Board games suck! And here’s why…

OK, don’t let the post title fool you; I love board games. My collection is pretty massive, ranging from 5 minute card and dice games all the way to the epic 8 hour slug-a-thons with cool miniatures and card board tokens festooned across the table. So when I scroll through my social media feeds and see this article on the Telegraph website, my hackles go up like …

In short, the ‘journalist’ who wrote this based a huge number of his summations on a survey conducted by that well-known mogul of the tabletop gaming industry, Barclaycard (seriously?!) The questions referred to whether children these days play as many board and card games as their parents. Of course, if the titles in the survey are games like Happy Families or Monopoly, what chance do these have against the likes of Candy Crush Saga and Age of War in this age of the smart phone and touch tablets? Predictable, the children in the survey played fewer games than their parents.

How can board games really compete with the smart generation?
How can board games really compete with the smart generation?

Harry ‘Wally’ Wallop then goes on to spew forth asinine comments, half-baked generalisations such as blaming the poorness of seventies television for people playing more board games as ‘time killers’, or how nearly all board games are badly designed cumbersome lumps. The final nail in Wally’s attempt to be an authority on tabletop gaming is this:

I’d prefer to kill that time doing something more educational, more interesting and more fun.

Really?! Board games aren’t educational? Interesting? FUN!?! The tabletop gaming scene is going from strength to strength every year, with dozens of games released monthly. The crowdfunding platform Kickstarter has hundreds of board games, card games, miniatures and gaming peripheral projects uploaded each year. New board gaming cafes are opening around the world all the time, including at least three more in the UK following the success of Thirsty Meeples in Oxford. Not only that, but the UK Games EXPO, Britain’s largest tabletop gaming event, has year-on-year increased it’s venue size to accommodate the steady growth of attendees.

So where is Wally coming from? No idea guys. This is a clear example of piss-poor journalism, where a scant wisp of information has been spun out with a hefty dollop of personal opinion, clickbait comments designed to incite rage and tripe. Even the most basic of Google searches would bring up boardgamegeek.com, the Dice Tower network and Wil Wheaton’s Tabletop series on Youtube. All of these show how strong the tabletop gaming community is and the growth it is experiencing.

This guy has done so much for the industry; maybe look him up Harry?
This guy has done so much for the industry; maybe look him up Harry?

So Harry and the Telegraph at large, please do your research. Articles like this just cause damage amongst the uninformed and rage amongst the fanbase. If you fancy an education, just give us a call in the comments below; I’d be more happy to show you the error of your ways with a round of Catan or Lords of Waterdeep!

So folks, what do YOU think? Board gaming is a tedious time killer or a great way to spend an evening with friends and family?

Kill your characters: Why Batman needs to die

One issue. They couldn’t let Batman be actual, for realises dead for one stinkin’ issue. And no, I’m not accepting FCBD’s offering as that was a spin off. Batman #41 came out a few days ago, showing us the first escapades of one Moustacheless Jim Gordon fighting an energy monster in a batmech. Now the issue I have isn’t with the comic- it was actually well done, and there was some clever self-referencing, especially to the gaudy advertising strategy in this month of DC releases (more on that here) . The book really captured our nascent ex-comissioner coming to grips with what it meant to be the Batman and being, quite rightly, terrified of the prospect.

Silly rabbit, Tricks are for...whoever you want them to be, sir
Silly rabbit, Tricks are for…whoever you want them to be, sir

The problem I have is that Bruce Wayne , and comic book characters in general, just won’t seem to stay dead. Max Landis has observed this way before this hairy cynic, but gorramit if I want to add fuel to the fire I will do. But seriously, you should go check out his video. Now I get that in order to keep a profit, we need to keep our big famous protagonists in the forefront of everything, but the creative industries at the moment are struggling and will continue to struggle if they don’t foster new talent and, more importantly, new ideas.

