The Game Awards 2015: Most notable

With ‘The Game Awards 2015’ came a flurry of new trailers and sneak peeks. First up, we had a new trailer for ‘Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End‘; now this footage has actually brought up a controversial topic. The character we are introduced to, Nadine Ross, is black…but her voice actress, Laura Bailey, is white. Now, the creative director did shed some light about this decision – that he casted the role before finalising the design first, and made the decision to keep the voice actress after the completion of the character despite being told that it could “invite controversy”.

Personally, I am of the opinion that if the director liked her voice so much he could have created a new character or saved her for a different, possibly even female-led game. I just think that it is the wrong decision, and there are other voice actresses out there who are of the same ethnicity. Her character will probably still be interesting, but I think this is a misstep for them to make.

Moving on, we now have a double dose of everyone’s favourite episodic game developer, Telltale Games. In a stunning announcement – even when we know that a Marvel Telltale game is in the works – it has been revealed that they are working on a Batman game, which will…be…awesome! Ever since the critical success of ‘The Walking Dead’ Season 1, the company has gone from strength to strength, bringing out some amazing works from ‘Fables’, ‘Borderlands’, and ‘Game of Thrones’. I can’t wait to see what they do with Gotham…but what could they do? An adaptation of ‘Year One’, showing the Dark Knight during his early days of crime fighting? An original tale, with a more modern and experienced detective (featuring cameos from a few other bats and birds)? And who will be the main villain? Will we go traditional, and have Joker…or someone new pulling the strings, who we’ve seen before but wouldn’t expect…

Also, to those of you still trying to scratch that itch left behind by ‘The Walking Dead’, we have a trailer for the mini-series game coming our way featuring the one and only Michonne!

Another teaser for the new Far Cry Primal coming our way. I’m very interested in the characters, as the whole setting looks amazing – is the dialogue an original language, or is (possibly derived) from another language? I’m sure most of you are thinking…what is he talking about, just look at this game, I GET TO TRAIN A SABER-TOOTHED CAT! SIC ‘EM, MR TIGGUMS! WE RIDE TO GLORY! I HAVE THE POWER!

…ahem, well let’s just say that on the technical side, the game looks pretty incredible. Should be interesting to see where exactly the narrative goes…

Footage was finally shown for the upcoming remake of Final Fantasy 7 for the Playstation 4. It seems that the remake with forgo the traditional turn-based system for a more dynamic combat flow similar to the stuff we have seen in the demos for Final Fantasy 15. Which is a good thing – with the updated system comes new opportunities to test the limits of the hardware. We catch a glimpse of this combat system in action, with Cloud barrelling into an enemy SOLDIER, and Barret firing off his machine-gun-hand. So, just like FFXV, you’ll be able to swap between characters to pull off some neat little moves. The graphics look amazing, and I can only imagine how the rest of the cast looks.

Interestingly, it has been reported that the remake will be told “across a multi-part series, with each entry providing its own unique experience”. Wait, so…will this be episodic? Seems like an interesting concept…I mean, I would have preferred a single game, considering we have the technology…and I don’t see the point really. One of the pull of episodic games nowadays is that your characters and their actions are yours, and each episode ends on a cliffhanger. Here, we already know the story BECAUSE IT’S A REMAKE.There are no plot twists, or cliffhangers, that we don’t know about. I guess we can only wait for more information to come.

Finally, Double Fine announced that they would be pulling a ‘ShenMue 3’ to crowdfund the creation of Psychonauts 2. I know of the game, but never had the fortune to find/play it, so hopefully this will provide me with enough incentive to get around to actually doing that.

And that about wraps it up…aside from a new ‘Shaq Fu’ game, and even more Konami/Kojima controversy, the final notable event was the touching tribute to Satoru Iwata, which was closed by a speech from Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime.

Ghostbusters Board Game

It’s the 80’s. The Flock of Seagulls hairdo is in vogue, the NES is making a big splash in the home gaming world and one of the biggest movies of all time, the Ghostbusters, was released. Fast forward to 2015: hundreds of cartoons, comics and toys later and Ghostbusters is still going strong, and to top it all off, Cryptozoic Entertainment have taken us to the next level with a miniatures board game based on the famous four. I was lucky enough to get ahold of a copy, and wanted to share my thoughts with all you ‘Buster-fans out there.

