the Doctor? I certainly hope so.

Insurgent’s Trailer is Finally Here!

After a small teaser released a month ago, Insurgent, the second instalment of the Divergent trilogy, based on Veronica Roth’s bestselling books, finally came out with a proper trailer.

With the first movie receiving mixed reviews and a mostly lukewarm reception from fans, Insurgent has quite a lot to overcome. Theo James and Shailene Woodley reprise their roles as Four/Tobias and Tris Prior, our heroes that must face the villainous Janine portrayed by Kate Winslet. Jai Courtney, Miles Teller and Ansel Elgort are also part of the cast, playing the less than noble Erik, Peter and Caleb Prior, respectively. Directed by Robert Schwentke the movie is due to be released in March, 2015.

Hopefully it will be as action packed as advertised and won’t suffer from the same problems the first movie had when it came to its pacing.

Full length trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road is here and it’s insane!

0

The first full trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road, the long awaited fourth film in the Mad Max series, just appeared and it’s the best trailer for an action oriented film in years.

The world of returning director and co-writer George Miller’s famous creation looks stunning with sun baked sand dunes, choking sand storms and vehicular carnage of a kind long since lacking on the big screen. Amidst this sand choked carnage is Tom Hardy as Max, Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa and Nicholas Hoult as Nux.

Eat that Michael Bay!

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Delayed

0

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has now experienced a second delay, with its release date being pushed back to May 19, 2015. Developer CD Projekt Red has announced in an open letter that due to the ambition of the game build, there are still bugs to fix and features that are not yet working correctly that require maintenance.

Given that the game is set to have over 100 hours of content along with an all-star cast containing the likes of Game of Thrones’ Charles Dance, it’s perhaps no surprise that the game is requiring a lot of work and it’s nice that the developers want to ensure a quality product rather than simply running out a rush job requiring a year of patching before it’s actually complete. It’s still a shame to see what looks to be a great game delayed though and we can only hope it’s worth the wait.

For more information, the full open letter is below.

“Dear Gamers,

Ever since we started working on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, we knew it would be an ambitious game. We wanted, and still aim, to give you an incredible experience, an epic adventure in a vast, completely open fantasy universe.

The sheer size and complexity of The Witcher, key features of the title, have had a decisive impact on production. Now, nearing the end of our work, we see many details that need to be corrected. When we release the most important game in our studio’s history, we must be absolutely sure that we did everything we could to limit any bugs to a level that will allow you to enjoy the game thoroughly.

With this in mind, we took another look at current workloads and what they mean for the team. Even though everyone is working at full speed, we concluded that we need another 12 weeks, so we are shifting the release date of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to May 19th, 2015.

We owe you an apology. We set the release date too hastily. It’s a hard lesson, one to take to heart for the future. We know what we want to do to make Wild Hunt one of the best RPGs you will ever play. And we continue to work hard to achieve just that. So, we apologize and ask for your trust.

Thank you for the all support you show us on a daily basis. We truly do appreciate it. It has fueled us in our passion since the start and will continue to do so.

Mark Hamill to reprise Trickster role in The Flash

0

Continuing its so far excellent run, no pun intended, in fine form, it has now emerged that the team behind the CW’s The Flash are now bringing back another classic character. No less than Mark Hamill is going to be reprising his role as James Jesse, aka The Trickster in an upcoming episode of the series.

According to an official synopsis, Hamill’s Trickster is “an anarchist terrorist con man serving a life sentence in Iron Heights who helps Barry and Detective West to foil the city-wide attacks of a wannabe Trickster eagerly following in the original’s deadly footsteps.”

Hamill has reprised the role once before, for the Justice League Unlimited animated series, but this is the first time since the ’90s Flash series that he’ll have been in the Trickster’s shoes live on screen. It’s a big win for The Flash team to get him on board (“Having Mark reprise his role as The Trickster was on our original wish list when we were planning our version of The Flash” – executive producer Andrew Kreisberg) and I for one can’t wait to see what the living legend that is Hamill will bring to an already amazing series.