Harry Shearer of now ex-Simpsons fame once explained to Chris Hardwick in an interview that the biggest problem with new writers on the Simpsons is that they’d try to make the mainstay characters do or say something completely out of character. This would lead to tension in the studio and fan outcry/retconn if these changes got through ( Principal Tamsarian, anyone?). What I think Harry is saying here is that you need to keep characters true to their core for something to work. Yeah you can break the rules, of course you can put your characters in unfamiliar situations, but don’t change who they are. If you want to do that, Kill them. This is no more true than in the old tights n’ capes game: most supers are replaceable.

Allow me to cast your minds back to 2010, and the Batman story Batman: R.I.P. Sub-dimensional warlock Grant Morrison was at the helm of this masterpiece and had also been busy reinventing Batman into what was essentially, Batgod. He had an answer ( or a drug)  for everything, including giving Bruce Wayne a back-up personality just incase he lost his mind- the Batman of Zur-En-Arr.  I mention this because it all lead up to some fantastical story about Bruce Wayne becoming a literal Time Bomb who killed Darkseid. But the important thing here is what happened while Bruce was away. It was known as the Battle For The Cowl (which, fun fact, my ex still has my copy of). This meant everyone came out of the woodwork to try and be the next Batman. Dick Grayson (former Robin, current Nightwing, former Disco-Nightwing)  eventually took up the mantle, and went on some bizarre Batman adventures with the Robin, Damian Wayne.

Burn.
Burn.

Brucey boy comes back after a few months and decides to see how the old BatFamily is without him at the helm. As it turns out, they are doing particularly well. Bruce becomes a new character called The Insider, keeping his identity a secret. This storyline had me utterly salivating- Without the responsibility of The Batman, what would Bruce do? As it turns out, be it due to studio or fan pressure, sod all. He revealed himself, formed Batman Inc, and Dick stepped down.

The reason I’m telling you all this is that 5 years ago we saw some growth in characters. A new paradigm that was fresh and interesting was scrapped within months. And then erased form all time with The New 52 (Now being erased by Convergeance) . There was an opportunity to bring something different and it was ignored through what I can only assume is fear. Fear of investment, maybe? Who knows.Batman needed to stay dead; In this I mean Bruce’s Batman. DC had a real opportunity here with the incredible writer/artist team of Morrison and Daniel to enact an everlasting change upon the DCU. How would this more upbeat Batman play a part in the JLA? how would he deal with Gotham’s criminals? Would the mantle change him? What about the new Robin, Damian Wayne? There are so many questions that we only got a smidge of the way to answering before it was retconned. And now, less than 5 years later, Bruce is dead again. And no one gives a shit. the only reason I got the comic was because it’s probably going to be worth something one day.Comics should be a commodity second to a glorious pieces of emotionally provoking escapism.

Or, super prostitutes.
Or, super prostitutes.

The biggest problem in the entertainment industry is that both sides, the creators and the consumers, only seem to understand one aspect of the phrase at a time. The consumers are only worried about entertainment, and don’t understand how business decisions are made.  For example: The Firefly fans went and got a movie, then they all torrented it- therefore no season 2. The creators however seem to only have the industry in mind- what sells? What’s vogue? There’s no more Eastman and Laird types in the mainstream  causing trouble. The reason that die-hard comics fans like our resident curmudgeon Mr Haigh don’t buy into the old capes game is because of the lack of trust in the readership. What happened in last issue’s Batman is indicative of the issue- the only constant being the lack of change. We need characters to die. There needs to be change, or the industry will atrophy and crumble as fans grow tired of the status quo. Max Landis made an incredible video  about how death In comics doesn’t matter anymore  and he’s right. This latest example being possibly more heinous than a healing coma.

So what can you do about it? Buy interesting things, make interesting things. Remember the industry part of “entertainment industry” Vote with your wallets, it’s the only way they’ll listen. Crowdfund stuff that looks good or stuff that interests you or seems different. You are the agent of change here.

One fucking issue guys, come on.