The first thing I noticed is this box is HEAVY! Composed of thick card, I instantly got the feeling of a well produced game. The components within followed this theme, with some incredibly well detailed miniatures (including Slimer, Ecto-1 and a Stay-Pift Marshmallow man you could knock a grown person out with…), thick modular boards, solid cardboard tokens and chunky dice. The artwork on the box, rulebook and player boards just ‘pop’ despite the heavy, deep blacks used in most of the backgrounds. Everything about this game shows a considerable investment in manufacture and graphic design.

Whole lotta stuff in that box!
Whole lotta stuff in that box!

So it’s pretty, but is it playable. First, a quick overview of the rules. In the majority of games, a secenario is chosen which shows players how to set up a board using the assorted modular board sections, then place Gates and Ghosts before setting up the Ecto-1 (the starting point of each mission for the Ghostbusters). Every game features all four of the classic characters (Ray, Egon, Peter and Winston), so if you have less than four players someone will have to take on another character to play.

During their turn, players can make two Actions, including:
– Move up to two squares
– Drive the Ecto-1 (basically move 6 squares)
– Deposit captured Ghosts into Ecto-1
– Combat some of the ghoulies running around the board
– Remove slime from another ghost

Movement is pretty clear, so I’ll move on to the combat. Each ghost has an info card that dictates what the player needs to hit them on a d6 and how often they need to be struck. Each hit places a ‘stream’ token on that ghost; if it gets hit with enough streams, it’s trapped and the model goes on that ghostbuster’s stat card.

Please tell me someone else drove this around the board going WAAAHH WAAAHH WAAAHH!
Please tell me someone else drove this around the board going WAAAHH WAAAHH WAAAHH!

However, many of the ghosts have special abilities that trigger either when it’s hit, missed or trapped. These mostly involve some kind of random movement (if a ghost moves over a ghostbuster model the buster gets slimed!) or just splurges of slime that hit the players directly (more on the effect of slime later).

As with many miniatures games, the GB board game has a line of sight mechanic based on coloured lines printed directly on the board. Yellow lines block LoS, orange lines only block movement whilst red blocks both. The proton pack streams also only have a range of three squares, and if you ever lose LoS to a ghost you’ve got streams on, all those streams are lost and the ghost ‘escapes’. The blend of the LoS, range and ghost movement mechanics create a degree of tactical thinking as players weigh up the pros and cons of shooting the spooks or moving to a better/safer vantage point. I also love the thematic idea of a ghost just panicking after being hit by a proton stream and just flying through a wall, breaking the lock and making good it’s escape.

Once a ghost is captured, those GBs who helped trap it receive experience points which is tracked on the character boards in a similar way to another miniatures board game called Zombicide. Get enough XP and your buster levels up, gaining new abilities that help grab more XP or assist gameplay wise. This system adds a wonderful feeling of progression, especially if you play several games in a row in a campaign, as you feel your personal favourite get more bad ass as you play. That said, not all the ghostbusters have been created equal, with a couple of them (Ray and Egon) being more useful from the beginning and levelling faster than the other two. I’m a big fan of asymmetrical starting characters in games, but I definitely felt at a disadvantage playing either Peter or Winston. This can throw off the game balance a tad and make the game seem less fun to some players as they watch their partners just sail through the levelling system.

So apart from capturing the ghosts, what else can you do? Well one of the actions is to deposit all your ghosts into Ecto-1, sending them to a tile called the Spirit world. This is important, as at the end of each turn players will roll the fate die. Each face of the fate die matches one of the aforementioned ‘gate’ tokens set up on the board (side note: each gate symbol is based on the psychic test cards Peter uses in the film, adding that little extra thematic congruity!). Depending on the scenario, new ghosts may spawn which are taken from that Spirit world tile. If at any point this is empty and a ghost tries to spawn, the game ends immediately and the ghostbusters lose. This effectively sets up a timer in game that the players need to add back to via their deposits into Ecto-1. Balancing shooting ghosts, closing those pesky gates and keeping the Spirit world topped up lends itself beautifully to the cooperative experience of this game as everyone tries to do their part.

