Cinematic trailer for Total War Warhammer is just as good as you hoped

British developer The Creative Assembly’s Total War has 9 games and several spin offs to its name the combination of turn based strategy, resource management and real time battles being a hit with gamers. Total War has so far generally been based in various eras of world history with the first game released in 2000 being set in feudal Japan, now though The Creative Assembly have their sights on something a little different the fertile fantasy world of Warhammer.

Games Workshop’s Warhammer is ideal for The Creative Assembly’s Total War, it has numerous different troop types belonging to a host of different armies, but given how notoriously protective Games Workshop is of its property the idea that Total War Warhammer would ever actually be a thing seemed unlikely at best and then this cinematic trailer appeared.

The trailer quickly introduces several different armies in impressive fashion as a priest of Sigmar sequestered in his library narrates the state of the world whilst a griffon rider ( possibly Emperor Karl Franz) and a wizard fight the horde of boar riding Orcs laying siege to the city. There’s more though as the priest introduces each race with a zombie dragon riding vampire count representing the Undead and dwarves fighting off giant spiders featuring before the ruinous powers of Chaos corrupt the priest with the trailer ending with the ominous appearance of a Lord Of Change, the towering greater demon of Tzeentch.

Jurassic World’s 2nd trailer is out!

And you know what? I actually like it better than the first. While I am not sure that we really needed a Jurassic World movie, I doubt I could be bored during this film if I tried. And you can never have to many dinosaurs, right?

Perhaps I’m reading too much into the trailer of a movie that features dinosaurs in heavy numbers, but I couldn’t help but react to the “it’s hunting for sport'” bit. I guess it’s hard not to see the parallels to the very human activity of hunting for sport. Then again, it is a genetically engineered killing machine, designed by humans who (as per usual) lose track of their creation. And fail to learn from past mistakes, given that playing with dinosaurs didn’t turn out to be such a bright idea the first time around.

We get glimpses of the action that awaits for us in two months time and enough information to keep us interested, but not enough to guess the ending. Unless they go the classic route and the dashing hero gets the damsel in distress safe and sound, away from the big bad dinosaur. I don’t know about you, but I’m rooting for the dinosaur in this one. One way or another, it’s bound to be good and fun. I was told it also looked scary, but I have yet to notice that. If you see it, get back to me and tell me what scared you.

Special warning: Watch this movie future scientists and learn why one should never mess with nature. Especially since, as Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) put it “They’re dinosaurs. Wow enough.” (This also goes for the adults that might suddenly decide that a Triceratops would make a great pet and want to raise one in the basement).

Other than Chris Pratt, Vincent D’Onofrio, Bryce Dallas Howard and Katie McGrath also complete the stellar cast. I don’t know what their chances of surviving the whole movie are, though, given that in the trailer people seem to drop like flies. I guess we’ll all see on 12 June when the movie finally hits the theatres worldwide. Will you be watching?

John Wick

John Wick serves as somewhat of a critique of action films. It is highly likely this is meaning I’m putting on the film, rather than it being intended by the writers, but there are a couple of moments in the film where the notions of civility and basic instincts are raised that, to me, seem to support the theory I shall now unfold. Wick himself consistently follows base instinct, namely revenge, while denying his enemies’ pretenses of being civilised. To look at this as a position of critique, it is arguable that the film is drawing a line between action films that go pure and simple for the action, such as John Wick, and those that make pretenses at deeper plot in some sort of aspiration towards ‘high culture’. That is not to say that action films are inherently incapable of good or complex plotting, rather it is saying that they should not necessarily try to stretch themselves to creating Machiavellian level plotting in order to be something more than they need to be. As much as people go to see romances for the big kiss scene, action films are viewed for the action. John Wick sets an example by keeping it simple. Ex hitman, dog left by dead wife, russian mobsters steal car and kill dog, unleash Keanu. Then allow directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, former stunt guys themselves who worked with Keanu on the Matrix, to play to their strengths and focus on creating raw, slick moments of incredible kinetic violence.

John_Wick_Movie

John Wick is not a “dumb” film, that’s a definition I want to make clear when I say that it’s simple. I simply mean that it is a film that knows what its audience wants and, perhaps more importantly, what it is good at. The setup as I described is all that’s really necessary. Particularly as the film is rather ingenious in letting plenty of moments of minute plot slip in that tease at a far greater universe that exists in the world of John Wick. You may not necessarily notice it amidst all the glorious Keanu action, particularly when he looks so damn good in that all black suit, but there are a lot of little details that are left, for the most part, unexplained. The world these various assassins live in, particularly as related to the seemingly exclusively hitman occupied hotel The Continental, is extensively teased but never fully realised because, ultimately, it is not necessary to the central narrative line. That doesn’t mean that it’s not fascinating however and I couldn’t help but think how well John Wick would operate as a comic book universe. Maybe, with the sequel/sequels supposedly lined up, we may get to see that dark universe more fully realised.