5 Factoids about the Battle of Waterloo – 200th Anniversary

0

Well as some of you will know, i’m a bit of a History Nerd and having done a Military history degree and my dissertation on Napoleon I thought it would be rather apt, on this the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, to hit you with some factoids about the  engagement that you may, or may not know.

The Battle of Mont St Jean / the Battle of le Belle Alliance

s1ujrc

Waterloo was the name of a nearby town as was customary for the British to name their battles after such areas. The Prussians on the other hand named the Battle ‘the battle of Le Belle Alliance‘ (the Inn at the center of Napoleons line) and the French called it the Battle of Mont St Jean.

A German Victory

keep-calm-and-learn-german

It is very easy to get wrapped up in our own legend and put the Victory at Waterloo down to British stubborn resolve and hardened vigour, but what is not overly recognised is that, 45% of Wellington’s Army spoke German, of one form or another, and if you take into account the Prussian army, arriving like the cavalry at the last moment in a John Wayne film, you are looking at a proportion a whopping 79% German contingent.

Granted Wellingtons army did stand the brunt of the attack for over half of the engagement and it is very much the case that had they not stood then Napoleon would have easily turned his forces on the already battle warn Prussians BUT there is little doubt that Waterloo is very much, if not more in part, a German Victory.

Things going Ill for Napoleon

Napoleon was reportedly of ill health during the battle (hemorrhoids being a constant pain in the ass… ) and this said to be one of the main contributions to why he lost.Despite this definitely being a factor on the day (a long with a million other things), Napoleons health did not detract from his great generalship.

An example given for this was when Ney got a bit over zealous with the Cavalry and threw them at what he thought was a retreating British army, only to realise they were on the other side of a hill and nicely waiting in square,.The attacks were repulsed and Napoleons cavalry was a spent force for the rest of the battle.

There is no way, had Napoleon been healthy that he would have let this happen, right?

What some people  don’t know is that, as the battle progressed, Black uniforms started appearing on the flank, the Prussians were arriving and would turn what was looking like a possible French victory in to very much a French defeat…They needed to be pinned down, and or, repulsed while they still had an advantage in numbers against the British and the best man for the job was Napoleon himself. What harm could it do to leave the center of your army and your cavalry with your Bravest Marshal…. ooops

In the end a Flank attack was a more vital situation for the Emperor to deal with and poor health had nothing to do with his appointment of Ney.

Unfortunately Even the Emperor needed to delegate and even your greatest generals fail ***face palm***

“Nothing except a battle lost can be half as melancholy as a battle won.”

Wellington is said to have quoted the above after the battle, having seen the carnage in front of him.

In total the battle cost both sides 47,000 dead and 24, 000 wounded. Even though there have been larger and more costly battles, the casualties per square mile make Waterloo one of the most compact and bloodiest battles of all time, with 2291 casualties per square mile compared to 234 for the British over the entire Battle of the Somme.

Can you fathom those sort of casualties today?

And the award for Greatest General goes to….

napwellu_3345523b

Nap… oh wait

Napoleon is thought of, in most part, rightfully as one of the greatest generals of all time but when it came to careers both He and Wellington stacked up as pretty much equally.

Napoleon fought more battles of course 62  to Wellignton’s 46 but the win to Loss ratio* is very similar, with A career win to loss of 87% for both Generals and a Napoleonic Era Record of 83%.

Unfortunately for Wellington, Napoleon, despite losing the only battle they fought against each other (you are only as good as your last game and all that) Napoleon won out on history and the cult de Napoleon transcended his defeats giving him a heroic Aura that is still revered today by many people.

I liken it to napoleon being the rock star of the 19th century.. burned bright and then went into his flat out on a toilet bowl phase, dying before he could do any damage. Wellington on the other hand went on to become Prime Minister and well, we know what happens to them….

In short Equal in strategic, operational and tactical genius

But a win for Wellington on the “I’m better than you front” and a Win to Napoleon for longest legacy.

*Indecisive battles have been included as wins on both sides due to he nature of the proverbial beast, both sides will have claimed victory even if it was a stalemate.