The whole gang is here, and they have a lot to do...
The whole gang is here, and they have a lot to do…

Remember the slime? Everytime a ghost hits you with slime or moves over your miniature, you collect a slime token. Each of these reduces the number of actions a buster can take in a turn, so repeated slimings can leave you unable to move or attack until either you or another players pull some of that slime off.

Overall, the gameplay is pretty straightforward. Once you know your actions, you’ll be ploughing through turns rapidly as it comes down to a ‘move and/or shoot if I can, remove slime if I can’t’ rhythm. It’s a ruleset that’s been designed with the casual gamer and buster fan in mind, people who may love the franchise but don’t want a super complex miniatures game. For more hardcore gamers, the GB board game has just enough variety (via the different scenario set ups and rules) to engage but I wouldn’t predict it’ll be played more than once through the base game scenarios. Despite the variety, each mission tends to boil down to ‘shoot ghosts then shoot gates to close them’. It’s fun, and the random dice element adds that undercurrent of the unknown that always makes games more exciting, but the base game may not have enough meat to keep those used to more complex rulesets engaged.

Thematically I think the game is wonderfully realised. The idea of proton streams needing to be ‘kept on’ a ghost is just brilliant, and the way the busters get around the board in Ecto-1 capturing ghosts and sending them back to the Spirit world is a,cracking nod to the IP by this board game. This immersiveness is helped considerably by the quality of the miniatures, with the ghosts cast in a semi-translucent plastic that gives that extra feel of the ethereal about them. The game just looks incredible on the table.

So Ghostbusters the board game is a relatively simple and quick miniatures game that looks amazing and plays smoothly; just don’t expect a huge amount of depth in the ruleset. The game costs around £69.99, and can be found at you local store here at www.findyourgamestore.co.uk.

Munchkin gets the Marvel treatment

The evergreen and incredibly popular gateway game Munchkin has had several interations, including licensing for Tim Burton’s Nightmare before Christmas and Adventure Time. However, if these don’t appeal to you, USAoploy has announced a coalition between Steve Jackson Games and Marvel to bring you Munchkin Marvel edition!

Munchkin but with more spandex and thunder hammers

The release date is slated for April 2016, so not long to wait. I’m looking forward to finding out if this will just be a simple reskin or if the Marvel theme is given better integration with some cool new mechanics. Plus Hulk…please?

New trailer for Batman vs Superman Dawn of Justice is a Hot Mess

0

I was never really that interested in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice and then the first trailer appeared. Despite thinking this was going to be nothing other than a Michael Bay style car crash that would paradoxically still be making millions upon millions at the box office I was actually pretty impressed. Cautiously optimistic even. So much so I even wrote a an article about it.

The dark tone so jarring in the woefully bad Man of Steel works with Batman in the mix and the way it was worked into the established events of Man of Steel actually made sense and actually made for a strong reason as to why DC’s best known characters would be at odds with each other. More than that though it teased some interesting narrative points like Superman being demonised for being an alien but also deified by others as well a variety of locations and scenarios. Ben Affleck seemed to be a good fit for Batman (despite whatever The Internet at large seemed to think) and introducing Gal Godot as Wonder Woman would be a big deal given it will be the first appearance of DC’s most iconic female superhero in film.

I went from having no real interest in Dawn of Justice to actually maybe looking forward to it.

Then the latest trailer happened and it completely torpedoed any faith I had in this being anything other than a fragmented, tonally dissonant mess of a film much like Man of Steel.

2015-12-04_2015

This new trailer features far more of Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor and really that’s where things nosedive into oblivion. Whilst Eisenberg is a great actor (seriously checkout The Social Network) as seen here his Lex is a painfully unfunny clown utterly grating with the tone projected by Affleck’s Batman and Cavill’s Superman to the point it seems like he thinks he’s in another film entirely, or under the impression he is playing The Joker I’m not sure which.