Regardless of franchise potential though, it’s hard not to love a film that looks this good. With Stahelski and Leitch’s prior stunt experience, aided by the fact that they’ve previously worked with Keanu, it would be hard to imagine John Wick working as anything less than a solid action outing but the pair really go all out and deliver fight scenes that are superbly choreographed with the right amount of reality and violence to really make you feel the fights, all the while not shying away from the fact that in the character of Wick, Keanu Reeves is somewhat mythic. A couple of moments in the fights really stood out for me but on very opposite ends of the spectrum. The first sees Reeves break a guy’s neck by slamming him onto a table and then chopping down so that the neck bends over the table’s edge, snapping in a seriously brutal fashion. On the lighter side of the spectrum however, there is a rather wonderful moment that sees Keanu having to reload mid one-on-one before he headshots the guy. You’ll have to see it to really appreciate the moment, but it is a wonderfully light touch of comedy to see the hitman so terrifyingly skilled that he is nicknamed the Boogeyman having to reload mid-fight with a look of mild irritation at nothing more than the inconvenience. And speaking of reloading, it is something that actually happens reasonably often, a point that may seem unimportant but is great to see. Far too many action films seem to equip their heroes with guns that just have never-ending bullets, seeing Wick burning through ammunition forces him to change up the fights and keeps you grounded in a way that stops the film ever entirely overplaying its hand on the mythic level of Wick’s skill.

200_s

Really, the only issue I can take with the film is that there are a couple of moments of cliche villainy when you’d expect the bad guy to just kill Wick but instead take the opportunity to monologue, obviously giving Wick the change to escape. And while these moments are somewhat trite, seeing as they inevitably lead into more of the great action scenes that really define this film, they’re not too hard to forgive. The potential of sequels is also something mildly concerning in that they could so easily fall into cash-in territory, particularly given the film’s nicely wrapped up ending, but, provided they stick to the tenets of the first film and don’t overplay their hand, there’s no reason that more outings into the universe of John Wick can’t be just as superbly violent and entertaining as this one.

Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice Leaked trailer – An Analysis **UPDATED**

batman-vs-superman

So once again the best laid plans of a multi-billion dollar studio attempting to maximise the hype and anticipation around the release of a movie trailer, have been ruined by nothing more than a fan-boy with a camera phone.

After Lucasfilm were forced to abandon plans to screen the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens exclusively in cinemas after a screener was leaked within hours, the same fate has now befallen Warner Brothers’ eagerly awaited Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

A complicated and confusing campaign which involved a 5-second flash-teaser being released late on Thursday night which was meant to whet appetites for a longer trailer being attached to either Marvel’s Avengers: The Age Of Ultron or Mad Max: Fury Road looks to have been scuppered early this morning when the full trailer turned up online (with added shaky hands and Spanish subtitles “FALSO DEUS!!”).

Hopefully this leak forces Warners to relent and release a full HD version ASAP, as it will allow a million DC fanboys (like myself) to analyse every frame, in the same way that the Force Awakens trailer was dissected after the Star Wars Celebration event in California yesterday. (LOOKS LIKE THEY DID!)

But from behind the blurriness of the screener, here’s what has caught my eye:

  • This movie is DARK…very, very DARK. Yes, obviously I know that with Batman involved it was always going to be dark – but this takes it to a whole other level. This movie seems to go well beyond the Gothic grandeur of the Tim Burton original and its sequel Batman Returns (hell, even they had a sense of playfulness running throughout – even though it was unsettling: Nicholson’s Joker cracking puns a-plenty while killing, Devito’s Penguin hacking the Bat-mobile, etc.).It even seems to outdo the bleakness of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, where you knew that Wayne/Batman would spend each movie being tested and suffering, but that there would always been light at the end of the tunnel (Gordon’s incredible “silent guardian” speech at the end of DK, Alfred’s Italian café scene at the end of DKR).But this…this just looks like “Sorrow v. Misery: Dawn Of Grimdark”. I really hope there is a little respite from this: perhaps we’ll have some witty banter between Bruce and Alfred (although I doubt Jeremy Irons, incredible actor as he is, will have the same warmth that Michael Caine brought to the part), or hopefully we’ll see some improvement in the Clark Kent character (less whiny emo Clark, more charming Chris Reeves-esque Clark).
  • Holy protein shakes (and/or steroids), Batman! Ben Affleck is built like a brick shithouse for this part. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that there is a decent chance that Affleck’s portrayal of Batman could be the definitive movie version so far. It’s certainly going to be the closest to the comic, as the shot of him hulking in the shadows could essentially have been lifted from the panels of seminal graphic novels The Dark Knight Returns, The Long Halloween or Hush.
  • This is less of the Keaton ‘midget yuppie hidden behind a ton of Kevlar and rubber’, and the Bale ‘sleek, spelunking ninja’, and more of the ‘mobile tank on legs’ that Frank Miller made popular in the 1980s. While I’m a little unsure of Afflecks Bat-voice, the brooding that he has brought into his acting in the last few years (since his post ‘Gigli’/Bennifer rebirth) is perfect for a menacing Batman. And the suit is fucking perfect – it looks like a cloth suit that is there to compliment the physique that Bruce Wayne has crafted through years of training and dedication – not a suit to hide his physical inadequacies.
  • As much as I did enjoy Man Of Steel, parts of it did leave me very cold. Henry Cavill was unfortunately quite bland in the main role, not helped by a script that seemed to be written more for fans of the Dark Knight trilogy rather than the actual character of Superman, the comics or the Chris Reeve movies. He was depressed, meandering and conflicted. While there was certainly nothing wrong with having a little of that in the movie (come on – he’s a guy who’s just found out that he’s essentially a god, of course he’s going to feel negatively about that). But it was almost as if that’s all there was to the character – none of the positive acceptance that although he is an outsider, he can and will make a difference to his adopted planet; none of the playful flirting between him and Lois (there was absolutely no chemistry between Cavil and Amy Adams). It was like Morrissey was in the cape, rather than the youthful Cary Grant as he is normally portrayed. From this trailer, it looks like more of the same unfortunately. Only this time, there’s the added emphasis of Supes’ god-like-status and his effect on the world.
  • Of the collage of voices that begin the trailer, the only two that I recognise are Holly Hunter (who certainly speaks about Superman in the negative, but in a dignified tone – for an actress of her standing, I could imagine her playing the president or a senator) and famous physicist and broadcaster Neil DeGrasse Tyson – who better to speak about our place in the cosmos, and how the arrival of an alien superbeing would severely alter humanity’s perception of its importance.
  • And that concept excites me greatly. How would today’s world react if this actually happened? A world currently blighted by religious extremism and violence upon those who worship supposed ‘false gods’. How would an America which faces a threat so powerful that even the ultimate deterrent of nuclear weapons wouldn’t be enough to maintain their superiority, react? It’s obvious from the trailer that this is exactly the course that the writers have taken. It would be interesting to see where Batman and Lex Luthor will fit into this? Will Batman be working as an agent of a government desperate to exert some level of control over the Man Of Steel? Or will he be an independent force attempting to prove to Supes that there are creatures on earth can cannot be pushed around, even by a ‘god’. Will Luthor be the manipulative force in the background?
  • It’s always nice to see the Bat-Plane/Bat-Wing and of course The Bat-mobile – however, am I the only one who feels like this was just a retreading of the militaristic bulk of the Tumbler and ‘Bat’ of the Dark Knight Trilogy. Obviously it makes no sense having Batman bomb around in a souped-up sports car or tiny helicopter like the 60’s series (super-villains have armies rather than henchmen!), but come-on at least try to make them original!
  • Lastly, the face-off between Supes and the armoured Batman looked incredible back when we first saw it (the Comic-Con short teaser from last year) – it’s pure Dark Knight Returns, and the white-eyed Batman/red-eyed Superman image is the perfect way to sell the whole concept of ‘Batman v. Superman’. Please don’t show me anymore! And don’t show anything more of Wonder Woman, Aquaman or Luthor…leave something to be a surprise, Warners!

All in all, it’s a solid but decidedly bleak trailer. I’m still a little on the fence about the project, but more because I think the Superman character is being left behind and not being given the chance to develop into the franchise that fans deserve – same with Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, etc.. They all should have had their own movies to introduce the characters properly and to make the concept of these individuals coming together to form the ‘Justice League’ entity more important.

Warners are way too desperate to have a Justice League cash-cow to compete with Avengers and are letting their corporate greed have a detrimental effect on these iconic characters. On the other hand, Batman will be fine – the character will always appeal to the mass market, and in Ben Affleck hey may just have the actor to bring the comics-centric version of the character that the fans have always craved.

Matthew McConaughey Reacts to the new Star Wars Trailer…

0

Yesterday the first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens dropped and the internet exploded in something I’m now calling a webgasm. Praise was high and frequent, many emotions expressed and spread like a virus through social media. When something becomes so massive instantly, it is only a matter of time before someone jumps on it and that is what YouTube user oskararnarson has done.

This is Matthew McConaughey’s reaction to the Star Wars trailer and it is perfect.