E3 2015: NEW NIER FOR PS4!

Square Enix’s sleeper hit 2010 ACTION RPG NIER is getting a follow-up! It will be co-developed by Platinum Games

Announced at Square Enix’s E3 2015 press conference, this new NIER iteration is being directed by Taro Yoko, who took charge of the inceptive NIER  as well as Drakengard(

This upcoming NIER game was only announced for the PS4, implyng that it could be an exclusive. Fingers crossed, it will arrive to other platforms in future.

The game is a joint effort by Platinum’s Atsushi Inaba and Square’s Yosuke Saito. The former confirmed that the new NIER won’t be confined as an action game, similar to how Platinum Games molded stealth-based Metal Gear into a hack-and-slash affair in Revengeance.

I hope it will not deviate from its RPG roots too much while adding novelty to the PS4’s library of games.

E3 2015: Sony Closes The Lid On Major Vita Games

0
The beginning of the end?
The beginning of the end?

Amidst the glamorous news of new games, there’s a piece of bad news for Vita fans – Sony has pulled the plug in developing any future blockbusters for the hand-held gadget. Speaking with IGN, Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida said that the electronics giant will not be making any more AAA first-party games. Say goodbye to any future Uncharted: Golden Abyss or Tearaway, then. (grab some tissues)

However, all is not doom and gloom. The platform holder is appetent to stress that there is still a future for the underappreciated platform – predominantly in the indie realm. “As you know and as I know, there are great games that come out digitally on the Vita that are typically cross-platform with the PS4,” he said. “There’s no lack of great games that you can play on the Vita and the PS4. You can play at home on the PS4 and continue on with cloud save on the Vita.”

I wonder, though. If there are so many great games on the horizon (multi-platform or not), why was the Vita restricted to a sputtering trailer during yesterday’s press conference? “We have so much amazing AAA content from third-parties, we have to put lots of those smaller games, including our own, into the trailer of everything,” Yoshida explained. “And so Vita games are the same. That’s how things are.”

I feel it’s an exiguous excuse, but Yoshida’s not off the mark here. You see, these co-marketing deals that Sony keeps signing are lucrative business, and the likes of Ubisoft and Activision are not going to be elated should their next high-profile game gets thudded in favour of say, Persona 4 Dancing All Night.

Alas, the quality of the elucidation will not ease the fears of disgruntled Vita fans. While the death knell hasn’t sound yet, we may have to accept that the system has been relegated to a portable indie machine at this point.

Well, It could be a blessing in disguise as the Vita is tailor-made for indie developers to weave their magic on,

DC Comics reminds everyone it’s all about the money.

0

Anyone picking up DC’s comics this month will have noticed something new that hasn’t featured in their comics before, I’m not referring to a new character or a new creative team but rather intrusive ads.

As anyone who actually picks up monthly comics will know ads in comics are nothing new, every issue from most publishers but especially Marvel and DC features several pages of ads. Generally these ads for the Big Two are for whatever licensed merchandise they are promoting at the moment (as everyone knows this market is way more lucrative than comics are) TV shows based on their properties and various other things.

Ads are one of the easiest ways for a company to gain revenue, one company pays another company for the opportunity to pimp their wares to a given audience, it doesn’t really matter what the medium is the fundamental concept is the same. The big difference this time is some of these ads aren’t the full page ads that readers will be familiar with but rather half page ads which interrupt the narrative flow of the story and impact on the art.

2015-06-14_1242

A while back there were rumours that DC might be doing this and this month DC readers found out that is actually happening, then there was speculation it would only be for a month, so why is it a big deal? This is a big deal because it has a major impact on an artists and writers creative process with the choice of panel composition and layout essentially taken away from the artist as they have to work around the space given up for for the ads.

Simply put it shows more than anything that DC cares about money first and sequential art (the medium responsible for their existence) second, something which has been becoming more and more obvious in recent years with the number of comics being cancelled for not hitting the right numbers. DC’s Dan Didio hammered this home by saying “We’ve always been the best with ads in our books, and now we have companies interested in buying ads in books. So I think that’s a good thing.” That might be great from a business perspective but it’s pretty awful from creator perspective.