Casting the thirty something Eisenberg as Lex Luthor turned a few heads initially given the characters history of being portrayed by more established veteran actors Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey in previous films, although Michael Rosenbaum did play a younger Lex in the proto Superman show Smallville.

One of the most telling aspects of the new trailer though is despite Ben Affleck’s Batman, Henry Cavill’s Superman and Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor all having dialogue featured in both trailers released so far we’ve yet to hear a single syllable from Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. This is essentially reducing her to eyecandy which seems to be going unnoticed due to the fact that Wonder Woman is there at all. Yeah Wonder Woman is in your film great but at the moment she is being played like a footnote in the trailers which isn’t exactly a great way to treat a character arguably just as iconic as Batman or Superman.

Aside from that though this trailer reveals that Doomsday will be the reason that Batman and Superman team up with Wonder Woman (and others) , because spoiler the whole point of Dawn of Justice is to set up the Justice League in one film. Doomsday is revealed to actually be Michael Shannon’s General Zod recreated as a poorly executed digital character. Much like Man of Steel Dawn of Justice seems to be crippled by subpar CG FX.

Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice is looking a bit like a car crash at best and a squandered opportunity at worst.

Check out the trailer below.

Darkest Dungeon 2: Die Darker

0

You’ll be forgiven if Darkest Dungeon has passed you by – I mean, it was a successful Kickstarter, it’s been on Steam Early Access for ages, and it’s regularly on sale. But if its somehow passed you by, then now’s the right time to get hyped about Darkest Dungeon. With a release date just around the corner, January 19th, you won’t have too long to wait before delving deep into those demented dungeons.

If you want to know more about Darkest Dungeon, either because this is your first time hearing about it, or you missed it the first time around, here’s Daniel Delargy’s first review of the game. However, if you’re a seasoned adventurer and just want to know what’s new in the Dungeon since Daniel’s review, read on.

Darkest Arms
Shield-bashing the way to victory, since Lovecraft was a lad.

The Corpse in the Corridor

Enemies you slay are now reduced to a pile of meat and bone upon their demise, save for smaller enemies or those finished off by critical hits, Blight or Bleed conditions. This keeps the enemy line held together for longer, toning down the effectiveness of a playstyle that simply let you load up your front ranks with heavy-hitters and clear the field from first to last row. While you can still do that, it’s no longer a standout runner for the most powerful play, and requires a bit more strategy. If you want the song and verse on how thisrumbled the community, follow the link…

Delvers from the Deeps

The Cove is now open for business, bringing with it a roster of sea-creatures who’re resistant to Bleed effects the same way the pigs are tough to Blight – but don’t confuse this for a reskin. The fishheads have spellcasters that can heal, stress and buff – and the Boss fights here will destroy the unprepared.

Darkest Abomination
“Get hyped, scrub.”

Heroes & Heretics

Four new character classes have been added over the last few major patches, along with new bosses and tweaks to the general monster balance – if you haven’t played in months, expect to be tripped up again by surprise conditions and enemy teamwork. While you’re at it, expect to make room in your roster for the Arbalest, Abomination, Man-At-Arms and Hound Master too.

If you just can’t get enough Darkest Dungeon, head over to the website, where they’re running a series of short one-page comics about their characters, all in that wonderful style of theirs.

Good luck to you, Dungeoneers. Keep your light high and your Leper equipped with accuracy-boosting gear…

American McGee’s Sister Missing, Possibly Related to Gamergate Threats

0

American McGee, CEO of Spicy Horse games and well known for the American McGee’s Alice game series, is asking for help locating his sister, Mercy Covington, who has been missing since November 10th, 2015. While this would be terrifying enough for anyone whose family member went missing, it is especially alarming because Mercy was specifically mentioned in a threat made against American during Gamergate.

On April 30th, American was threatened on Facebook via several messages regarding Gamergate, which not only stated the city where Mercy lived, but mentioned her by name. Whether or not this person was involved in Mercy’s disappearance is as yet unknown, but the police do have this information.

Unfortunately, the police in Dallas, Texas don’t seem to be doing much to investigate, and the family is getting desperate for help. Please keep your eyes open and pass along her photos and information.

Mercy1

Mercy Covington was last seen around 8PM on November 9th when she was dropped off at her home (in the Casa Linda area of East Dallas) after work. She is 5’4, about 110 lbs., has brown hair and green eyes.

If you have any information, please contact the Dallas Police Department, (214) 200-5693, or message American McGee directly via Facebook.

From American’s Facebook page:

“Please Help – Share and Re-Post
My sister, Mercy Covington, has been missing since November 10th, 2015. She was last seen being dropped off at home after work on November 9th at around 8PM. Her home is in East Dallas (Casa Linda area), and her usual hangouts are in Downtown Dallas, East Dallas, and Oak Cliff. Mercy is 41-year old mother of three.
We have very little information to go on at this point, but do suspect foul play. One disturbing bit of evidence is an anti-Gamergate death threat made against me by an individual living in Dallas who mentions Mercy by name. While it’s not unusual for me to receive death threats, it’s never been the case that one contains the names and location of family members. We are uncertain what connection this person may have to Mercy, but the messages have been given to police. I have also added them to this post (be warned they contain graphic content).
Thus far the police have done little to investigate Mercy’s disappearance and our family is quite desperate. A Facebook page containing additional information can be found here:
https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100010846652032
If you’ve seen Mercy or have any information regarding her whereabouts, please message me or contact the Dallas Police Department. Additional points of contact are provided on the Facebook page linked above.”

While I’m choosing not to show the graphic pictures here, I am including photos of Mercy from the page American links us to, Findmercy Covington on Facebook. Please share, and let’s do all we can to bring Mercy home.

FLASH GORDON: 35th Anniversary Event

DSC_0027

The past weekend I’ve had the privilege of being in the company of some of my childhood heroes.

Saturday November 28th at BAFTA headquarters played host to the cast and crew of FLASH GORDON to celebrate its 35th anniversary of this cult classic. A gathering that even artist Alex Ross donated his amazing talents to with a 3ft poster that was given to everyone who attended.

MelodyAnderson_SamJones

The black tie event was organized by creator / show producer Lisa Downs; event company, Sledge; and sponsors Rosewood London, Stress Free Print, and Addison Lee and brought together: Sam J. Jones (Flash Gordon), Melody Anderson (Dale Arden), Peter Wyngarde (Klytus), Brian Blessed (Prince Vultan), Trevor Butterfield (Hawkman); director, Mike Hodges; composer, Howard Blake; SFX Supervisor, George Gibbs;  SFX assistant, Dave Watson and 1st AD, Brian Cook for drinks, mingling with fans and what seems to be a well-earned catch up and walk down memory lane.

Also in attendance were other UK celebrities such as Matt Berry, Nicky Clarke and Marcus Brigstocke.

ShowProducerLisaDowns_ExecProdAshleyPugh

The night started with the warmest of welcomes by the hosts of the evening, where upon I was presented with my Press badge, VIP lanyard, a Flash Gordon Catalogue and offered complimentary drinks and finger foods while mingling with the other guests and taking in the sights of some amazing Props from the feature film that were on display. The hosts of the evening were very helpful in answering any, and all, questions and were very apologetic if things were running late.

23299678432_48bf91cebd_z

Soon after the stars made their entrances and were gently approached by fans with autograph and selfie requests; which Sam and Melody were only too happy to provide. Others were taken to the green room where they caught up with each other and chatted while press were given their time slots for interviews. I was extremely lucky to be granted an audience with Sam, Melody and Brian all at once. When I was told that I nearly fainted and squealed with girlish glee, this opportunity was mine and I wasn’t going to waste any time I had with them. 22780543003_b7bf8391f5_b23040692069_657188c0de_z

Talking with my heroes, I’ve never had so much fun, it wasn’t an interview as such, more like just a warm chat with friends I haven’t seen in years; that’s how comfortable I was made to feel. Brian Blessed was like a grenade when I came to having a chat; pull the pin and watch him Explode!

He was brilliant and his enthusiasm towards ‘Flash Gordon’ after 35 years was still an incredibly excited one; I was only given 10 minutes with them but Brian kept it going for nearly 20 and it got to  a point that one of the organizers had to stop us as others were waiting.

I made my apologies, to which Brian said “we were just getting going too”, the stars signed my catalogue (which we will be giving away to a lucky Geek Prider soon). I shook everybody’s hand, had a cheeky group photo, said my farewells and joined the rest of the group inside the theatre where the Classic Cult Rock Opera was being shown on the big screen.

A brilliant Q and A followed after the screening where Brian, once again, stole the show with his incredible command over the stage and audience left us doubled over in laughter.

23408149995_96d0d8de22_z

I can’t thank Lisa Downs and her team enough for a brilliant time and I’m still on a huge high from the evening. FLASH GORDON is timeless, it was great to feel like a kid again and it brought back some great memories of my grandfather reading me ‘Flash Gordon’ and seeing the film for the first time with him.

Thank you all for making this Geek and many others like me’s night….Gordon was definitely ALIVE! in well in the hearts and minds of all who attended this amazing night.

The Disturbing Nature of Mr Meeseeks and Why I Find it Hard to Watch

0

zTEpcLF

Let me start by declaring SPOILER WARNING for Rick and Morty Season 1: Episode 5 ‘Meeseeks and Destroy’.

Okay no we have that out of the way let’s get down to business. Rick and Morty is an excellent animated show for us adults following the misadventures of an genius alcoholic scientist, Rick and his easily manipulated and impressionable grandson Morty. Splitting the stories between their outlandish adventures through the cosmos and alternative dimensions, and their family life living with Morty’s parents and sister, Rick and Morty has quickly gathered a huge fan-base and critical acclaim and rightly so. It is brilliant.

Packed full of adult humour, clever story-lines and ambitious science fiction you will enjoy the crazy, somewhat shocking subject matter and hilarious adventures. There are emotionally meaningful moments and sad times and then there is episode 5.

Meeseeks_and_Destroy_4

In ‘Meeseeks and Destroy’ Rick gives a Meeseeks Box to his son in law Jerry. This cube spawns helpful blue creatures called Mr Meeseeks, their sole purpose to complete a task and blink out of existence – they are happy to die.  Beginning each sentence with cheerful  “I’m Mr. Meeseeks! Look at me!” these guys are friendly and willing to help those who summoned them – unless of course they can’t complete the task assigned. When Jerry asks his to knock two strokes off his golf game so begins the Mr Meeseeks spiral into murderous insanity, with Mr Meeseeks summoning more of his kind to help him but none being able to complete the task.

I find this episode one of the most disturbing things I have watched. I’ve seen it twice and both times it ended I felt despair and my soul ached. But I’m a grown up, I know it’s a cartoon, so what is it about these creatures that I find so very disturbing?

Mr Meeseeks’ whole purpose focusses on completing a task and dying. That is their only goal in their short life and, as we find out, to be alive is pain. To end this creatures suffering, the only way is for them to find peace, is to achieve the goal they were created for, so what happens when this takes far longer than they’re used to? Well, insanity, violence and despair that’s what. They cannot be killed with physical violence, they are for all intents and purposes immortal.

tumblr_n3we5a8ZBf1tsuuvno4_250

As a quite empathetic person I am often moved by other peoples great joys or suffering. I am one of those suckers that cries at the John Lewis advert even though I think it’s stupid.  I feel, I care and I want to be able to take away the pain people experience. So as Meeseeks begins to become more apprehensive at Jerry’s failure to improve, I felt my own anxiety rising. Mr Meeseeks calls on more of his own kind who are unable to help him achieve his ultimate goal. Added to that the desperation in their voice as they repeat  “I’m Mr. Meeseeks! Look at me!” I began to feel an intense need to end their torturous suffering. To make matters worse,  as they spiral into madness, they turn on each other, violence ensues which is pointless as they can’t be killed. The end to their suffering in the hands someone whose actions they cannot control and I don’t like that.

If you think about it, Meeseeks’ could be viewed as a mirror for our own anxieties about life. Ever been tasked with something you just couldn’t achieve? Just remember that frustration. Come across a barrier you just couldn’t overcome? There’s that feeling of inadequacy. Ever been let down by someone you thought would do right by you? Cue that need for violent revenge. Many of us don’t act on our impulses or become bogged down by our feelings. We learn to manage them, to protect ourselves. When you take away our ability to do this, strip away the coping mechanisms, what you are left with is a reflection the journey taken by the Meeseeks in this episode.

ArmyOfMeeseeks

Many of us set life goals we want to achieve before we die, some of us win, some of us are well adjusted enough to be able to change our goals depending on the shit life throws at us. But, there are people who, for whatever reason, are unable to achieve their ambitions, overcome failures or get up when life knocks them down.  Sadly, some fall into a dark place of self-destruction with a belief there is no way out, until existence is pain. At times we have all felt helpless to change the paths of our lives, and for me the Mr Meeseeks story represents how desperate and powerless we can allow ourselves become. For me, they are an echo of one of my greatest fears.

I don’t want you to leave this article down and depressed, because there is plenty of Rick and Morty that is just about cheap laughs and perverted humour so on a lighter a note…

mr1joFC

Oh wait…that’s also quite depressing. Man, this show is just so well written. Here have this instead.

MCM Birmingham Comic Con: What Cons Should Be

0

BCC 2015-29

Birmingham Comic Con is the highlight of the convention calendar in the Midlands. Held in the spacious Birmingham NEC, the con has more than enough space to accommodate the hundreds of trader stands and signing tables without feeling cramped or claustrophobic.

One of the highlights of Birmingham Comic Con is the atmosphere of shared geekery. For once, the people who do not cospay or dress for the occasion are the weirdos. That is not to say that those who dressed normally felt left out, but they did not stand out from the rest of the motley crowd.

BCC 2015-12

Liv Tyler and Lee Majors were the major draws for the weekend, and the cost of their signatures reflected this. However, they were joined by dozens of actors and actresses from films and tv-shows, past and present, such as Dina Meyer (Dizz from Starship Troopers) and Merrin Dungey (Ursula from Once Upon A Time). Whilst some were beginning to look bored by Sunday afternoon, Virginia Hey (Zhaan from Farscape) was enjoying the convention just as much as the fans, as well as taking the time to always speak with people.

It was gratifying to see that there were an abundance of creators being showcased, in the form of numerous writers and artists, amongst the traders. There was also a packed Comics Village, which could well have done with being a Comics Town, as it was sold out well in advance.

I cannot write about a convention with commenting upon the cosplayers. I was surprised to spot only one Catwoman and one Black Cat. However, there were many Harley Quinns (including a great cross-play), Batmans (Batmen?) and Stormtroopers. Special mention must go to the little girl dressed as winged centaur.

BCC 2015-36

Even the traders get in on the action, with A.S. Chambers smartly dressed in his steampunk finest and the Geeky Comics host who dressed as Esmee from their comic of the same name.

There was plentiful food on offer from the NEC outlets around the edge of the hall and in the auditorium outside, as well as the separate food hall opposite the main area, which seemed somewhat over-sized for the ten or so bars and food stands that were there. The prices seemed equally inflated, with a portion of chips costing £3. The last time I saw prices like that was in London.

BCC 2015-9

As always, Birmingham Comic Con appeared to be a slick and well-organised affair. Everything seemed to happen when it was intended. It would be impossible to see everything at Birmingham Comic Con, as there is so much happening at the same time and it is often best to simply allow yourself to wander the con and see what happens rather than planning your schedule in advance (unless, of course, you have a set time for a signing).

The queues, as always, were huge to enter Birmingham Comic Con, but this time the organisers did not fill a separate hall with the tickets queues like last time. Whilst the increase in price for an early-birds ticket may seem strange, walking in when you were ready was a far less stressful experience than waiting in the queues.