As an indication of just how galling this is from a creators perspective, you know the people responsible for the audience DC is selling to remember, Greg Capullo (artist on Batman) didn’t hold back when explaining his feelings on the subject being quite upfront about how infuriating this was from a creators perspective.

2015-06-14_1252

Dig a little deeper though and you can see how this could potentially cripple any comic that doesn’t have a massive readership, people are going to pick up Batman every month regardless of whether it has half page ads that say “I did your mom last night and she loved it” (Note Batman doesn’t actually have ads that say that but you get my point) but it all comes down to a readers resilience and how much they’re willing to put up with something intruding on their reading experience.

There’s already plenty of people out there that just trade wait, it’s a pretty big problem for publishers as without anyone picking up the monthly comics there won’t be a trade. This is especially true for smaller publishers. This is just something to further convince people to trade wait, if a trade is going to be more affordable, have bonus content, look better on your shelf and be free of the intrusive ads that the monthly comics have then it’s pretty understandable why people don’t want to pick them up.

Whilst other publishers might be making steps to add value to their monthly comics with extra content not available in trades, like the essays found in Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips sublime noir piece “The Fade Out” for Image, DC seems to be doing the exact opposite. Then again is this move hinging on the idea that comics fans in general like to make a fuss about things but very rarely act upon them, is the publisher calling their bluff knowing people will get a bit angry on Twitter but just pick up their comics anyway? Whilst people might be wanting to support a specific creative team they’re doing it because they get something from what they produce be it entertaining escapism or something else. How much are you willing to put up with something encroaching on that in the clumsiest way possible?

Shenmue returns as Yu Suzuki brings long awaited sequel to Kickstarter

0

Fans of Sega’s ground breaking early open world RPG game Shenmue from Yu Suzuki have been waiting over a decade for any news of a third game after the release of Shenmue II in 2001. Now they’ve finally got it as Shenmue III has just appeared on Kickstarter with Suzuki finallly answering the question he’s been getting for years. The initial target of $2,000,000 was smashed in just over 9 hours with the total at the time of writing sitting at $2,341,899 and rising steadily with 31 days left and over 29,000 backers. The campaign has proven so popular that Kickstarter were struggling to cope with the traffic.

Doom 4 – Brutal Trailer & Old Comic

0

Bethesda have pretty much stole the show this year at E3 (like we expected any less). Fallout 4 has blown our mind, hearts and numerous pants but DOOM is looking like a whole new type of fucked up badassery. The “Marine” is now a power armored beast and our old friend the chainsaw is making an obvious appearance. This is totally going to blow a couple of fish out of the water with its new executions and gore and… you know what, just watch the conveniently placed trailer below!

If you’re a comic book lover by the way, make sure to check out the 10 year anniversary comic linked below. It may be a little old but it’s pure gold (tee hee, that rhymed). You’ll thank me later.

Mass Effect Andromeda Trailer Released

0

E3 continues to ride the hype train into the distance with a ton of huge reveals. Among them is this, the proper confirmation of the new Mass Effect game, sub-titled Andromeda. The game is set in another galaxy and a fair while after the adventures of Shepard from the original trilogy. Several core elements of the game are still intact (an omni-tool, a Mako, a galaxy map, an iconic Mass Effect pistol and N7 armour all appear in the trailer) despite the time and location change, so no need to fear a complete overhaul.

BioWare have stated that: “this game is very much a new adventure, taking place far away from and long after the events of the original trilogy. You will play a human, male or female, though that’s actually not the character you saw in the trailer (more on that later)..You’ll be exploring an all-new galaxy, Andromeda, and piloting the new and improved Mako you saw. And through it all, you will have a new team of adventurers to work with, learn from, fight alongside of, and fall in love with.”

Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think of the latest outing in the comments:
